Thanks for the comments and the Good luck wishes for LBL.
True. I experienced the same in the Management Game, where the mid stage attack also took the win. One reason why I wanted Kessiakoff in this group. A pity that he lost contact although he had all his energy left.
"La Doyenne" is the 4th monument this season. It`s the third of the 3 races during the Ardennes week. The hills on the route are longer than in AGR in general and steeper than in the FW. It`s also the longest of the 3 races with ~260km. Some of the hills have averages above 10%. It`s held since 1892. Record champ is Eddy Merckx with 5 wins.
Result in 2012
1 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-ISD | 2 | Alexander Kolobnev | Team Katusha | 3 | Fränk Schleck | Astana | 4 | Andy Schleck | Leopard Trek | 5 | Philippe Gilbert | Liquigas - Cannondale | 6 | Juan José Cobo Acebo | Team Movistar | 7 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas - Cannondale | 8 | Benoît Vaugrenard | FDJ | 9 | Simon Gerrans | Farnese Vini - Neri | 10 | Enrico Gasparotto | Liquigas - Cannondale |
Cunego won the sprint of a 12 rider group last season with no Garmin guy being in this deciding group. Hesjedal finished best as 19th being in the 2nd group together with Vansummeren. Surely we expect more this season.
Garmin squad 2013
No surprise that it`s the same squad than for the first two Ardennes classics. Roche will be our leader. With his good sprint skills this classic might suit him the most as the final climb isn`t as steep as in the other two classics.

Biggest names missing surely Amstel winner Cancellara and Peter Sagan, who was expected to be a big contender for all 3 classics especially after his great spring so far. But obviously he is avoiding the Ardennes completely this year concentrating on stage races so is Vaugrenard, who was also a top 10 contender here as proven last year.
Favourites
***** Gilbert
**** A.Schleck, Cunego
*** F.Schleck, Contador, Kreuziger
** Gesink, Nibali, Antón, Monfort, Riccò
* Velits, Roche, Van Den Broeck, Scarponi, Martens
How could it be different. Gilbert is the top favourite with the Schlecks, Contador, Kreuziger and last years winner Cunego being the biggest opponents. Also the Belgiums Monfort, Van Den Broeck, Seeldraeyers or Hermans can be expected to perform well on home ground.
Garmin`s Roche and also Belgium Vansummeren have outside chances here aiming the top10 for sure. |

Liège - Liège
Coming to the 4th monument in professional cycling. Will we see another surprising winner like in the other Ardennes classics or will one of the top favourites win today?
The weather is looking great, so expect a fair battle.
It took quite a while until a first group was creates succesfully.
Denifl, Lagutin, Gusev and Fröhlinger are all decent puncheurs. So it`s a group you must watch. On the other side it`s still a long way to go.
Lampre (Cunego), Liquigas (Gilbert) and Sky (Uran) are doing the pace. Surprisingly the British team did not nominate Lövkvist for their race, who was still there for the first two classics and is normally the team`s leader in the hard classics.
B.Schmitz and S.Vandousselaere join them and so it`s finally a group of 6 riding away.
Then the first mid stage attack. It`s Samuel Sanchez followed by our Swede Kessiakoff, who still is in great form.
Meanwhile the 2nd RadioShack leader Ben Hermans crashed behind.
Easily these two reach the breakaway but the peloton is not happy either and is close behind.
Still 134km to go and just a bit more than 1min gap.
The high pace behind effects the first splits. And it`s a massive one letting several big names behind. Gilbert and Frank Schleck being the biggest names.
Luckily all the Garmins are in the first group.
Also the breakaway including Kessiakoff and Sanchez are back in the group now. No chance for these to get away.
33 riders in this group now with an advance of 1min to the next 12.
But after some more kilometers a bigger group is coming back.
But obviously still not all favourites. Riders like Gilbert, Frank Schleck, Martens or Wegmann are still in another group almost 2min behind.
With ~100km to go another try of a late attack. Sky`s Uran starts with Kessiakoff again countering. The Swede is having awesome weeks at the moment.
But also this move failed and both are back in the group soon.
So the next attacks. The two Skil leaders Serpa and Veelers as also Rabobank`s Michael Rogers.
Garmin`s Van Der Velde is doing the pace now trying to avoid the fusion with the Gilbert/Schleck group.
Still more riders try to attack. Again Sky`s Uran, Sicard and Geslin.
With 85km to go the 6 attackers have a 35s gap and growing while the Gilbert group is still behind. Van Der Velde is doing a terrific job now. The group is long stretched so he has to slow down a bit giving Roche, Kessiakoff and Hesjedal a chance to come to the front again as they are still behind the corner like many others of this 120 rider peloton.
Starting with the harder 2nd half with the big hills the group is down to 60. Unfortunately some riders made the bridge on the first hills. So Gilbert is back in the front group, while Schleck is still behind. At least his team mates Contador and Velits are still there.
43km and still almost 3'12 for the 6 riders. Leopard is doign the pace. Obviously for Gesink as Andy is doing the pace now.
This acceleration brings the group down to 20. Riders not in this group. F. Schleck, Monfort, Velits, Sanchez or Hermans.
Totally exhausted Andy Schleck is falling back with 25km to go. Also his team mates Gerdemann and Wegmann can`t follow. So it`s only Gesink being in the group for Leopard now.
Hermans, Monfort, Wiggins and Martens realize that it`s coming to the final phase and so they attack from behind trying to join the other favourites.
In front it`s now Uran riding solo with some riders in between him and the favourites.
Power horse Vansummeren and Kessiakoff are doing the pace now in the group down to 13 and still 4 Garmins here although Hesjedal won`t last long as he is riding at his limit already.
Kreuziger was the first with an attack and Roche followed. But as the Czech stopped soon afterwards it took another kilometer when top favourite Gilbert attacked and this time again Roche counters.
This splits the group and it`s down to 10 now but including Veelers, Geslin and Serpa from the former break.
And next to Roche it`s still Vansummeren and Kessiakoff there but quite exhausted now.
With 1,5km Uran still has a nice gap to the rest. Gilbert is leading the group with Roche being perfectly placed behind him, while Veelers is leading out Kreuziger. Also Contador and Evans are well placed.
Gilbert shows his power and creates a gap to Roche, who can`t follow. Soon Uran is caught and riding on the right side of the road blocking Gilbert this way.
This was the chance for Roche, who sprinted faster than Uran and on the last 10m he overtook the Colombian with Gilbert not able to pass him that blocked.
Awesome result by Roche. Not undeserved win in La Doyenne by him and surely the biggest result in his career. Also the most successful season for Garmin so far winning the our first two monuments ever without having the best riders therefore.
Uran keeps a great 2nd ahead of Gilbert, who is really pissed by Uran as he already looked like the sure winner before the Sky rider intentionally changed sides. 4th goes to Kreuziger, who had another good classic ahead of a surprising Pineau and Contador. Vansummeren and Kessiakoff just outside the top 10 22s behind with Hesjedal falling back on the 20th in the end.

But just out of curiosity, how many percent of the price money did you give Uran? Must've been quite a lot.

Seeing that my story goes onto the 2nd page in the story section it surely needs an update.
@ MitchNL: Actually it wasn`t a disappointing Ardennes week for me. Winning La Doyenne but also top 10 in Amstel Gold Race. Only Fleche Wallone we missed the top 10 but not too far behind.
@ lokytrew: Thanks a lot. Wasn`t expecting this.
@cunego59: Thanks. Always nice to get a banana.
@ Avin: Sure it needs a lot of luck with a 79 puncheur against the 83 of Gilbert. I might want to contract Uran then next season for doing more of this.
@ Alakagom: True. I have better classics than normal. Yeah. Uran should get an Irish ID now.
@ Pellizotti: Just a little bit.
@ Freitas: True. 3 seasons without any big monument win and not 2/4 so far in this season.
@ dienblad: Thanks. Actually Gilbert chose the free side of the road but Uran decided to move in front of him to block him. Was funny to watch as I rarely have seen such an extreme example of blocking in PCM. Good for me.
@Sutty: Thanks for the banana.
Now coming to race updates. I have my last exam in the first exam block on Monday. Then some days off before heading to a short holiday in first half of March and 2-3 more exams in the end of March. So there might be some updates in early March before not having time again later on in the month.
So stay tuned for a thrilling Romandie and especially the following Giro d`Italia, where Dan Martin will be our race leader with Farrar being there for the sprints. |

Thanks.
Sorry for the story break. I had university exams in the last two months, so less time for PCM. Plus a short time holiday in London and other duties, that were more important than this story.
I will try to continue this story soon. Hoping to have enough motivation after almost 2 months break of PCM.
Before the first GT of the season with the Giro starts, here a short report of the Romandie.
I decided to make just a short summary as the course was really boring and half of the stages have been played more than a month ago. So I wasn`t that motivated to make a report of a race I can barely remember.
The Tour de Romandie is a Suisse Pro Tour Race in the Romandie region.
It`s held since 1947. On six stages the riders have to prove their skills in timetrial and mountain stages and so it`s a perfect preparation for the Giro d`Italia. Most wins has Stephen Roche with 3.
Result in 2012
1 | Rémy Di Grégorio | FDJ | 2 | Robert Kišerlovski | Skil - Shimano | 3 | Andrey Kashechkin | Lampre-ISD | 4 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas - Cannondale | 5 | Michael Albasini | Team HTC - Highroad | 6 | Benoît Vaugrenard | FDJ | 7 | Robert Gesink | Leopard Trek | 8 | Rigoberto Urán | Sky Professional Cycling Team | 9 | Carlos Barredo | Quick Step - Innergetic | 10 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky Professional Cycling Team | First 3 surprised with a mid-stage success, while Albasini and Sagan looked the strongest in a puncheur suited course.
Dan Martin as 19th and Stetina as 25th had a decent preparation not more. The two time trials didn`t suit our team that much, so it was hard to reach more.
Garmin squad in 2013
Martin and Stetina use this race as last preparation before the Giro starts. They have already a good form. Also Farrar and Rowe are in our Giro squad, while Fuglsang is not in top form yet preparing for the Tour of California.

Stage 1:
1 | Paul Martens | Rabobank Cycling Team | 4'41 | 2 | Alberto Contador | Pro Team Astana | + 3 | 3 | Sébastien Rosseler | Team RadioShack | + 4 | 4 | Marcel Wyss | Geox - TMC | s.t. | 5 | Thomas Löfkvist | Sky ProCycling | s.t. | 6 | Tony Martin | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | 7 | Tiago Machado | Team RadioShack | + 5 | 8 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky ProCycling | + 6 | 9 | Sylvain Chavanel | Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | 10 | Janez Brajkovič | Team RadioShack | + 7 | T. Martin obviously is not in best shape at the moment although this course should really suit him. Contador is looking very well in 2nd, while Martens was the surprise today. He is a decent time trialist but nobody had him on the list today.
Dan Martin lost his typical time of 27s in the time trial.
Stage 2:
1 | Paul Martens | Rabobank Cycling Team | 4h15'08 | 2 | Alberto Contador | Pro Team Astana | s.t. | 3 | Kevin Seeldraeyers | Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | 4 | Daniel Martin | Team Garmin - Cervélo | + 19 | 5 | Janez Brajkovic | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 6 | Thomas Löfkvist | Sky ProCycling | + 35 | 7 | Johnny Hoogerland | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | + 45 | 8 | Rui Costa | Movistar Team | + 1'02 | 9 | Tejay Van Garderen | HTC - Highroad | + 1'12 | 10 | Simon Spilak | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | Martens proved his brilliant form and also takes the hilly 2nd stage ahead of Contador and Seeldraeyers. Martin was in their group as well, but lost some ground in the sprint.
Stage 3:
1 | David De la Fuente | Geox - TMC | 4h16'57 | 2 | Alberto Contador | Pro Team Astana | + 1'52 | 3 | Paul Martens | Rabobank Cycling Team | s.t. | 4 | Thomas Löfkvist | Sky ProCycling | s.t. | 5 | Marco Marcato | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 6 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky ProCycling | s.t. | 7 | Johnny Hoogerland | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 8 | Matthias Frank | Rabobank Cycling Team | s.t. | 9 | Simon Spilak | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | 10 | Rui Costa | Movistar Team | s.t. | David De la Fuente takes the win out of the breakaway, while Martin was within the next small group keeping his high GC position.
Stage 4:
1 | Cyril Lemoine | Saur - Sojasun | 3h55'24 | 2 | Fabio Duarte | Geox - TMC | s.t. | 3 | Steve Houanard | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 4 | Geoffroy Lequatre | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 5 | Martin Mortensen | Leopard Trek | s.t. | 6 | Javier Francisco Aramendia | Euskaltel - Euskadi | s.t. | 7 | Christopher Sutton | Sky ProCycling | s.t. | 8 | Danilo Hondo | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | 9 | Martin Velits | HTC - Highroad | s.t. | 10 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky ProCycling | + 1'32 | Breakaway win by Lemoine with Boasson Hagen leading the peloton.
Most notable in this stage was a crash in the final 10km with many GC riders. Alberto Contador was the unluckiest. The Spaniard had to abandon and will miss the next 2 weeks. Also Lövkvist and Brajkovic lost time today as they have been involved in the crash.
Good for Martens and Martin. First one loses his biggest opponents for the time trial, while Martin is climbing to 2nd overall.
Stage 5:
1 | Paul Martens | Rabobank Cycling Team | 31'35 | 2 | Tony Martin | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 10 | 3 | Janez Brajkovič | Team RadioShack | + 11 | 4 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky ProCycling | + 21 | 5 | Thomas Löfkvist | Sky ProCycling | + 31 | 6 | Rui Costa | Movistar Team | + 34 | 7 | David Le Lay | AG2R La Mondiale | + 38 | 8 | Simon Spilak | Lampre - ISD | + 46 | 9 | Kevin Seeldraeyers | Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | 10 | Thomas De Gendt | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | + 48 | Martens also takes the longer hilly time trial ahead of Martin.
In the overall Boasson Hagen moves to 2nd and also Rui Costa overtakes Dan Martin, who is 4th now.
Stage 6:
1 | Vladimir Gusev | Katusha Team | 4h03'50 | 2 | Thibaut Pinot | FDJ | + 27 | 3 | Steve Morabito | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | 4 | Cristiano Salerno | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | 5 | Mads Christensen | Saxo Bank SunGard | s.t. | 6 | Martijn Maaskant | Team Garmin - Cervélo | + 52 | 7 | Michael Albasini | HTC - Highroad | + 1'17 | 8 | Marcel Wyss | Geox - TMC | s.t. | 9 | Manuel Belletti | Colnago - CSF Inox | s.t. | 10 | Francisco José Ventoso | Team RadioShack | s.t. |
Breakaway win again with Maaskant missing the final attack and wasn`t able to reach them with his later attack. The peloton finished 9'17 behind. This also means that Gusev will move up to 2nd overall and also Morabito and Wyss take care for Suisse riders in the top 10. Martin moves down to 5th but still had a good preparation.
Martens the surprising race winner but in his great form you could have seen this coming after the prologue.
Maaskant missed 4 points for the KoM jersey and finished 3rd in this ranking.
Final result
1 | Paul Martens | Rabobank Cycling Team | 17h20'00 | 2 | Vladimir Gusev | Katusha Team | + 1'18 | 3 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky ProCycling | + 1'51 | 4 | Rui Costa | Movistar Team | + 2'00 | 5 | Daniel Martin | Team Garmin - Cervélo | + 2'12 | 6 | Steve Morabito | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | 7 | Johnny Hoogerland | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | + 2'16 | 8 | Marcel Wyss | Geox - TMC | + 2'22 | 9 | Kevin Seeldraeyers | Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 2'25 | 10 | Simon Spilak | Lampre - ISD | + 2'29 |

First 3 stages including the hardest one was played before the break.
I will probably start the Giro in the next days. At the weekend or so.
Then I will surely have a break over over Eastern as I am not at home. |
