JuanMotr: Thanks, I thought you'd like it
FreitasPCM: Thanks for the banana
Daggen & HaRe: He did a great job, especially since he didn't have a Portuguese teammate to help him. The team's already signed two more Portuguese so next year he'll be unstoppable
the_hoyle: Indeed, winning the Worlds again would be legendary and 1000x better than Colombian NC |

Pre-Race
Maybe not too unimportant for this story: The final standings in Tour de France 2014:
| 1 | Alberto Contador | Team Saxo Bank | 85h25'24 | | 2 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas-Cannondale | + 1'42 | | 3 | Jurgen Van den Broeck | Lotto Belisol | + 4'52 | | 4 | Andy Schleck | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 6'01 | | 5 | Robert Gesink | Katusha Team | + 6'04 | | 6 | Pierre Rolland | Team Europcar | + 6'15 | | 7 | Wout Poels | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 12'57 | | 8 | Roman Kreuziger | Astana Pro Team | + 14'49 | | 9 | Janez Brajkovic | Team Saxo Bank | + 17'01 | | 10 | Tejay Van Garderen | Astana Pro Team | + 18'59 |
Nibali took 2nd place for the 2nd time in a GT in 2014, must've hurt. But anyway, over to Roberto:
GP San Sébastian 2014
Only a week before the Vuelta, this was Roberto's test to see how his form was after his first Giro. He already was 2nd and 3rd here, it was time to win this race!

Roberto gave Rui Costa free reign, 70km from the finish.

Costa made a good run for it, but eventually he got caught. He stuck around for a few more minutes to keep Roberto out of the wind, before dropping out.

Martinez found his way to the front and for the first time Roberto had a lead-out for San Sébastian.

Roberto only knew theses streets too well, he had lost too many a sprint here before, and he wouldn't lose again this time!

Even Gilbert had no answer to this one:

Result
| 1 | Roberto Velásquez | Colombia Coldeportes | 6h11'38 | IanButler | | 2 | Philippe Gilbert | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | | | 3 | Greg Van Avermaet | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | | | 4 | Alejandro Valverde | Movistar Team | s.t. | | | 5 | Andy Schleck | Radioshack Nissan Trek | s.t. | | | 6 | Johny Piqué | Sky Pro Cycling | s.t. | | | 7 | Tony Martin | Omega Pharma-Quick-Step Cycling Team | s.t. | | | 8 | Fränk Schleck | Omega Pharma-Quick-Step Cycling Team | s.t. | | | 9 | Robert Kiserlovski | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | | | 10 | Simon Clarke | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. | |
Roberto had finally taken GP san Sébastian, and he would win it many more times. He could go to the Vuelta with a lot of confidence. Who would try and stop him this time? |

Thanks
Rui was 25th on the GC, he went for the KoM jersey but closely lost it to Moncoutié. Still a nice effort, though. |

His first, but not his last! Now you're on fire and make sure you keep that 100% record!

Thanks for the many comments
Daggen: Thanks, that's a picture he'll frame
JuanMotr: He's looking good, much will depend on the startlist. If the list is too weak, I'll probably sim through it, though.
sutty68: That's a nice sentence let's hope he continues his reign through the Vuelta!
FreitasPCM: Indeed, I was real happy when I went into the final 500m with a comfortable lead
the_hoyle: Thanks
francopell: I don't know yet, I'll have to see that in the first race.
Jakstar22: Thanks mate, let's hope he can do it!
HaRe: Thanks!
rogvi97: I'll try everything I can, or at least everything Roberto can
Next report definitely up in a couple of hours max! |
