Not the best results for BobridgeSad
but a good start for Keukeleire in TDUSmile

PS - Why isn't Cavendish in his World RR jerseyFrown

YvesStevens
4th is good if you look to your opponents, your season start is good !

FreitasPCM
Nice start with Keukeleire. Pity about Bobridge's national champs though.

@ sutty68: Take another look, he is in the world champ jersey!
@ YvesStevens: it was actually a 3rd, only Hoste collected bonus seconds, so in the GC Keukeleire is 4th; and thanks!

With Mark Cavendish in the orange leaders jersey, the peloton will face the 2nd stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. It's a hilly stage from Lobethal to Stirling. In the beginning of the race, the riders can battle for the KOTM-sprints (and the jersey) on the Fox Creek. In the last part, there are 4 laps around Stirling. The finish, after an uphill part, is after 147.7 kilometres. It's unlikely that we will see a mass sprint here.
img832.imageshack.us/img832/5509/1route.jpg

A goup of 8 riders, including Jack Bobridge, try to get into an early breakaway. The group can stay in froentoso (Movistar) takes the most points, followed by Florian Vachon (AG2R) and Americo Novembrini (Androni).
img718.imageshack.us/img718/5144/2is1.jpg

The peloton is closing the group in before the ascent of the Fox Creek. But 3 riders stay in front of the peloton and can ride for the KOTM-sprints. It's Jack Bobridge who crosses the line in first place, and secures himself of the KOTM-jersey. Ventoso and Novembrini join him, while some kilometres later, also Francesco Failli (Farnese) and Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R) close in, so there are 5 leaders.
img600.imageshack.us/img600/7922/3kotm.jpg

The 5 get a maximum gap of 4 minutes to the peloton. Ventoso wins the 2nd Intermediate sprint, in fornt of Novembrini and Bobridge. When the penultimate lap starts, 42 kilometres to go, the peloton is only 1'15 behind.
img838.imageshack.us/img838/6146/442km.jpg

It takes the peloton, led by Nissan - Radioshack and Sky, 1 lap to catch the BOTD. So with 20 kilometres remaining the peloton is togheter.
img836.imageshack.us/img836/4084/520km.jpg

Well, not for long.... We see the reason why Nissan - Radio Shack was leading the peloton: Fabian Cancellara attacks with 19 kilometres to go.
img28.imageshack.us/img28/9448/619km.jpg

With the hilly finish, we believe that Lieuwe Westra has a chance to win the stage, so we organize a chase to catch Cancellara. The Swiss rider gets a maximum lead of 30 seconds, but with about 10 kilometres to go, his adventure has ended.
img510.imageshack.us/img510/6089/710km.jpg

Not for long: after recovering for 3 kilometres, Spartacus attacks again! Michael Rogers (Sky) and Bjorn Leukemans (BMC) go in the counter attack.
img525.imageshack.us/img525/5710/87km.jpg

The 2 can join Cancellara, but the chasing peloton can't! So with 1200 metres to go, it will be a menage a trois for the win. The peloton is '20 behind. Westra has chosen the wheel of Chris Horner and now aims for a top 5 finish.
img51.imageshack.us/img51/25/91200m.jpg

Fabian Cancellara for sure was the strongest rider today and fully deserves the win! He even creates a gap of '10 to Rogers, '18 to Leukemans and '30 to Danail Petrov (Saur), who wins th esprint of the peloton. Lieuwe Westra finishes in 5th place and Niki Terpstra in 8th.

Word from the DS
Cancellara showed today why he is called Spartacus. It was pretty impressive: attacking twice and having th ebest sprinter. We are happy with place 5 and 8 in the stage!

Stage 3 brings the riders from Unley to Victor Harbor. After a hilly first part, including the Sellicks Hill, the only categorized climb of the day, the riders ride toward the coast. The last part is flat, except for a small hill 3-4 kilometres before the finish. The stage will most likely end in a mass sprint, but can the hill bring a surprise?
img197.imageshack.us/img197/5509/1route.jpg

The team works hard to let a complete peloton start the ascend to Sellicks Hill. The reason is that Jack Bobridge wants to defend his KOTM-jersey. He attacks with a kilometre of climbing to go, but starts fading with the line in sight. So he gets outsprinted by Garmin's Daniel Lloyd, but still 12 points for Bobridge.
img810.imageshack.us/img810/5541/2kotm.jpg

Lloyd falls back in the peloton, but Bobridge finds himself up front with Farnese Vini's Claudio Corioni. Corioni wins the first Intermediate sprint and with 69 kilometres to go the 2 have a gap of 2'34 to the peloton.
img217.imageshack.us/img217/9176/3is1.jpg

Only a few hundred metres before the riders reach the coastline, Corioni and Bobridge sprint for the 2nd Intermediate sprint. And again Corioni is the winner. Mark Cavendish wins the sprint of the peloton, just like in the first IS, at 3'28. 44 kilometres remaining.
img718.imageshack.us/img718/4946/4is2.jpg

The 2 leaders approach Victor Harber and now ride through the dunes. Jack Bobridge uses the ascend of a dune to attack and tries it in his own. Reason for it: the peloton follows at 1'01 22 kilometres before the finish.
img502.imageshack.us/img502/5876/522km.jpg

But the young Aussie's attempt isn't succesful and lasts only 12 kilometres. Just before the 10km bow, the peloton with the Lotto - Ridley sprint train (for Kenny Dehaes) up front catch Bobridge.
img12.imageshack.us/img12/5587/610km.jpg

4 kilometres before the finish, the peloton starts the ascend of the last dune. The road ascends a few hundred metres with a gradient up to 6%. This is the moment Lieuwe Westra has waited for. The Dutch champion launches his attack and nobody can follow. The Lotto - Ridley guys loose speed and suddenly there is a gap!
img148.imageshack.us/img148/7805/73600m.jpg

When the organization of the teams has started again, Westra is already '21 in front of them. The last kilometre has started and it looks like it's going to be the first Monster-win of the season!
img215.imageshack.us/img215/537/81kmh.jpg

Koldo Fernández (Euskaltel) comes very close, but can't prevent Westra from winning the 3rd stage in the Santos Tour Down Under! What a great ride Smile. Baden Cooke (Team Qantas) takes the 3rd place.

Word from the DS
What we didn't achieved last year, we have done now: a stage win in the Tour Down Under. Firstly, Bobridge did a good job with collecting th epoints. He didn't mean to be in the breakaway, but when you get a 1'30 lead, you won't let you fall back. Then Westra did a great job with an amazing punch in the dunes. I wasn't sure of the win, but luckily he was!

As long as Monster Enegry isn't on the black list, he's clean, just like the rest of the team Cool
