9th October 2011 - Paris-Tours
(St Arnould en Yvelines - Tours)
So here it is. My final race of the season. Eights after my first race in sunny Oman, I end it in rainy France. However, today is a great for British cycling, as I become the first Briton since the late Tom Simpson to wear the Rainbow Jersey in a stage.
With Paris - Tours being a 'sprinter's' classic, the target is the stage win, whilst we will also look to be on the offensive with Jan or Luis.
12km: Ten riders attacked early in the stage, quickly building up a 1'12" lead.
19km: Further attacks went off the front of the peleton, and soon a large group of 18 riders were off the front.
24km: Europcar saw this as a dangerous break, and with the help of Rabobank, pulled the breakaway back.
36km: Showing off the Rainbow Stripes! I spent the early parts of the race sat in the peleton, protected by my HTC team-mates.
46km: As the weather took a turn for the worse, a group of ten escaped off the front.
66km: The French teams took control of the race, with Europcar and Saur-Sojasun setting the tempo.
122km: Reaching the halfway stage, orders were given to pull back the break. The gap had increased to 9'53", and it was close to getting out of reach.
186km: The gap was down to 3'12" with around 50km to go, and it was time for Marcel Sieberg (OmegaPharma) and Denis Flahaut (Roubaix-Lille) to try it off the front on their own.
194km: CRASH! The weather had made the road surface very slippery, and crashes were expected all day. The surprise was that it did not come earlier. Claudio Corioni (Acqua & Sapone) was the man who came a cropper.
204km: With 30km to go, the gap was down to 59", and set for a sprint finish, but that did not stop Gaetan Bille (Wallonie) trying to solo to the win.
216km: Just under the 15km to go banner, the break was caught, and it was set for a sprint showdown.
227km: Well we thought that everyone was caught... Jose Mendes (CCC Polsat) was still off the front, after attacking on one of the tight corners.
232km: With less than 2km to go, Mendes was still off the front. Were we going to catch him or had we left it too late?
233km: As the sprint began, Mendes was thankfully caught, as Jimmy Casper (Saur-Sojasun) took the initiative and started his sprint early.
24km: Casper slowed approaching the line, and I burst past him! I end the season with my 17th win of the season, and my 1st in the Rainbow Stripes. Hell of a way to end the year!

Spartacus is BMC bound
Fabian Cancellara's future was decided today, after it was revealed he will ride for the Swiss-American team BMC Racing.
Less than a week after he stated he is free to talk to teams, BMC wasted no time putting his signature on the dotted line, adding the Swiss man to their already impressive 2012 squad.
Nothing has been mentioned yet on his 2012 schedule, but no doubt he will targeting the Early Season Cobbled Classics before supporting Cadel Evans at the Tour de France,
