Tour of Britain
15th-22nd September 2013

www.cyclo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/tour_of_britain_2013.jpg

One of the team's big goals has arrived - the Tour of Britain. It is the final race for many before the World Championship next week, and in the past, seen as a less strenuous preparation to the Vuelta a Espana.

With a route consisting of hills, time trials and flat sprint stages, it is set to be an exciting Tour of Britain. Adam Yates leads the team on home soil, where he will be supported by Simon Richardson, Henri St-Pierre and Tom Southam.

Caleb Ewan is the main man for the sprints, and his lead out is strengthened by Philip Lavery, Simon Yates and Rasmus Quaade.

Peebles-Drumlanrig Castle -- 199.8km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0002_zpsf8ed96fc.jpg

Stage 1 of the race, and it is one that could go either way at the finish. On paper, you would say that it has 'Sprinter' written all over it, but the rise within the last 1km to the line could favour more of a Puncheur finisher.

The team will work for Caleb, but will hold a 'Plan B' in the form of Simon Yates, as the finish may favour him more than our Aussie Sprinter.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zps60fe817d.jpg

After a quiet start, Richardson was the first to attack off the front. Amazingly, no one decided to go with him as the KoM sprint approached.

KoM Sprint (cat. 3) -- 25.5km
1. S. Richardson // 2. R. Martias // 3. J. Venter

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0005_zps0bb3a678.jpg

The peleton was going at full speed to bring back Simon. Someone clearly thought he was too dangerous to off the front.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0006_zps7ba36bfb.jpg

As Simon was caught and the peleton relaxed, Henri attacked. We were wanting to have someone in the break and take the pressure off Caleb.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0008_zps230adffd.jpg

MTN and Bontranger took the control of the peleton, as St-Pierre was allowed to go off the front and gain a good gap.

Intermediate Sprint -- 61km
1. H. St-Pierre // 2. C. Ewan // 3. J. Venter

Intermediate Sprint -- 174.3km
1. H. St-Pierre // 2. C. Ewan // 3. J. Paiani

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0014_zps1bf390ed.jpg

Henri was caught with 13km to go, and the stage looked set for a bunch sprint. Time to put the plan into action. Quaade-Lavery-Ewan was our main train, whilst Yates took the wheel of Sbaragli (MTN).

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0015_zps1b424e65.jpg

Quaade was excellent in the lead out, dropping Lavery and Caleb in the perfect spot. Only Stuyven (BLS) looked like he could stay with the pair.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0016_zps02784d11.jpg

VICTORY TO EWAN!! What a sprint from the Aussie. He left the rest in his wake. Lavery holds on for third to make it a great day for the team.

Kreuziger with a perfect Vuelta, taking the lead on stage 4 and keeping it till the end.

Perfect start of the ToB. Great result for the team with 1st, 3rd and 7th.

Startlist is a lot weaker than the races in Italy. Wink

AndyFan
Awesome start to ToB, Ewan very strong. Lavery good result as well. Rapha - Bianchi has hold of all classifications at the moment. I think the sponsors will ben pretty happy.

What I was curious about is the growth of the riders. Have some riders already grown in some important stats, like Yates, Villella and Ewan with their potential?

the_hoyle
@mvh: he was untouchable! When Martin made up time it was only 30". When he took the time back, it was over 1'00. I was so happy with the result. A weaker start list, so Top 5 on GC should be achievable.

@andy: Growth is set as 0.3, so it is slow, but yes there have been some changes. A. Yates is now 72MO/72HI, S. Yates is 71HI and Villella is up to 74HI. Others in the team have seen stats increases. Owain Doull is now 72SP/70ACC for example

Carlisle-Kendal -- 215.8km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0014_zpsf628bd77.jpg

After a great start to the race, we head into Stage 2 with high hopes. The hilly profile will eliminate our sprint team, but this is where Adam will step forward.

Caleb will enjoy his day in Yellow, safe in the knowledge that he will still have the Points Jersey, regardless of the result.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0001_zps568aa2dc.jpg

After what seemed an age (24kms!), the day's break finally formed. Simon had his card marked from the off, so was unable to add to his KoM lead. Instead, it was down to Tom to do the job in hand instead.

Intermediate Sprint -- 57km
1. T. Southam // 2. J.P. McCarty // 3. R. Hampton

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0004_zps52a3cfd5.jpg

The weather took a turn for the worse as the break headed towards the Lake District and the KoM sprint. Their lead was out to over 9 minutes.

KoM Sprint (Cat. 3) -- 116km
1. T. Southam // 2. R. Hampton // 3. J.P. McCarty

Sojasun and ChristinaWatches controlled the peleton through the descent, as the gap began to fall.

KoM Sprint (Cat. 3) -- 197km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0010_zps699628cf.jpg

Over the top of the final climb, the GC favourites attacked. Tiernan-Locke (SKY) was first to go, with Cardoso (CJR), Frapporti (AND) and A. Yates chasing behind.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0011_zps0bc94401.jpg

Approaching the finish in Kendal, Tiernan-Locke, Frapporti and Cardoso were preparing to consist the sprint. Adam was chasing hard behind, but it was looking strong.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0012_zpse1c0035d.jpg

Victory goes to Cardoso, as he holds off Tiernan-Locke on the line. Frapporti fades but finishes 3rd, with Yates in 4th.

Knowsley-Knowsley (ITT) -- 16.1km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0015_zpsb18ef68c.jpg

Stage 3 is a short ITT around the Merseyside suburb of Knowsley. Whilst it is not long enough to really cause any issues to the GC men, it will most certainly put a cat amongst the pigeons.

Rasmus will be our main focus for a good stage result, whilst Adam will be looking at making sure he does not lose time to his rivals.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0017_zpsf22df86b.jpg

Chris Baldwin (BPC) was the first real TT rider on the course, and he would be the one who sets the benchmark time -- 22'14

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0020_zps64ed6c15.jpg

Olympic Track Gold Medallist Ed Clancy (RCJ) was the next big name to hit the course, bettering Baldwin's time by 19" -- 21'54

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0022_zps3c498726.jpg

Rasmus was our big hope for a Top 10 result, and he was looking good out on the course. Fading at the end, he would finish just slower than Clancy -- 22'05

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0024_zpsf28d7f4b.jpg

Tom Zirbel (OPM) was an outside chance for the victory, and it was clear he was on some good form. He caught his own teammate on the line, but it was still slower than Clancy -- 22'01

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0028_zps5aec6530.jpg

As one of 2 Sky riders who could shake up the GC, Ian Stannard hit the route. He rode a good ITT, finishing 10" down on Clancy -- 22'04

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0030_zpsffb4ab37.jpg

Clancy's time looked to stand the test of time... That was until Kiryienka (SKY) hit the route. The Belorussian was in the zone, and smashed the time of the RaphaCondor man, taking the win in the process -- 21'21

Not a great TT from Adam, will be a challenge to keep that GC top 5.

Good TT from Rasmus.

The race is now looking a lot tougher than it did after stage 1 Frown

the_hoyle
@voets: Top 5 is the goal at the end Smile I think Sky will favour Tiernan Locke, so Kiryienka could be vulnerable to attacks Smile

@mvh: There is no more TT stages left, and he only lost a handful seconds to those around him. Kiryienka was the big gainer in the TT, but as I think Sky will work for JTL

@sutty: You didn't think we could keep it for every stage did you? Still leading in many of the Classifications Wink

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. I'm back at work after my illness, and a busy weekend ahead is planned. I want to get the season finished asap, so the next group of updates could be short and quick. ToB will be slightly longer, but the WC will focus more on the RR. The final 4 races will be simple reports and then the new season can start Smile Big things are on their way for the team

Stoke on Trent-Llanberis -- 190.7km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0008_zpsb1e3bd8a.jpg

The first stage after the ITT, and it is the first of three difficult stages for the peleton. The route from Stoke-on-Trent to Llanberis is an undulating route from start to finish, and has a very tricky climb over Snowdon with 6km to go to the finish.

All the attention will be on Adam, as he looks to hold onto his Top 5 place.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0001_zps57fd49a1.jpg

A group of 4 riders went off the front of the peleton just before the first Intermediate Sprint, working well on the stage, as they built a lead of over 7 minutes.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zps1de5f32e.jpg

Over the top of the climb of Snowdon, the break was still off the front. It would be clear that they would contest the win, but behind the GC was at stake.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0004_zps4c115527.jpg

Martin Reimer (MTN) took the win, ahead of Carlos Quintero (COL) and Russell Downing (TNE). Adam finished with the group of GC rivals in 9th.

Machynlleth-Caerphilly -- 178.0km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0009_zps6d6802bf.jpg

Stage 5 and another one where the GC could be shaken up if a rider is not alert to attacks.

Again, Adam takes presidence, with the two climbs of Caerphilly Mountain the likely spot where all the action might take place.

Race Report

Typical British weather in South Wales, as a group of 4 again attacked at the start of the stage. Tom Southam was in a group behind, with Zandio (SKY) for company.

As with yesterday's stage, the action was seen on the last climbs of the day. The group of GC men attacked on Caerphilly Mountain. Adam was slow off the mark, and chased on as they approached the final climb.

Daniele Aldegheri (CWO) takes the win, escaping from his breakaway men, and holding off the GC men. Jonathan Hivert (SOJ) takes second, with Schumacher (CWO) taking third. Adam would finish 11th, same time as the group, but loses his Top 5 to Schumacher on bonus seconds.

Sidmouth-Haytor -- 137.6km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0010_zps9c08baa8.jpg

Three stages left, and this could be the final chance to make any ways in the GC. Adam dropped to 6th after Schumacher's bonus seconds in Caerphilly, so we need to go on the offensive. He will be looked after all stage, and then see what he can do when it comes to the crunch at the end.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0001_zpsa09a6cb1.jpg

Yet again, it was a group of 4 riders up the road, with Costa (OFM) and Diaz (5HR) set to battle out for the KoM jersey.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0002_zps444dba06.jpg

As the peleton rode towards the finish in Haytor, the attacks began to happen. Hivert (SOJ) was first, followed by Cardoso (CJR) and then Yates. Amazingly, only Kiryienka (SKY) of the GC rivals tried to bridge the gap, as the time between Yates and the rest opened up.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zpsf3eb2ca3.jpg

Chinese National Champion Xu (CSS) held on for the win, for the biggest victory of his career so far. Petrov (TST) and Northey (NGR) completed the podium. Yates came home 9th on the stage, but over a minute ahead of some of his rivals...
