Thanks a lot Batista and baia. Motivation is actually there, just the time is missing to bring daily reports.
The Giro d`Italia is the first GT in the cycling season. It`s held in May over 3 weeks. The first Giro d'Italia started on May 13, 1909 at Milan. It`s the second most famous cycling stage race next to the Tour de France. As in other GT`s the Giro has stages for sprinters, timetrial specialists, breakaways and climbers. But actually most Giros have lots of hard and spectacular mountain stages, so it can be won by pure climbers "easier" than the Tour, where you also should be a great timetrialist.
3 riders were able to win the Giro 5 times: Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx. An incredibly number of 42 stage wins were won by Mario Cippollini and so he leads this statistic. Another great record are Petacchi`s 9 victories in one Giro. But this one is just an old one. Vincenzo Nibali won amazing 10 stages in 2011, when also winning the overall of course. Nice to see him back here in 2013 next to 2 other former winners in Damiano Cunego (2004/2010) and Michele Scarponi (2012).
The Route
The Giro starts with a team time trial in Torino and will also end with a time trial in Milano. In between lots of climbing. It might be one of the most mountaineous Giro`s ever, so all climbers came to Italy to perform at their best.
Especially the last week is extremely hard with almost no flat or hilly stages. So the Giro will be exciting until the very last day. The list of high mountains seems to be endless this year. 2x Etna, Grossglockner, Monte Crostis, Monte Zoncolan, Colle Delle Finestre just to name the most knwon.
Results
2010
1 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-ISD | 2 | Riccardo Ricco | Ceramica Flamina | 3 | Christian Vandevelde | Garmin - Slipstream | 4 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas | 5 | Michele Scarponi | Androni | ... | 20 | Daniel Martin | Garmin - Slipstream | Cunego and Ricco were in a class of their own. If I remember right they had both more than 10min to Vandevelde, who had a brilliant race wearing the leader jersey for 1-2 days and beating Nibali on the last day in a timetrial for the podium winning the stage.
Tyler Farrar also had a successful Giro with one stage win and the point jersey.
Daniel Martin had a solid race as luxury teammate for Vandevelde finishing 2nd in the Youth ranking.
2011
1 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas | 2 | Michele Scarponi | Androni | 3 | Ivan Basso | Lampre | 4 | Tejay Van Garderen | HTC Highroad | 5 | Dominico Pozzovivo | Colnago CSF | ... | 8 | Daniel Martin | Garmin-Cervelo | Nibali dominated this Giro with 10 stage wins. Scarponi was the best of the rest with Van Garderen being great in a GT for the first time in his career. He also won the Youth ranking ahead of Martin as 2nd once again. Thanks to a crash and an injury Martin lost all chances on the podium. Something he might have reached otherwise.
2012
1 | Michele Scarponi | Quick Step - Innergetic | 2 | Vincenzo Nibali | Lampre-ISD | 3 | José Rujano | Farnese Vini - Neri | 4 | Riccardo Riccò | Skil - Shimano | 5 | Juan Mauricio Soler | Astana | 6 | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | 7 | Daniel Martin | Garmin - Cervelo | 8 | Francesco Masciarelli | Ceramica Flaminia | 9 | Vladimir Efimkin | Androni Giocattoli - Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni | 10 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-ISD | ... | 19 | Peter Stetina | Garmin - Cervelo | Michele Scarponi got his revenge against Nibali. Just 11s were in between these two in the end. Very close decision. Martin climbed one step up the ranking. Peter Stetina was just like Martin in 2010 a great domestique and it will be interesting if the American can also make a jump this year.
Garmin Squad for 2013
Daniel Martin is back and this year he wants the podium. The course couldn`t be much better for a pure climber and with Stetina on his side it could be possible. Tyler Farrar is our sprinter here although there aren`t many flat stages. It`s not sure if any sprinter will finish the Giro with all the hard mountains, same obviously counts for him. Rowe, Dao and Murphy are supposed to help him, while Duggan and Butler are two more domestiques for the mountains.
Bobridge is our time trial specialist. He is supposed to lead our team in the opening team time trial.

219. E.Vona Pretty tough startlist with lots of pure climbers like Martin, Soler, Anton, Cunego, Ricco, Rujano, Zaugg, Basso, Mollema or Pozzovivo. Scarponi, Nibaliand Van Garderen maybe with the advantage of their better time trial skills.
Also surprising that Liquigas is going all-in for Cavendish. True, he is the strongest sprinter but the parcours doesn`t suit him that much.
Boasson Hagen might be the biggest favourite on the flat stages as he combines great puncheur skills with his speed. Gavazzi might be a big opponent on the other side.
A preview of the favourites will come later. |

Giro d`Italia Overall Favourites
No question Vincenzo Nibali is the top favourite. And he might have the best domestique at his side in Damiano Cunego. Two former Giro winners and more than 15 stage wins together. Lampre really have a power squad for the Giro.
Mauricio Soler is one of the World`s best climber. He rarely shows his full potential but in good form this Giro could be perfect for him. Since he transferred to Astana he seems to be back to old strength. With Arroyo, LeMevel and Intxausti he at least has one of the strongest backup.
Depending on his form the Basque could surprise everyone in the Giro. Similar to Soler Igor Anton `s home soil are the mountains. And there are enough of them. The lack of great domestiques in the Euskaltel squad could become the biggest problem.
Dan Martin improved from season to season and showed a great form in Trentino and Romandie. Hopefully not too early. With Stetina he has a one of the top3 domestiques next to him. The podium is the goal and it`s surely possible.
Ricco and Van Garderen are definitely interesting. HTC really got a nice team this season and so they are able to send both of their leaders to the Giro, where both could reach the podium.
Michele Scarponi is not as strong as in his best years. But similar strong as last Giro, where he won ahead of Nibali. Plus he got his super domestique in Cataldo, who could also go for a top 10. The team change to Quickstep last year really paid off for the Italian.
Mollema and Pozzovivo are both pure climbers and showed in the last 2 seasons how to act with 2 leaders in the Giro top 10. Colnago might become the most active wild card team in the mountain stages.
Jose Rujano for Androni is a difficult bet. Sometimes like last season he is one of the strongest in the mountains finishing on the podium. In other years he has to fight hard to reach the top 10. Definitely another top climber in this race.
Outside Bets
With Karpets, Masciarelli, Zaugg, Hoogerland, Bonnafond, Sörensen, Kiserlovski, Moreno and Sella more riders could surprise and jump into the top 10. |

Giro d`Italia Top Sprinters
Mark Cavendish is without a question the fastest sprinter at the moment. Therefore he lacks the puncheur skills, that might be required in this edition. Liquigas at least built their team around him and won`t have GC ambitions this year. In 2012 he won the point jersey and proved most experts wrong, who said that the jersey will go to a climber.
Napolitano for WildCard team Acqua & Sapone is a good bet for a stage win in his home country. He improved in the past and won classics like Vattenfall Cyclassics.
Farrar won the point jersey back in 2010. He won`t get it this year for sure with so many mountain stages. Similar problem than Cavendish. Both of them don`t have the puncheur qualities like most other sprinters.
Boasson Hagen might be the sprinter to beat. Great speed and great uphill skills. He might even be inside the top5 for the Youth jersey if the Sky leader is in a good shape.
Modolo is another Italian sprinter. He already has a Giro stage win on his palmares and improved since then. Colnago has another good stage hope with him.
Not as fast as the others but RadioShack`s Ventoso is a fast man with good puncheur skills.
Leezer improved a lot and is Rabobank`s best man in the sprints. He could surprise the others and grab a stage.
Last but not least Francesco Gavazzi. Another Italian riding for the Lampre squad. Not a pure sprinter but one of the fastest man after a more hilly stage.
Other sprinters deserving a mention are Bazayev, Renshaw, Chicchi, Dao, Mondory, Petacchi, Gatto and Guardini.
Especially first one could do well on the hilly terrain. |

The Giro 2012 starts with a 19,3km team time trial in Torino. The Garmin squad was somewhere in the middle of the favourite teams. Most important for us is to avoid a big time lose. We even want to gain time on other favourites. In especially the Colnago duo Mollema, Pozzovivo have a weak time trial squad and should be gapped today.
All teams finished within 2min today with Garmin being on a good 7th thanks to Bobridge and Farrar. Good start, especially as the first GC favourites are Ricco and Van Garderen, who are just 18s ahead of us. Soller following with 8s ahead of us. Then there`s already Dan Martin gaining time on all the other big favourites.
Leopard Trek around Oliver Zaugg, who will also be the first race leader, win this team time trial.
Stay tuned. The next stages are looking really promising and the sprinters can start their Giro then.
Hopefully Farrar feels good and can show something before the big mountains start.

Sorry for no pictures. I played the stage first in 3D but the result was totally bugged. Garmin was by far last although I tried a lot of tactics. Euskaltel won one try although they have far weaker time trialists. So pretty weird. That`s why I decided to simulate the TTT to get a more realistic result.
All the other stages including every ITT will of course be played in 3D mode.

TTT's always get strange results, but Euskaltel winning one try?
7th is a good result (especially in a TTT ), hope you can close the gap with the rest as soon as possible.
Oh yeah, and I like the fact that Zaugg is in pink.
