Vuelta à España - Preview
Roberto had a difficult challenge ahead of him. With the Giro in his legs and the WC still to come, he had to face up against extremely strong riders for the win in Spain. This would be no easy task.
Starters
We won't bore you with an endless list of participants, but we'll contain ourselves to the main rivals of Roberto:
Andy Schleck (Radioshack): Potentially the strongest climber in the peloton, next to Roberto. He would put up some fierce competition!
Robert Gesink & Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha): Gesink, a strong climber and a Dutch talent, would be a big threat, especially with Rodriguez besides him.
Cobo & Van Garderen (Astana): On the same team, those two pseudo-favorites could form a strong opposition together. Definitely worth mentioning.
Alejandro Valverde (Movistar): Another strong Spanish rider, in the twilight of his career.
Thibaut Pinot (FDJ): Last year's number two, Pinot had come back a year older and much stronger. He'd be looking for his first GT win.

Vuelta à España - First Victory
In stage 3, Roberto made his first:
Now it was obvious, no one was a match for Roberto Velásquez in the Vuelta.
The rest is history... |

Vuelta à España - Pure Glory
Roberto Velásquez wrote history by joining Tony Rominger and Roberto Heras, with the record of 3 Vuelta wins. More than that, he won 3 consecutive Vuelta's.
Winning a total of 6 stages (stages 3,6,15,16,17,20) Roberto squashed the opposition, winning all possible classifications, even the team classification. Only Andy Schleck hung on, finishing on a respectable 2 minutes. Knowing Roberto as we do, 2 minutes behind him in 21 stages is a great performance.
The results:
GC
1 | Roberto Velásquez | Colombia Coldeportes | 81h46'02 | IanButler | 2 | Andy Schleck | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 2'12 | | 3 | Igor Anton | Mipfre - Euskadi | + 6'26 | | 4 | Tejay Van Garderen | Astana Pro Team | + 10'19 | | 5 | Janez Brajkovic | Team Saxo Bank | + 11'54 | | 6 | Thibaut Pinot | FDJ-BigMat | + 12'22 | | 7 | Tiago Machado | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 12'53 | | 8 | Sergio Luis Henao | Sky Pro Cycling | + 13'55 | | 9 | Wout Poels | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 14'26 | | 10 | Mikel Nieve | Colombia Coldeportes | + 15'35 | IanButler |

KoM
1 | Roberto Velásquez | Colombia Coldeportes | 150 | IanButler | 2 | Andy Schleck | Radioshack Nissan Trek | 107 | | 3 | Igor Anton | Mipfre - Euskadi | 98 | |

Roberto was heading towards the World Championship with already 69 race days in his legs, but with 100% motivation.

Roberto is still no where near to Eddy Merckx.
He's great though, and he wil no doubt get even greater!
