Gimme that sweet team lead at the yellows. Wonder who's the best Latvian on the team. Great choice.

@Jandal: That was a risk I was willing to take. Some 'club'-country clash coming up next season you say?
@knockout: I hope that turns out to be true
@Croatia: Thanks . You'll have to wait till the team presentation at the start of the next season to know the answer

Last year was already a big boost to my reputation in the peloton, having won the Giro and being nominated for the Velo D'Or for the first time. I was hoping for a repeat of my performances but I wasn't expecting the year I ended up having!
My started off with a win on the very first stage I rode in, the Team Time Trial at the Tirreno-Adriatico. That kind of set the tone for the most successful season of career. Eight stage wins, including two in TTTs and two in ITTs, the win in La Fleche Wallone and the culmination at the Vuelta, with two stage wins and the Maillot Rojo, makes this a very memorable season indeed. I'd do very well to have a repeat of these results in the future.
I finished on top of the Individual Standings in the World Tour rankings and in 3rd place in the Prestige Rankings. I was nominated for the Velo D'Or again and finished 2nd behind Simon Yates.
| World Tour Rankings | CQ Rankings | Me | 1st - 702 points | 3rd - 2973 points | Bonsucro | 4th - 1390 points | 3rd - 7882 points |

Another new year beckons. Time sure flies! This is my tenth year as a professional cyclist, and having moved to another new team, it's about time I start to look for some solidity in my surroundings. I've also moved out from Amsterdam and into new accommodations in Essen, the team's base. A new team means more new faces to get to know, and more dynamics to figure out. I would like to take this chance to introduce them.
The team is built around myself, Duteil and Bauhaus, with plenty of climbing support to help my ambitions. There are a couple of youngsters looking to make a name for themselves, and they will be ones to watch in the coming years for sure. First impressions: I think I already like this setup
Two changes from the last time I presented myself, the jersey colours have changed and the contract. Everything else is the same and it's up to me to utilize them best.

Wow New Jeff looks like a top talent - could be the next Old Jeff imo.
Seems like a good squad for you. Having Duteil around should be fun when you participate in the hills, and Jeff and Pastor seem like great lieutenants for you. Awesome setup!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Everyone hopes New Jeff can live up to his predecessors' achievements!
Yeah that was one of the reasons I chose to sign for the team. Well and truly set up to help in my GT quest. Duteil would be nice to ride with. Wonder if I can get a Barguil like rapport with him going ahead.

Chomping on the Energy Bar
The move to Evonik looks to be a perfect match for the moment. The team looks custom built to help me on the mountains and I couldn't ask for more. I'm now 28 and the quest to win the elusive Tour is unfinished. I still have a few seasons at the top, but that would be just four or five more attempts at winning the Tour while at my peak. Having won two Grand Tours and a Monument already, I'd go as far as saying that my reputation is safe, but the ultimate career goal is something I'd like to achieve before bowing out.
Coming to the current season, I've made a conscious decision to increase the number of race-days that I attend. An extended calendar sees an earlier start to the season as well as more preparation before the Vuelta. Below is the schedule for my season.
Race | Month | Type | Tour Down Under | January | Stage Race | Paris - Nice | March | Stage Race | Vuela al Pais Vasco | April | Stage Race | Amstel Gold Race | April | Classic | La Fleche Wallone | April | Classic | Liege - Bastogne - Liege | April | Monument | Criterium Dauphine | June | Stage Race | National Championship - Individual Time Trial | June | National Championship - Road Race | June | Tour de France | July | Grand Tour | Tour de Pologne | August | Stage Race | Vuelta a Espana | August | Grand Tour | Il Lombardia | October | Monument |

The new season starts with a new team a long way away from the well-known roads of Europe.
My first trip to Australia. A good chance to get to know my teammates without a lot of pressure to perform.
Stage 1 was a flat opener and one for the sprinters. We got off to the best possible start with Bauhaus winning the stage in Evonik colours.
Stage 2 was more of the same and even flatter. A three man break was cuaght with 8 km to go, with Bauhaus managing 8th this time in the bunch sprint.
Stage 3 was also rated as flat but it did end on a slight incline. Danny Van Poppel was our best finisher this time, in 7th. There was a pack split in the approach to the finish but no GC contenders were caught out.
Stage 4 saw more flat roads and more joy for the sprinters. Van Poppel got onto the podium with a 3rd place finish.
Stage 5
The decisive stage saw me as one of the favourites. Ania, a former teammate, was the top favourite. The eight man break was caught early, with 35 km still left. Ania and Sagan attacked on Willunga hill. I followed at a distanced and reeled in Sagan, but Ania stayed away. I was caught by O'Donnel and Alaphilippe before the second climb. Alaphilippe attacked with 8 km to go and caught up to Ania. With 3.5 km left, the two leaders had a 35" lead to my group also having O'Donnell and Sagan. Alaphilippe won the sprint up ahead while I had nothing left and had to settle for 5th on the stage and indeed 5th in the GC. Van Poppel finished 9th.
Stage 6 was the short flat finish to Adelaide. A six man break survived, by only a few meters to the sprinters at the finish. Bauhaus finished 9th. I moved up to 4th on count-back in the GC, having the same time to O'Donnell. Bauhaus and Van Poppel finished 8th and 11th in the GC respectively.

The gaps between posts are a bit longer than I would've hoped for. Hopefully I can speed up a bit from now on.

I had the whole of February off from racing after a good start to my Evonik days in Australia. In March, I tackle a race I last rode in four years ago.
I was still in Lotto - Soudal colours the last time I started this race. That time, I finished 7th in the final classification after a solid but unspectacular race/ I was definitely aiming higher this time.
Stage 1 was on flat roads leading to an early three man who got caught 6 km from the line. The bunch sprint decided the stage winner.
Stage 2 saw an early eight man break which was chased down. Eventually, the break let a two man break form and get away. They were caught 12 km out. Pelucchi was involved in a late crash for us. Another bunch sprint is how the stage ended.
Stage 3 was more of the same and even less eventful. The sprinters continued to enjoy themselves.
Stage 4 saw me listed as one of the favourites in the bumpy terrain. However, the sprinters' teams managed to keep everything together in the lead up to the finish and another bunch sprint ensued. My consistency in the finishes now put me 7th in the GC.
A strong eight man break formed on Stage 5. I took on some of the pace-making duties on the third climb and then again repeated the same on the last one. The latter was more about setting up an attack, which I did 2 km from the top. I had a 29" lead at the summit to the peloton with the break 41" ahead of me. I caught six of the original breakaway 6 km from the finish, and soon we were all caught by the pack 2 km later. Two riders from the breakaway survived and took the stage win.
Stage 6
The early 4 man break turned into 9 after the first climb. The pack split into three groups after the second climb, with me safely in the lead group. The second group soon caught up. We caught eight of the nine riders from the break 40 km from the line. The other had a minute's lead at this point. Two riders attacked for KOM points on the third climb. Nairo Quintana tried to use this as his launching pad for an attack but they were all brought back soon. The lone breakaway rider was caught too. I got away from the pack at the start of the fourth climb but was followed and caught by Quintana. Polanc too caught up to us. There was a six man chase group behind us. They dropped one rider but soon caught up to us. I attacked and won the KOM sprint. Dumoulin attacked next, with 9 km to go. I countered along with Polanc and Ania. Quintana and Alaphilippe were dropped. I left the others behind and eventually caught Dumoulin under the Flamme Rouge. I powered past and went on to win the stage, in what I myself would describe as one of my best chases. I moved up to the top of the GC, and up to 2nd in the KOM standings.
(Leaving a tired Dumoulin behind to claim the stage win!)
Stage 7 saw Lafay crashing early but no damage was done. The six man break became seven and then ten after the first climb. Three were caught with 40 km to go. My teammates were pacing the group on the climb. Dumoulin attacked with 14 km to go but got caught with km left. Sevem from the break survived. I finished 9th. I fell to 5th in the KOM standings but the GC lead lead was preserved.
Stage 8
The eight man break got a big lead in the early uphill sections. The pack split on the third climb with the peloton just having 48 riders by the time we reached the next climb. One rider from the break was back in the pack. I was among seven riders who broke away from the pack on the fourth climb. We caught four more riders from the break by the time we reach the summit of the last climb. Quintana crashed with 6 km to go and was thus dropped. I was in a group of 8, around two and a half minutes behind the break at the time. The break survived and I finished 7th on the stage with Lafay in 10th. I held on to the GC win! This was definitely a dream start for Evonik.

My season has got off to a dream start with a top 5 and a top 10 in the first two races. This will be a very important year for me, and I couldn't have wished for anything more so far.

You're giving Evonik some nice results already. Or is the jersey just that powerful?

Wow, what a ride to gain and defend the jersey, awesome GC win Love to see it back (and encouraging me to move my ass with my own story )

@knockout: I'd like to think it's a bit of both
@jandal: Thanks
Well I'll try to keep the pace up but other things keep coming up!

A 4th being the worst GC result after two WT races, there's worse ways to start the season.

I think it's the first WT one-week GC win for you right? Kinda ironic after having won 2 Grand Tours Amazing start of the season for you, hopefully you can keep the pace until the most important races
