Ronde van Vlaanderen (WT) 253.4 kms, 19 cobbled sections The most wonderful time, of the year... At least for a part of the cycling world. Weather forecasts look great and Flanders is eager to see a first Belgian winner since 2012. Our team's main objective is trying to numb the recent criticism from our main sponsor. The easiest way to do so is meeting their preset goal, which is having somebody in the final top 10. It'll be one tough task as many riders'd love to shine here in Meerbeke. Unlike in many other editions, the breakaway was only modest in scale. Hoelgaard, Canal, Mamykin and Slagter teamed up to entertain us in the pre-hill section of Vlaanderens Mooiste. The first cobbles away from the Bruges city centre came at Nokereberg, where the four had over 8'. A crucial moment in this race came after a few cobbled sections. All of a sudden, the overwhelming majority of the pack just stopped following the others. Biggest victim was the Etixx team which lost more than half their squad, including Stannard and Böger. Phinney was involved too. That way the peloton was reduced to 38 riders only. Luckily none of our riders was sitting near the back when the major split happened. No way anyone in the back group would ever see the front of the race again, as the advantage was quickly enlarged, to an extent of over 5 full minutes. Real racing broke loose at the Oude Kwaremont. With 80 kilometers to go, the breakaway was reeled in. Cortes was racing well sitting in fifth. As soon as the Lotto guy disappeared from the front a trio accelerated. Lutsenko, Hellling and Terpstra held onto their tiny gap, until the top. At the Paterberg Terpstra went on his own. The two others were joined by Stybar, Keukeleire and Spengler soon as the pack was all over the place now. Too bad RuralvÃa riders were no longer seen near the front. That's until the camera swerved, and spotted Cortes chasing the E2 on his own. Waiting did not jump to his mind at first and he may've burned energy for nothing as he got caught by the E4, which contained Lature. Terpstra didn't want to wait either as he kept going on the flat. Behind him the same five-rider group was still attempting to catch up with him. The E3 group reeled in the E2 at the exceedingly crowded Koppenberg. For our boys in green this was an unexpected but vital comeback inside the race. We had Lature, Cortes and Gonçalves in that new E2 group. But the climb itself would not show any mercy. The E2 got split up once again and none of our 3 riders could keep up with the best. Gonçalves and Cortes lost contact and wouldn't come back anymore, while Lature was now on his own, trying to keep his place at the very back of the E3.

Ronde van Vlaanderen (WT) 253.4 kms, 19 cobbled sections Terpstra survived at the Steenbeekdries, Taaienberg and the Ladeuze but at the Boigneberg he finally got reeled in by the first chasing group. A brand new E1 six consisted of Degenkolb, Kristoff, Benoot, Boom, Terpstra and Lutsenko. The E2 with Lature sat over one minute back. At the Boigneberg Geraint Thomas tried to bridge the gap on his own, although Kristoff did everything he could to keep him from succeeding. But he did anway. Seven leaders, about 1'20" on the E2, 50 kms to go. No action at Het Foreest and the Steenberg. Benoot must have waited for the cobbled Haaghoek. One rider lost contact after his acceleration, teammate Kristoff. The gap grew to 1'40" with 35 kms left in the race. The gap remained the same at the Leberg but subsequently, Czechia's champion Stybar kicked away from the chasers. Desperate to catch up with the E1, he left his mates behind after the Berendries. Vanmarcke, Sénéchal, Lature, Keukeleire and Spengler did not or could not reply. After Tenbosse Stybar managed to bridge, mainly thanks to hesitations at the Parikeberg. The gap to the E2 was still at 1'40", with 22 kms left. As the hesitation lasted, Lature sought to bridge the decreasing gap on his own. And even though they'd come close, a sudden rush to the foot of the mythic Muur in Geraardsbergen blew the chance of coming back. Benoot launched another attack at the Kapelmuur. This time only three riders were able to keep up: Terpstra, Lutsenko and Thomas. Boom, Stybar and Degenkolb lost 30", while the Lature group was 59" down. Lature dictated the pace in his group, and reeled Stybar back in. They did lose more time on the reunited E1 with the Bosberg nearing quickly. Benoot showed off his super legs once again at the final hill, but could not shake anyone. About 45" later the chasers hit the Bosberg and they remained together too. Time to hit a slightly downhill road to Meerbeke. The chasing group'd hit that road without Sénéchal, three-time winner Kristoff and Sénéchal, who would all miss out on a top 10 spot today. At the front a new hesitation occured, as the six started staring at each other. Clearly all were damn nervous about the outcome of this edition. Their hesitation inside the final 8 kms inspired Vanmarcke to attack. He would catch up with the leaders, while Lature left the chase to Helling, Keukeleire and Spengler. They were not really happy with his attitude. Right when Vanmarcke had joined the party at the front, Terpstra was the next to launch an attack. Vanmarcke lost contact right away, along with Benoot! The remaining 4 riders countered the Dutchman's attack. Lature's allies had had enough of his energy-conserving approach and they attacked jointly. Our Bolivian dug deep to get back to these three. Spengler soon hit a little wall but Lature would not see the others back before the finish. Three kilometers. To possibly secure a historic result. Once again the six at the front came back together. Tiesj Benoot tried to anticipate and chose the left side of the road before the final corner. Much to the delight of the many Belgian fans, he relegated Degenkolb to a second place and Lutsenko to a third. Finally the Belgians have a Ronde winner again, the first one since Tom Boonen seven years ago. Exactly one minute later Lature became the 13th non-European ever in an RvV top 10. Better take another accurate look at this guy, ladies and gentlemen, because he is the very first Latin American in the top 10 of this Monument. Hats off to Aldo for making us and Bolivia proud today. Vuelta a La Rioja (1.1) La Rioja, 164.7 kms While Lature was on his way to writing history in Flanders, eight of his teammates faced one of the few sprinter races in Spain. Some hills on the road, but nonetheless a bunch sprint is the most probable outcome. Lots of rain in Spain's main wine region, but still many wanted to get in the breakaway. Countless attacks later three men finally got a gap. The trio contained Amaro, Spanish TT champion Cuadros and Aranguren. The breakaway would not reach the final 30 kilometers. The early catch did introduce a period of numerous accelerations. Nevertheless Malori, Mas Bonet, Herrada and Goeree all lost against a well-arranged pack. At the end of the race Barbero couldn't count on a train, so he jumped wheels. Before the last corner he sat in fourth position, as all potential winners were hampered by some riders that had been dropped earlier. On top of that, Barbero had to interrupt his sprint after a sudden move of Colbrelli. Theuns outsprinted Owen while Barbero finished in third. Vuelta al PaÃs Vasco (WT)  Stage 1/6, 150.4 kms One of the main domestic races of the season begins with a hilly stage, which starts and finishes in Güeñes, just outside Bilbao. A fair share of hills already, even though a powerful sprinter should be able to survive. After Van Beusichem had secured the first KoM jersey from the break, Tinkoff tore the pack apart at the second cat 3 climb. The Russian team put an end to the break of the day and dumped every one of our riders. After a wild descent a big group was about to join the first group again. At the front we spotted Barbero next to co-stage contender Matthews. Thanks to his position, our sprinter managed to avoid a big crash which did involve Guerreiro, Chávarri and Intxausti. All of them got back on their bike. However they were already confronted with a gap of over 1'. Some support from Sky kept the gap at around 1'20" for a while. A new acceleration would then result in the definitive increase of the time gap. Barbero survived the penultimate climb and realised attacks were to be expected at the last one. Realising that he probably wouldn't be able to respond, he knew sitting in a good position at the foot could be vital. He chose Mühlberger's wheel, 100% determined to remain glued to it too. But Barbero would lose it as the Austrian chased down Fabio Aru. The Sardinian would reach the last summit of today with a small advantage. Eventually Matthews' personal input was what got Aru reeled back in. Barbero had climbed quite well and still had the chance to win a stage. The pace dropped a bit but Wellens came to the front to raise it again. Barbero didn't want to be surprised and followed him to start the sprint in second. Kwiatkowski and Matthews were the next two to respond. Barbero launched right when Matthews did. Side-by-side they tackled the last hectometers. And Kwiatkowski started to close in fast as well. Matthews slacked off. Kwiatkowski and Theuns started to challenge Barbero now. But was his sprint powerful enough to win today's stage? Yes it was! But Barbero's first victory of the year it did not totally make up for the time both Chávarri and Guerreiro lost today, which is 5'50". Vuelta al PaÃs Vasco (WT) Stage 2/7, 165.7 kms The second stage is the only one that has been marked as flat. The last kms are not that easy but keeping the yellow jersey should be possible. The breakaway contained Schwarzmann, Pereiro and De Marchi. The first would collect most of the obtainable KoM points, but not enough to become the new leader. The gap got to over 10', and decreased slowly. De Marchi was dropped first, at the penultimate climb. The other two'd make it to the foot of the final one. But there they'd both surrender too. Guerreiro attacked over the last bump, in an attempt to disrupt Orica's sprint preparation. His move would not make it to the finish line though. Guerreiro shifted to plan B and set up a train for Barbero. But Theuns could count on his own train. And it seemed to go quicker than our one. However a very strong Bilbao started gaining ground, and brought the two lead sprinters almost side by side again. Barbero against Theuns? Our guy had to dive into a narrow gap at the right before he could truly launch. Theuns was strong as well but eventually Barbero did manage it off. The clear margin proved he legitimately made it two out of two. A big team performance and a moral boost after the events of yesterday. Vuelta al PaÃs Vasco (WT) Stage 3/6, 162 kms The third stage is a hilly ride to the first summit finish this year, and the first opportunity for our GC leaders to take back some time on the guys above them in the overall standings. Let us just make the best of today. The original break stranded with 90 kms to go, at the third climb. Team Sky and Tinkoff reduced the peloton to some 55 units, which did include our team's best climbers. A five-man group rode away at the steep first category climb: Van der Poel, Mohoric, Bardet, Talansky and Power. Their advantage got to a full minute, but Sky and Tinkoff reeled them in before the last climb. Our two team leaders both still looked very good. Adam Yates attacked early, Chávarri sat close and wanted to counter. Sadly he couldn't, because of 3 Sky riders blocking off the narrow road. By the time someone could get past them, the leader had already built a 45" gap. But Aru refused to throw the towel yet. He would succeed in bridging to the British leader while Chávarri was riding in third position. The two kept gaining ground on him. And on top of that, Simon Yates left him behind as well under the red kite. Meanwhile Guerreiro started gaining places all of a sudden, passing several totally exhausted riders. Aru won the stage after an impressive win that earned him a gap of 8". The Yates brothers would round out the podium as Chávarri finished in fourth and moved into the blue young leader's jersey too. Another two minutes later, Ruben Guerreiro concluded the stage in eleventh place.
