Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era
dienblad
img257.imageshack.us/img257/6998/1logov.jpg

The Tour de Wallonie - Picarde, formerly known as Circuit Franco - Belge, is a 4 stage race in in the South of Belgium near the French border. The stages are a bit hilly, but mass sprints are predicted for all 4 of them.

Omega Pharma Adam Blythe won the Franco Belge in 2010, but, as usual this year, won't defend his win.

Our team:
img440.imageshack.us/img440/1069/3ploeg.jpg

Favourites:
*** Marcel Kittel, Kenny van Hummel (Skil), Leonardo Duque (Cofidis)
** Aidis Kruopis (Landbouwkrediet), Nico Eeckhout (An Post), Peter Sagan
* Kris Boeckmans (Topsport), Yauheni Hutarovich (FDJ), Russell Downing (Sky)

Our goal:
We want to go for a stage win and the top 3 in the GC. We will focus completely on the sprints, and don't send a rider in a break.

img37.imageshack.us/img37/9066/4etappe1.jpg

The 2st stage is from Templeuve to Mouscron and is with 205.5km the longest one. There are 2 KOTM-sprints half way the stage.
We see a 14-man BOTD, with the most known riders John Murphy (BMC), Wim de Vocht (Veranda's). They get caught 8 kilometres before the finish.
In the mass sprint, we try to bring Peter Sagan in a good position, but faill because he got blocked. It's Lithuanian Aidis Kruopis (Landbouwkrediet) who takes his first win of the season. Russell Downing (Sky) gets 2nd and Nico Eeckhout 3rd.

Stage 2 from Lessines to Poperinge is 166.7km long and completely flat. Again, 14 riders form a BOTD. Some of the riders in it are Kurt Asle Arvesen (Sky), Nico Sijmens (Cofidis), John Murphy again and Rob Goris (Veranda's). Goris is the last to be caught 6km before the finish. FDJ's Yauheni Hutarovych is the fastest sprinter today, beating Aidis Kruopis and Leonardo Duque (Cofidis). Marcel Kittel comes in in 8th.

I know that sprinting is my weak point in this game..... So I don't mind, the next races mostly have uphill finishes, or climbs shortly before the finish!

That sounds promising Smile Looking forward to your transfer announcements and the rest of the season. Do you participate in the Giro di Lombardia?

Yes, I participate in Lombardia! The transfer announcements come after the season. There are no more transfers for my team; Didier leaves for Orbea and besides the 5 stagaires, only Thomas Dekker will join our team next season.

ANd about those races.....Not the next one Sad

Our team:
img39.imageshack.us/img39/923/5ploegs.jpg

The favourites:
*** John Degenkolb (HTC), Marcel Kittel, Peter Sagan
** Tomasz Smolen (CCC), Stephan Radochla (Sparkassen), J. Jorgensen (Saxo)
* K. Szczawinski (Miche), S. Schumacher (Miche)

Our goal:
We want to bring Marcel Kittel the win in another race in his native country!

A group of 13 riders, a few names are Tomasz Smolen (CCC), Mads Christensen (Saxo), Laurent Beuret (Atlas), ride away before the Tecklenburg hills. We decide to keep them in range. After the hills, Laurent Didier jumps out of the peloton and joins the 13 leaders. With 40km to go, the lead is 2'40.
img404.imageshack.us/img404/6899/6botd.jpg

Thanks to hard work by the domestiques of HTC and Christina Watches, the lead is cut back to 1'06 with 10km to go.
img707.imageshack.us/img707/9991/720km.jpg

5 more kilometres and the leading group only have a lead of 36 seconds. Marcel Kittel has chosen the wheel of HTC's John Degenkolb.
img854.imageshack.us/img854/8848/85km.jpg

Suddenly, the pace drops dramatically in the peloton..... For ome reason, HTC stops doing the pace and blocks the road... Strange, very strange, but this one will be for the breakaway.
img853.imageshack.us/img853/2692/10peloton.jpg

Laurent Didier has some energy left and knows that the only way to win this race, is by an attack. There are better sprinters in this group, so with 3 kilometres to go, he gives it all.
img689.imageshack.us/img689/8906/93km.jpg

But it's not enough. He can't hold his speed and gets passed by the rest of the leading group. Atlas Personal's Laurent Beuret wins the sprint and takes the biggest win in his career. Tomasz Smolen (CCC) gets 2nd and Jimmi Sorensen (Glud) 3rd.
img832.imageshack.us/img832/6209/11finish.jpg

The peloton has started to sprint again, and Kittel wins it.

Word from the DS: We were ready for the sprint, and suddenly..... the peloton does a sur place. Strange, very strange (or should I say bug?). When Didier had waited for the sprint, he could have get a 5th or 7th place, so we tried this. A race to forget....

The 59th edition of the Gran Premio Citta di Peccioli, also knows as the Coppa Sabatini.
The 190km race is being held on exactly the smae route as the Memorial Marco Pantani (Rolling Eyes ), so with some short and steep climbs in it, including a 300 metres long wall with gradients up to 12%.
img233.imageshack.us/img233/3093/2route.jpg

The 2010-edition was won by Riccardo Ricco. And we all know why he won't defend his win (something to do with stupidity).

Our team:
img585.imageshack.us/img585/8609/4ploeg.jpg

The favourites:
*** Damiano Cunego (Lampre), Stafano Garzelli (Acqua et Sapone), Robert Gesink
** Pavel Brutt (Katusha), Peter Sagan, Stefan Schumacher (Miche)
* Leonardo Bertagnolli (Lampre), Xavier Florencio (Geox), Michael Rasmussen (Chirstina)

Our goal:
Top 3 with Gesink or Sagan.

Under beautiful sunny weather conditions, a group of 11 riders ride away after about 50 kilometres and take a maximum lead of 7'30. Some of the names: T. Nose (Adria), A. Bisolti (Farnese) and A. Losada (Katusha).
img560.imageshack.us/img560/1287/5botd.jpg

With 23 kilometres to go, and 2 laps, the gap is still 2'32.
img17.imageshack.us/img17/2885/623km.jpg

The peloton comes closer in the penultimate lap, so 3 riders decide to attack out of the leading group and continue with a higher pace. With still 12 kilometres remaining, Simone Campagnaro (D'Angelo), Guillaume Dessibourg (Atlas) and Anton Vorobyev (Itera) have a 23 second lead to their former breakaway companions and 1'50 to the peloton.
img854.imageshack.us/img854/9207/712km.jpg

The peloton, with Jelle Vanendert doing the pace, comes closer very quickly and with 4 kilometres to go, 29 riders will fight for the win.
img705.imageshack.us/img705/5072/84km.jpg

Our tactic is to wait as long as possible, because when you start the sprint too early with the steep last 600 metres, you will fade too soon before the finish. But we get surprised by a fierce attack by Geox Xavier Florencio 1500 metres before the finish.
img690.imageshack.us/img690/1951/9florencio.jpg

Because of Florencio's attack, we get surprised and when other riders try to follow Florencio, our riders get closed in. Coming on top of the last hill, Florencio feels that he started his attack too early, and gets passed by the Italians Stefano Garzelli and Damiano Cunego.
img252.imageshack.us/img252/1757/10300m.jpg

Garzelli holds Cunego off and sprints to the win. It's just the first win of the season for the 38-year-old. 8 seconds behind the 2, Florencio finishes in 3rd, while Robert Gesink comes in in 7th place.

Word from the DS: We did everything right, except the last 1500 metres. I don't know if Gesink could have followed Garzelli and Cunego, but a 3rd was possible.

Our team:
img231.imageshack.us/img231/5042/5ploeg.jpg

The favourites:
All the sprinters, so Kittel, Krupis, Van Hummel, Se. Hinault, Flahaut, Se Chavanel, Lemoine, Sulzberger, Hutarovych etcetera.

Our goal:
Top 3 (it's a sprint, so I'll probably mess it up).

11 riders attack right out of the start and form the BOTD. The 11 are unkown riders, so I don't bother giving you the names. They get a maximum lead of 5'30.
img703.imageshack.us/img703/6899/6botd.jpg

And as predicted, the BOTD gets caught, this time with about 10km to go. We make the pace of the peloton with our sprint train, but surprise our opponents! 5500 metres before the finish, Sep Vanmarcke attacks when he is in 2nd position. The others stop peddling and Vanmarcke creates a gap.
img683.imageshack.us/img683/4576/85500m.jpg

The other teams really are astonished, as none of them is capable of doing the pace. They all look at each other, so with 3 kilometres to go, Vanmarcke has taken a 45-second lead!
img805.imageshack.us/img805/694/940km.jpg

And after a stage win in the Tour de Wallonie, Sep Vanmarcke takes his 2nd win of the season!
img97.imageshack.us/img97/7421/10finish.jpg

The peloton has started the sprint and Marcel Kittel has chosen the wheel of Aidis Kruopis (Landbouwkrediet). The Lithuanian is in a great form, after winning the Tour de Wallonie - Picarde. The German easily outsprints Kruopis and '25 behind the winner, he gives the team a double!

Word from the DS:
Now this was a great tactical ride. Vanmarcke was in a good daily form (+$) and the up-and-down last kilometres suited him. None of the other teams was capable of forming a train quickly. So this is really satisfying!

The 95th edittion of the Giro dell'Emilia, with the start in Cento and the finish after 192 kilometres in Bologna. The first part of the race is flat, than the riders face the climb of the Manzuno and after a long downhill 5 laps on a circuit in Bologna, with the finish on top of the San Luca. The San Luca is 1.5km long and has an average gradient of 10.1% with peaks to over 15%! Pretty comparable to the Mur de Huy.

The last 2 editions were won by Robert Gesink, who is eager to win three times in a row, something nobody has ever achieved in history. Record winner is Italian Costante Girardengo, who won 5 times in '18, '19, '21, '22 and '25.

** Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana), Cayetano Sarmiento (Acqua et Sapone), Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas)
* Stefan Schumacher (Miche), Domenico Pozzovivio (Colnago), Ivan Basso (Liquigas)

Our goal:
Gesink wants to win Emilia three times in a row, so that's our goal!

In the ascend of the Manzuno (5.8km at 6.2%), a 15-man breakaway is in front of the peloton. At the summit, the 15 have a gap of 5'52 to the peloton. In this group are Davide Rebellin (Miche), Dimitri Kozontchuk (Geox), Marco Frapporti (Colnago), Simone Masciarelli (Acqua et Sapone) and Francesco Bellotti (Liquigas).
img252.imageshack.us/img252/7645/680km.jpg

Then we see Peter Sagan sitting on the tarmac. One moment of not paying attention in the descend, and he crashed. He is able to get back on his bike again, and come back to the peloton, but has suffered that much that he got dropped out of the peloton in the first ascend of the San Luca.
img818.imageshack.us/img818/6555/7valsagan.jpg

In the first ascend of the San Luca, Rebellin, Frapporti and Bellotti drop the other 12 riders. With 37.5 kilometres to go, they have a 3'23 lead to the peloton.
img525.imageshack.us/img525/9402/838km.jpg

2 ascend done, 3 to go. The 3 are still up front and hav eto defend a 2'30 lead in the following 28 kilometres.
img198.imageshack.us/img198/5912/928km.jpg

In the 3rd ascend Bellotti attacks. Rebellin follows him, but Frapporti gets dropped. The 2 Italians haven't lost anything in this lap. 19km to go.
img803.imageshack.us/img803/634/1019km.jpg

Our plan was to wait with an attack untill the summit of the penultimate climb. But already on the beginning of that climb, it's Cayetano Sarmiento (Acqua et Sapone) who attacks, followed by Damiano Cunego. That's a little bit too much for Robert Gesink, who continues the climb in his own pace.
img46.imageshack.us/img46/9075/1110km.jpg

Damiano Cunego also drops Sarmiento and in the descend he joins Bellotti and Rebellin. With 8 kilometres to go, the 3 have a gap of '36 to Gesink and the Acqua duo Sarmiento and Stefano Garzelli.
img10.imageshack.us/img10/8079/128km.jpg

But can't close the gap to the leaders, were Cunego does all the work. They start the last ascend of the San Luca and Cunego immediately drops Bellotti and Rebellin. Gesink is in 4th place at '38.
img97.imageshack.us/img97/637/131500m.jpg

Gesink passes Bellotti and Rebellin in the last climb, but Il Piccolo Principe is out of ranch. Cunego takes his 6th win of the season (the Amstel Gold Race and 4 stages in La Vuelta) and prevents Gesink from becoming a Giro dell'Emilia-legend!
Stefano Garzelli wins the sprint for the 3rd place at 1'21, beating his teammate Sarmiento.

Word from the DS:
Cungo was to strong today. You can say afterwards, that Gesink had to counter his attack, but he couldn't at that moment and the Acqua et Sapone-boys couldn't help him. Too bad, because his form is very good at the moment!

tsmoha
Too bad Cunego seems to be in a similar good shape like Gesink.. but a 2nd is always nice.. as well as a 1-2-double in Paris-Bourges Smile

YvesStevens
Nice try you still have a good 2nd place Smile

Back to France for Paris - Tours, the last Northern Europe classic this season. It's an almost flat stage, with some small climbs in the last part near the river Loire. The wins often plays a big factor, with the forming of echelons.
img854.imageshack.us/img854/1998/2profiel.jpg

Like often before, the 2010 edition ended in a mass sprint, with Rabobank's Oscar Freire taking the win.

Our team:
img593.imageshack.us/img593/8609/4ploeg.jpg

The favourites:
*** Matti Breschel (Rabobank), Samuel Dumoulin(Cofidis), Aitor Galdos (Caja Rural)
** Marcel Kittel, Daryl Impey (NetAPP), Tom Veelers (Skil)
* Cyril Lemoine (AG2R), Kenny Dehaes (Omega Pharma), Dominique Rollin (FDJ)

Our goal:
We aim for a top 5 position. That will be difficult, looking at the form of our sprinters. All are under 80.

12 riders feel the urge not to stay in the peloton and have an easy first part of Paris - Tours. They get a maximum lead of 7'30. The names: T. Skujins (La Pomme), C. Ji (Skil), R. Hardy (Bretagne), J. Bérard (AG2R), E. Baumann (NetAPP), C. Wurf (Liquigas), C. Bessy (Saur), J. Thiré (Big Mat), B. Janiaczyk (CCC), L. Laverde (Colombia) and R. Martínez (Caja Rural).
img585.imageshack.us/img585/1287/5botd.jpg

With 36 kilometres to go, the lead has been cut back to 1'50. Then Rabobank's Lars Boom attacks and is surprisingly jined by Daryl Impey (Team NetAPP). Why won't he wait for the sprint?
img511.imageshack.us/img511/2096/637km.jpg

Boom and Impey get caught by the chasing peloton, and than it's time for another Rabobank cyclist to attack. It's the big favourite for this race, Matti Breschel! Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) recognizes the danger and counterattacks. There are 25 kilometres to go and the BOTD is 1'40 ahead.
img220.imageshack.us/img220/6543/725km.jpg

The final has started:
img573.imageshack.us/img573/6336/laatste10km.jpg

Breschel and Dumoulin have joined the BOTD, when on the Cote de Beau Soleil Big Mat's Jonathan Thiré attacks. Of course Breschel and Dumoulin follow. The 3 create a '38-gap to the peloton with 11km to go.
img85.imageshack.us/img85/2509/811km.jpg

3 kilometres later in the race waits the last climb of the day, the Cote de l'Épan. Breschel uses the ascend to drop his companions. At the summit, 8km to go, he has a gap of '16 to Dumoulin and '33 to the peloton.
img819.imageshack.us/img819/1381/98km.jpg

It is difficult for the peloton to organize a good chase, so with 3 kilometres to go, Breschel is still in the lead with 24 seconds.
img820.imageshack.us/img820/1170/103km.jpg

The Danish rider has time for an early celebration and takes his 3rd win of the year (stage and GC in 5 jours de Dunkerque). Aitor Galdos (Caja Rural) sprints to the 2nd place, with Tom Veelers (Skil) in 3rd. Marcel Kittel finishes in 5th place.

Word from the DS:
We are satisfied with the result, as the Top 5 was our team goal. It was an impressive win by Breschel, we didn't thought that he could hold it untill the finish.
