Ardennes Week

La Fleche Wallone

Race 2 of Ardennes week. The climb up the legendary Mur de Huy awaited us at the finish!

i.imgur.com/eXjpCQg.png

I was assigned the free role once again with Ania leading and top favourite for the win. The five man break was allowed to get away to a 5 minutes advantage. The pack started chasing and caught two of them with 25 km to go. Duteil and Oomen attacked. With 15 km to go, Oomen was with one of the surviving break riders in front, with another rider 30 seconds behind, Duteil another 10 seconds behind and the break of 45, including me, chasing them all, 55" behind the Oomen duo. Duteil and the trailing break rider were caight with 12 km to go. Everyone was caugth with 6 km to go. The peloton was down to 25 riders on the approach to the Mur. I attacked at the base of the Mur, with 1.5 km to go. No one else got away from the pack and I soloed to victory. My first ever World Tour classic win, and that too at the Ardennes!

Ardennes Week

Liege - Bastogne - Liege

After the surprising win at La Fleche Wallone, I was fired up to get a good result in this race. That would be the perfect way to end this already successful week. I haven't done well in this race in the past, in the three editions that I've participated. I was hoping to improve that record too.

i.imgur.com/iHcqX80.png

I was in a free role again with Ania as leader and the top favpurite fpor the win, again. The break of the day was a solo rider, who was allowed a gap of seven minutes. The pack split with the pace of the chase with 130 km to go but came back together 20 km later. I got dropped from the peloton with 35 km to go, mostly because I had slipped too far back in the pack. I got back to the group with 25 km to go. The attacks among the favourites started with 18 km left. I found myself in the fourth group on the road inside the last 15 km. And that's pretty much how it remained till the end. The groups in front splintered, with Alaphilippe beating Simon Yates in a two-way sprint at the finish. I finished 13th, coming third in the sprint for eleventh in our group.

To be honest, Ardennes week hasn't been bad at all. A top 20, a top 15 and a win! My best ever performance in this part of the calendar! Maybe I should've been coming here regularly in the past.

After your win in FV, 13th doesn't look like a great result, but overall the Ardennes Week has been quite succesfull for you Grin

Yes it has been. A nice confidence boost for sure. Now a bit of a break before Dauphine. Time to enjoy the Giro and see how Formolo goes there Grin

Ripley
Great win on the Mur de Huy! In LBL you just have to dig deep and stay with the front group, everybody's suffering. Probably impossible to beat Alaphilippe and Yates in any case.

Thanks Grin.

Haven't quite cracked the code for LBL yet, although this is my best result yet. So hopefully, it gets better in the future!

I was on a self-imposed exile from this story for the past couple of weeks. Now I'm back Grin

June

The month of May was very good for us. Formolo finished 3rd in the Giro in a competitive field. I was back on the bike for races in June with the Dauphine as my preparation for the Tour.

Criterium Dauphine

We had a strong team lining up at the Dauphine with Barguil, Ania and Phinney among the starters.

I was one of the favourites for the Stage 1 Prologue along with Phinney. I was 1 second down on the fastest time at the first time check. I improved to beat the best time by 4 seconds at the finish. I held on till the end and won the stage by mere miliseconds. I would be the GC leader overnight!

i.imgur.com/hdJzr34.png

Stage 2 was one for the sprinters. I enjoyed my day in the Yellow Jersey.

i.imgur.com/0x9SpZJ.png

The four man break was caught 5 km from the line. I finished in the pack but lost the GC lead on countback!

Stage 3 had a similar profile to the previous one. Another four man break was caught just 3 km from the line this time. A bunch sprint decided the stage.

Stage 4 was another ITT! I was among the favourites again, along with Phinney. I was fastest through the first split but kept losing time in the next two sectors. I was 2nd after the second time check, 10 seconds down. I ended up 3rd, 43" slower than stage winner Ibanez, who also took the lead in the GC.

I was one of the favourites on Stage 5. The break was caught with 20 km to go, just before the second intermediate sprint point. I could not follow the decisive move, whereas Barguil did. He would finish 6th on the stage while I managed 9th. I dropped to 5th in the GC.

Hermanski joined the break on Stage 6. They were caught on the second climb. The peloton was down to 60 riders after the fourth climb. Two riders attacked on the fifth climb but were caught. Power attacked on the last climb. I followed the move along with three others but couldn't catch up to him. I attacked again 1 km from the top of the climb, distancing the others in my group. I was 15 seconds behind Power at the top, with the next group 20 seconds behind. I was caught by the group behind 5 km from the finish. Power went on to win the stage while we were caught on the line by the pack.

Stage 7 saw Hermanski join a ten man break who pulled a thirteen minute lead. The break was down to 7 riders on the fourth climb. Hermanski was back in the pack. Barguil and two others attacked 8 km from the top of the climb. Nairo Quintana and Power were the next to attack, 5 km from the summit. Barguil was back in the pack soon after but the Nairo and Power were not caught. The break won and the latter duo gained some time in the GC.

Ania, Barguil and I were all among the favourites for the Stage 8. The break consisted of four riders. Quintana was involved in a crash but he recovered. The peloton was down to 60 riders at the top of the fourth climb. One rider from the break was caught on the next climb. Two riders attacked from the rbeak, but they weren't of any danger to the GC. One of them was caught on the seventh climb. Everyone in the break was caught on the eighth climb. One rider attacked. The pack was down to 30 riders. I attacked 2 km from the summit of the last climb. Vuillermoz, Polanc and Ambroise followed. Nairo was chasing and caught us at the top of the climb. Ibanez and Power were in the next group on the group. 21 " behind. We were caught by the pack before the finish. I sprinted to 6th with Barguil 8th. There was no change in the GC.

A Top5 + a stage win isn't a bad result at all. Now onto Le Tour to finally get a great result there Smile

Thanks Smile. A small matter of the NCs before I head off to the Tour but they aren't a priority this year. Also, I do have a podium at the Tour but the aim is to improve that Grin

National Championships

This time of the year last year was incredible. In my first year participating in the Dutch national championships, I won the Road Race! I'd never imagined switching nationalities would turn out like this. I haven't put much emphasis on these races this year, but I think my form is good enough to again be competitive.

Individual Time Trial

i.imgur.com/7YhT1Np.png

My performance in the time trial last was quite disappointing. Having already won two ITTs this season, I was sure of a much better result. I was the second top favourite after Dumoulin. I was not feeling very well but I gave it my all on the road. I ended up meeting the expectations of the bookies - 2nd place at the finish, 24 seconds slower than Dumoulin. A huge improvement from last year.

Road Race

i.imgur.com/JelTSoT.png

I started this race wearing the National Champions jersey which I have worn proudly for the past year. The day's break was caught with just a couple of kilometers to go. I did not have good positioning to try a similar attack as last year. I missed the winning move and finished with the first cashing group behind two riders. I ended up 12th, handing over my Jersey to the new Dutch National Champion Mathieu van der Poel.

July

The hallowed month for cycling is upon us again. No surprises with where I'm heading for my next race.

Tour de France

The team was mainly focused around climbing. Both Formolo and I were co-leaders for this race. We had no sprinter lining up despite there being 12 stages rated as flat!

i.imgur.com/1H3IGyh.png

Stage 1 was a medium length Prologue. Palik and Phinney were among the favourites here. I started off well but had a bad second sector to be down in 40th place at the end of it. I recovered to finish in 21st, 1'13" behind stage winner Dumoulin, who wore the Maillot Jaune for the day. Palik was 3rd, Phinney was 4th.

Stage 2 was the first one for the sprinters. The break were caught with 10 km to go and the stage was decided in a bunch sprint.

Stage 3 saw Uran being dropped early. High winds caused splits in the pack behind the break. The latter were caught with 3 km left. Once again, the sprinters took the win. I moved up to 18th in the GC.

Stage 4 was the Team Time Trial. We were one the favourites for this stage and finished 2nd, 19" down on winners Gazprom (Kwiatkowski, Dumoulin, Aru, Kelderman). Swissair (S.Yates, Miguel Angel Lopez) were 3rd, losing 46". De Koninck lost 2'33" to put Nairo Quintana onto the back-foot early on. I moved up to 7th in the GC.

Stage 5 was yet another flat stage and the sprinters did their thing. We had a new KOM leader in Vangstad, who took the points on this stage.

Nice start with a good TTT despite the sub-par prologue. A bit worrying the current fitness when starting Le Tour, but hopefully that means he won't be tired at the end of the race.

Also, unless it's a fantasy route that i don't remember now, i'm sure you are racing in the 2009 route, right?
