Stage 18 - 21

Stage 18

The stage finish would be on the Tourmalet and this would be an important stage in the final shake-up of the GC. Nairo Quintana once again joined the break along with seven others. Although, he was in 7th place, he was 19 minutes down on leader Pinot. Despite this, the peloton were not taking chances and reeled them in on the first climb. Another break of four rider formed but they too were caught. The peloton had 50 riders remaining after the descent. Nairo once again attacked and formed a break with another rider. Only Barguil, Craddock and I remained in the lead group for Duvel. The break was caught on the second climb. Six riders attacked 2 km from the summit, with Nairo once again among them. He was joined by Power and Ibanez this time. They pulled out to a three minute lead after the descent. The 30 rider peloton caught the break at the base of the Tourmalet. 10 riders, none of them a threat to the GC, attacked with 22 km left. Barguil attacked with 15 km left. He was soon joined by Bardet. With 6 km left, just one rider remained in front from the ten man attacking group. Barguil and four others, including Bardet and Pinot, were in the second group on the road, trailing by 30 seconds. I was with nine others in E3, with Kwiatkoski and Sagan both there. Yates and Jungels had been dropped. I picked up the pace and dropped others in my group. I nearly caught up to Barguil's group, finishing 6th, with my teammate coming home in 4th. He moved up to 6th in the GC, while I climbed to 11th.

Stage 19 was a welcome break from after the arduous climbing. An eight man break was allowed to form including Vanmarcke for us. A lot of riders were dropped in the run in to the finish line, but the top of the GC was unaffected. The break survived and Vanmarcke claimed 3rd.

Stage 20

i.imgur.com/oqzRhMb.png

Like always, I was hoping for a good showing in the ITT, and with it maybe a chance to move into the top ten in the GC. I started off well, passing the first time check in 2nd palce, 12" off the best time. It went downhill from there! I reached the second time check having already lost 2'43" and marginally recovered to cross the line 2'37" in arrears. I ended up 3'7" down on stage winner Ibanez, in a lowly 17th place. Dumoulin finised 2nd. Barguil lost more than 7 minutes, to drop back to 6th in the GC again. I fell to 13th in the GC.

Stage 21 to Champs Elysses was the usual parade of the champions and this time the French were toasting one of their own as the winner of le Tour after a long long time. The day's break was caught with 15 km left. I tried a late attack with 8 km to go, but couldn't get more than a half dozen seconds advantage on the pack. It came to a bunch sprint and that was won by Nacer Bouhanni.

Obviously not the best race for you, but some things to learn from this, like if you want you to win Tour you can't ride Giro before. Or if you ride Giro, ride Vuelta

After the Giro win, I'm not that disappointed although it was weird how poor I was in the second week but so much stronger than the others on Tourmalet! Maybe it wasn't the best idea to have both me and Barguil aim for the GC. Good result for him though.

Oh well. I'm just wondering... do you now have to change to title to "one in 18 million"? Smile

Nope. Only the passport has changed Wink

The passport has changed but the story is true, the first GT Winner out off a billion will soon try to be the first Tour winner out of the billion (and a half by now?).

Lefevre looks to go British!
-A La Gazzetta dello Sport Report
A couple of months ago, we reported that the team managed by Patrick Lefevre would no longer be sponsored by Duvel. In a surprising turn of events, the team announced last evening, in a short press conference, with a limited number of attendees, that their project is moving out of Belgium for the first time in its existence.

Bonsucro, an international not for-profit, multi-stakeholder organization to promote sustainable sugar cane is the new sponsor for the cycling team which won its first Grand Tour earlier this year at the Giro. With the change in nationality, and focus, the management hinted at a change in direction towards rider recruitment and targets. Giro winner Sinha has a contract with the team for the next season but it remains to be seen what happens to the contract situation of other riders with this new development. A rumour about Tom Dumoulin not willing to continue riding for this team has been dong the rounds for the past couple of weeks. There is no concrete word on the situation from the rider's camp yet.

Although the sponsor is a British based organisation, it has a presence worldwide and the management has been encouraged to expand their horizons and bring in riders from across the globe. We tried to get statements from the riders about this announcement but the only answer we got was that they were happy that a quick resolution has been made.

September

I had a long break after the Tour with the whole of August dedicated to the training for my first appearance at the World Championships and the season ending Classics. I was representing my adopted country as the National Road Race champion and wanted to show that I was worthy of that title.

World Championships - Individual Time Trial

Incredibly, with a move beyond any explanation and my belief, Dumoulin was not starting the Time Trial for Netherlands! Neither me nor any of my teammates started among the favourites as a packed field came out to play.

I started off well, clocking the fastest time at the first intermediate split. That's as good as it got as I was down to 4th and 22 off the best at the second time-check. I finished 58 seconds slower than the best time at the finish. I ran out of energy in the final section. When everyone had completed their runs, I was a lowly 28th, more than two minutes slower than winner Taylor Phinney. Dylan Van Baarle was the best performer for us, finishing 13th.

World Championships - Road Race

Bosvelt was mentioned among the favourites for today's stage given it's hilly profile. Three separate groups of breakaways were brought back by the peloton before Felline was allowed to stay away solo. He built up an eight minute lead with the liberty provided. Poland, Spain, France and Bouwman for us did the chasing. With 50 km to go, Felline's lead was down to a single minute. Poland had gone back in the pack while Colombia and Switzerland were now helping with the chase. Felline was caught with 40 km to go. France and USA did the pace-making for the next 10 km. There was no attacks in the group at all. Spain and Colombia had control at the front when the pack entered the final 10 kilometers. Colombia were soon replaced by France when the pace picked up. I couldn't hang on to the decisive group in the final kilometers. Sam Oomen finished the highest for us, in 8th place. Ania's 3rd place was the best result for Duvel. Alaphilippe is the new World Champion.

October

After a disappointing World Championships, it was time to prepare for the last Monument of the year, Il Lombardia. Just one prep race for me this year, and it was the popular Milano - Torino.

Milano - Torino

i.imgur.com/GPPXZ0S.png

I was not the leader of the team for this race but was given a free role. Bosvelt took on that responsibility. I was among the favourites for the win here though. The early two man break pulled out to a six minute lead. They were slowly reeled back and were finally caught with 20 km to go, on the first climb. I was among five riders that attacked soon after. I had Barguil for company, which gave us a numerical advantage. The others in the group were Aru, meintjes and Alaphilippe. Our numbers advantage came to nothing as both of us were dropped! We were caught by the 50 man strong peloton with 9 km to go. The others were also caught a couple killometers later. Aru and Meintjes attacked again with 3 km left. This time, they were not pulled back. We chased with all our might but Aru beat Meintjes at the finish. I settled for 12th. Bosvelt was our best at 10th.

Il Lombardia

As has become customary, I finish my season in Italy, riding on the hallowed roads of this race. The memories of winning here four years ago already seem to be fading as I've not been able come close to a win since. I was hoping for turnaround this time. Having won in the Giro earlier, a good result here would be the icing on the cake.

i.imgur.com/8tIX5N1.png

I was once again in a free role with Ania the team leader. I wasn't even among the favourites this time around. The break of the day consisted of two riders and they were allowed to get a five minute's lead on the pack. A few riders were dropped on the first climb itself. The peloton was down to just 20 riders on the second climb but it swelled back up to 70 riders before the third. The break had a 90 seconds' lead at this point. One rider from the break was caught on the third climb. The other was caught after the descent, with 20 km to go. I attacked with 12 km to go, along with three others - Duteil, Oomen and Sergio Henao. Again, I couldn't hang on to the front. Me and Henao were caught by the peloton at the top of the final climb. Duteil had distanced Oomen at the top. The latter was caught with 7 km to go. Duteil's lead was 30". The lead came down to 15 seconds with 3.5 km to go. However, it didn't come any further. He held on to win Il Lombardia! I finished in the pack, in a familiar 17th place.

You did win the Giro and the NC, so it was a good season. Seems quite realistic that the rest of the season was a bit of a wash.

As Croatia said slower finish to the season but nice to see no tiredness meltdown for you. As for the sponsor news: *insert weak joke about british raj*
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

@Ripley: It was a good season for sure, just a little inconsistent compared to the past two seasons. Probably the season planning had something to do with it.

@Croatia: Doesn't help when the AI chases down my attacks at any cost while everyone else is allowed to get away Rolling Eyes

@Jandal: There was tiredness in the Tour for sure but thankfully I recovered in the later part of the season. Couldn't put it to use unfortunately. And the sponsor news isn't ideal but contracts and such...

@Aquarius: Just a few paces short in the final few races. Maybe lost my motivation too after the Giro. Hopefully it doesn't happen next year.

Tamijo
Ya fine season all in all, hope you can still improve a little, and might get another great win next season
