Garmin - 4th season Giro d`Italia
roturn
Thanks all for commenting. I am really happy with the result as the start list is really tough.
@MitchNL: Unlikely I think. Time trialists like Wiggins, Evans, Brajkovic or Monfort are not far behind and should gain time on the last stage. Top10 would already be huge for Kessiakoff. He jsut had two +5 days in a row. Wink

Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 4
Murgia Zuia - Eibar
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_1.jpg
Maybe the hardest stage of this years Pais Vasco Tour. Several steep hills in the last third and a really tough one in the end with a short descent behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_2.jpg
Some decent puncheurs in the break of the day but none of them a danger in the overall.
Eros Capecchi (Liquigas), Gadret (AG2R), Trofimov (Katusha), Herrada (Caja Rural), Nieve (Euskaltel)...

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_3.jpg
Astana is full in control over the peloton. They don`t really are afraid of the group, so they at least keep the peloton together.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_4.jpg
Capecchi seems to be strongest as he is doing most work on the uphill sections.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_5.jpg
Realizing that Kessiakoff would need some time on some favourites behind him and his great form in the last days, we decide to send 2 riders to the front working for their leader.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_6.jpg
But pretty quick it`s just Astana again as they are doing serious now. 4th overall Frank Schleck himself is doing the pace together with Peter Velits, who is also one of the best puncheurs in the field.
Lots of riders falling back now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_7.jpg
Team attack by Astana. Their 3 leaders plus Zeits break free with other favourites like Brajkovic, Kreuziger, Cobo.
Behind Roche is working hard to bring Kessiakoff back into this group as also Rujano and Sanchez with riders like Evans or Wiggins being behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_8.jpg
Over the top lots of small groups. Kessiakoff still in the 2nd group but with a hard working Roche he might come back on the descent.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_9.jpg
It`s Monfort and Kessiakoff now doing most work to come back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_10.jpg
And some time later they are really coming back pulling Roy with them.
Nice effort by the duo although this was pretty energy spending.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_11.jpg
The next group around Evans, Anton and Roche. Can they come back as well?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_12.jpg
The breakaway is down to five.
Capecchi, Herrada, Gadret, Trofimov and Nieve.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_13.jpg
Bad luck for Kessiakoff. More and more riders are coming back as Astana slowed down a bit.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_14.jpg
Igor Anton was obviously bluffing as he immediately attacks with 10km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_15.jpg
Coming to the last hill, Kessiakoff must pay tribute to his great effort earlier this stage and falls back with Lastras. Really bad luck for the Swede, who was one of the strongest in the last two stages.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_16.jpg
Capecchi got rid of all other riders and is focusing the stage win now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_17.jpg
Contador attacks and pulls Kreuziger, Braijkovic and Anton with him.
Also Evans gives his best to follow.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_18.jpg
Capecchi takes the stage. Well deserved today. Herrada comes in 2nd one minute later still 30s ahead of Trofimov and Gadret.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_19.jpg
Contador sprints on the 5th ahead of Kreuziger. These two will probably decide over the overall win.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_20.jpg
40s later Cobo brings in the next group with Evans, Brajkovic, Schleck and Anton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_4_21.jpg
Kessiakoff loses some time today and finishes as 18th together with his former team mate Danielson, who was part of the early breakaway.
Unfortunately Wiggins also overtook the Swede in the end. At least he gained time on Uran, Gerdemann, Lövkvist and others.

Also bad news for Murphy, who felt out of the time limit today. He won`t be able to start the last two stages.

Tough stage today, and a shame that Kessiakoff lost some time. But what an attack by Astana! It's difficult to keep the pace up with such an acceleration Smile

Oh damn it, Kessiakoff lost the top-10... Nevertheless the race he's doing so far is great, with this stage being the only negative point so far.

Agree with you two. Kessiakoff is performing better then expected with 2 awesome stages.
Astana was too strong, so problem for weaker teams.

Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 5
Eibar - Zalla
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_22.jpg
Maybe the easiest stage of this race. Some hills in the beginning and more and more flat in the end. A good stage for a breakaway as it`s hard to create gaps for the favourites.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_23.jpg
4 riders in the break of the day. Maybe the strongest puncheur here Garmin rider Roche, who is already some 13min behind.
But also the others are decent riders. Kroon (BMC), Lund (Leopard) and García (Caja Rural).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_24.jpg
Astana is doing just a tiny bit and not other team is willing to overtake the work. So the gap quickly goes over 10min.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_25.jpg
With 70km the gap is already 14min and Roche is in the virtual lead now. How much time can he gain today and where will he land in the ranking.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_29.jpg
40km and still 15'30 for the group. Kroon with the first attack for the stage win. Just Roche and Lund are in a really good overall position right now and just try to extend the gap as much as possible.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_30.jpg
Cadel Evans is the first of the favourites with a strong attack. Daniel Moreno attacks soon after.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_31.jpg
Later Frank Schleck attacks and Kreuziger follows. Weird move as Contador is in trouble now but with a long flat part now it`s hard to keep a gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_32.jpg
Mainly due to Roche`s work, Kroon is back in the peloton. He spend some energy but still with chances for a top 10 overall.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_33.jpg
Also the peloton is back together. The gap is melting, but will the gap be big enough for Roche?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_34.jpg
In the final sprint Lund proved to be strongest ahead of Garcia.
Roche, who spend a lot of energy during the chase doing most work finishes 3rd, while Kroon`s late attack cost him the stage podium.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_35.jpg
Late in the stage Contador attacks and Hoogerland, Martens and Schleck are following.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_5_36.jpg
10min later Martens sprints on the 5th ahead of Schleck and Contador but all are within the 36 rider peloton again including Kessiakoff.

Roche climbs on the 11th overall and just misses the top10 by a little bit with Lund being 14th now one behind Kessiakoff.
Tomorrow`s ITT will bring the overall winner.

Good stage from Roche....will be hard to get in in top10 after tomorrow´s stage but good luck.

Good stage. Roche up some paces and now might finish inside the best 15. Pity he had few energy left, because he could have won easily. Smile

Great result by Roche, will be difficult to make it into the Top 10, but at least Roche showed he is ready for the Ardennes.

Nice Pais Vasco so far, with Kessiakoff and Roche getting good results and being top 15 overall, good luck for the TT. Smile
I'll be back

Nice riding by Roche today, pity he just didn't have the legs for the sprint finishSad

Thanks all.
I decided to go for a high overall instead of the stage win. Unfortunately I still missed the top 10 so I might have gone all in for the stage perhaps. Wink
Still I am happy how this race worked out as I never really planned to finish high here.

Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 6
Zalla - Zalla
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_37.jpg
A final 24km time trial will decide over the overall win between Contador and Kreuziger with small advantages for the Spaniard.
Other stage favourites surely Wiggins, Brajkovic, Evans or Lövkvist.

Kessiakoff and Roche aren`t the best time trialists, but the hilly terrain here should suit them better than a completely flat one.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_38.jpg
Rosseler is one of the early time trial specialists.
But his time of 38'02 can`t be the maximum for sure.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_39.jpg
Ivan Gutierrez already beats his time easily setting a new best.
This time looks much more like a possible winning time.

Czech Frantisek Rabon had some nice successes in the last seasons and counts as one of the better time trialists. But he can`t beat Gutierrez on his home ground.

Lövkvist was behind expectations in the overall. But he sets a new best by 4s.

Kessiakoff is our biggest chance to enter the top10, although it will be hard against riders like Wiggins, Velits or Monfort.
But he has again one of his great days and although he is no known time trialist he sets a new best time. Fitness really is the key.
Awesome performance for the Swede, who is one of the most experienced in our team.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_43.jpg
Maybe the top favourite for today. Wiggins is still fighting for the top 10 and needs a huge time today. In the end he is just 2s ahead of Kessiakoff, what makes his time even better now.
36'31

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_44.jpg
Monfort can`t beat the duo and loses 20s on the Swede. Not enough to kick him out of the top 10.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_45.jpg
Brajkovic was very aggressive this week but without big luck as he never gained time on the other top riders. He also can`t beat the duo.
36'37

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_47.jpg
Cobo might have been one of the strongest here but won`t have a big chance here against the stronger time trialists.
Still he saves his overall podium today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_48.jpg
Kreuziger on the road and he is very quick. He beats Wiggins time by amazing 40s. Will this be enough to beat Contador? He just needs 10s to beat the Spaniard.
35'51

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/pais_6_49.jpg
The short answer is "no". The Spaniard is also fast and even beats the time by 1 tiny second and wins the 2013 Pais Vasco.
35'50

In general we must be happy with the 12th (Kessiakoff) and 13th (Roche). Both of them showed great performances. In the end it`S just 13 seconds to the top 10 thanks to his awesome ride today. Maybe some of the officials should have checked the time gaps on earlier stages more carefully... Wink

Now we are heading forwards to Paris Roubaix and the Ardennes.

Nice TT for KessiakoffWink

tsmoha
Ah, missing the Top-10 so close, is bad luck.. now we have to blame it on Igor Antón in stage 2, 3 (?) and this gap-closing there Wink But anyway, some very good stage-results and 12th, 13th in GC against such big names is also very nice!

baia
Damn...so close.
After this showdown by Kessiakoff,i must say that 12th is very good, althought imo he would have deserved better result.Smile

Very interesting race and very hard race to play with a lot of hills. It was up and down for Garmin throughout, but overall some nice results. So close to Top 10 with both your riders, but it was good performance.

Kreuziger did so well in your story! His TT stat must be better.

The race had a very tough field, so finishing just outside the Top 10 isn't all that bad.

MitchNL
Excellent TT by Kessiakoff, too bad you missed the Top 10 by just 13 seconds... at least you're above Urán, VDB, Gesink and Sammy Sanchez.

Great time trial by Kessiakoff, you were really close to the top-10. Still, 12th is decent. But I think he deserved a better placement. Maybe next time. Smile

Paris Roubaix or the "The Hell of the North" is one of the most famous bicycle races in the world and leads over more than 50km cobbles and about 250km in general. The first edition was in 1896 with the German winner Josef Fischer.
Most wins has the Belgian Roger De Vlaeminck with 4 wins between 1972 and 1977.
Fabian Cancellara, who won the race 2006, 2010 and 2012 can join him in this category as also Tom Boonen (2005, 2008, 2009).

Again Leopard-Trek won Paris Roubaix. Bobody was able to follow Cancellara`s attack, so he won solo ahead of a 4 rider group before Haussler won the sprint of the first bigger group for 6th. A pity that none of our riders had a good day.

Garmin squad 2013
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-team.jpg
Surely the strongest squad of all. With 4 potential winners we have a big tactical advantage. Still Cancellara and Boonen are in a league of their own and also Pozzato and Breschel are very strong in their combination of great cobbler and fast sprinter.
Maaskant will be or leader on the paper but he needs to attack for sure. Haussler could perform well in a sprint of a bigger group, while Vansummeren and Boom are our joker.
The other 4 riders will be there to support although they could all go for a top30.

*** Nuyens, Pozzato, Breschel
** Haussler, Devolder, Langeveld, Steegmans
* Van Avermaet, Vansummeren, Boom, Veelers, Eisel

Except of Gilbert all big names are participating plus strong wild card riders like Veelers. However the two big favourites keep the same. Cancellara vs. Boonen but maybe we see another winner like in 2011 when Breschel won solo as everybody was looking on the Suisse man to do something.

Paris - Roubaix
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-51.jpg
Welcome to one of our target races. With one of the best classic teams it`s not question that Paris - Roubaix is very important for our sponsor. So we sent our strongest possible squad here hoping for a great result.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-54.jpg
Sky, Leopard and Quickstep do the early pace. First are a bit surprising as their expected leader Flecha is injured and not participating.
Although we already reached the first cobbles no group was able to create a gap and so the peloton is riding together over the first section.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-55.jpg
And quickly the first splits. Luckily none of our riders and except of Gusev all favourites are in the first half.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-56.jpg
Still the 3 teams doing the work for the now smaller group including all 8 Garmin riders.
As there is no breakaway yet we relax in the group as we might need the energy later to beat the big two. And as long as the pace is not that high Haussler is one of the main favourites next to riders like Bennati maybe.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-58.jpg
And it`s still Sky leading through the Arenberg section. With Boasson Hagen, Bennati and Hayman they have 3 decent cobbler but none of them is expected to follow when the big cobbler start their race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-59.jpg
Due to the slow pace most of the splitted riders are able to come back and so the race starts again after one of the hardest sections normally.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-61.jpg
Soon Quickstep is coming to the front with 3 of their riders accelerating a lot. And for the first time of the day also Garmin is showing presence. Farrar and Phinney are working for their leader now.
Unfortunately Phinney is crashing soon after and so one of our worker for today is no longer able to support. Bad luck.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-62.jpg
Not much later the group is down to ~40 riders and now Van der Velde and Felline are doing the pace. This is much more exhausting now as these two are already outside favourites.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-63.jpg
Seeing that many riders have big problems it`s Van Der Velde, who feels very strong today. He accelerates another time hoping for more splits.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-64.jpg
With 20km to go the first attack. It`s the solo winner of 2011: Matti Breschel. The Dane is hoping for another coup. He changed teams and is leading his HTC squad now different to his win. So surely this attack will be taken much more serious this time.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-65.jpg
Langeveld and Chainel try to follow him. Both are really good cobbler but have no sprint skill at all, so their only chance is an attack.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-67.jpg
With 12km to go the next attacks. Easily Tom Boonen overtakes the 3 former attackers and he pulls several riders with him.
Cancellara, Pozzato, Devolder as also the Garmin duo Maaskant and Haussler.
Was this already a first deciding move? Vansummeren and Boom are in the 2nd group as also riders like Eisel, Van Avermaet, Steegmans, Nuyens or Vanmarcke.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-68.jpg
Top favourite Cancellara attacked the longest and created a gap. Haussler, who still felt great crossed the gap and joins the Swissman being the better sprinter now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-69.jpg
The other 7 riders around Boonen obviously gave up with 5km to go. None of them is trying to follow Haussler`s move.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-70.jpg
Haussler in the better position behind Cancellara. Will this be the first ever monument win for Garmin?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-71.jpg
Yes. Easily the Australian overtakes Spartacus and wins Paris - Roubaix 2012 with some bike lengths ahead. What a performance by him today. Just brilliant.
(Unfortunately some other riders were 1 lap behind and are in this picture...)

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_April/PR-72.jpg
In the sprint for the 3rd Boonen is the strongest. He beats Pozzato and Devolder. Chainel, Maaskant, Langeveld and Breschel follow.
Also a great 7th for Maaskant, who proved to be a solid top 10 cobbler although he still misses the big win.

Also Vansummeren (12.), Boom (17.), Van Der Felde (22.) all in the next group and Felline (26.) did a good job today finishing inside the top 30.
