@mvh: It has been edited to say RaphaCondor-JTL instead now... I read it and got confused myself Wink Yates was on a good daily form, and in hindsight should have worked for him instead of Bellis. Sprint starts are now every similar between the two

PostDanmark Rundt
Hillerød-Frederiksberg -- 166.7km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0027_zps0ffbafb7.jpg

The final stage of the PostDanmark Rundt, and our final chance to get that stage win that we are craving so much.

With no KoM sprints on the stage, Fredrik can have a nice easy day in the sadlle and savour his moment in the jersey. Rene will be the man for the sprints again, but the plan is head for the breakaway and remove the pressure of the chase from the rest of the team.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0013_zps8c8977a1.jpg

Pardilla (MTN) and Murevyev (AST) attacked from the start of the stage, with Doull and Slagter (BEL) in chase behind.

Orica took the control of the peleton, as they protected the Overall GC lead of Impey. The break was working well and a 4 minute gap quickly opened up.

Intermediate Sprint -- 53km
1. S. Pardilla // T. Slagter // 3. O. Doull

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0021_zps0e7e10d0.jpg

Disaster for AG2R! Lead out man Belletti hits the deck, and none of this teammates come back to help him. After a long chase, the Italian is back in the peleton, but how would the fall affect him.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0023_zps3c5392b1.jpg

Orica continued to push the pace on the front, and soon the gap was tumbling.

Intermediate Sprint -- 123km
1. O. Doull // T. Slagter // 3. S. Pardilla

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0024_zps29bae6f1.jpg

The break was pulled back with 23km to go, and it was clear that the stage was going to end in a mass sprint again.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0025_zps926effe8.jpg

In the battle of the lead outs, it as Orica vs Rapha-Bianchi again...

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0026_zps25f0fba5.jpg

Impey is unstoppable! The South African takes another stage win, and confirms he is worthy of the Overall Victory. Matti Breschel (TST) comes home second, with Rene finishing strong to complete the podium.

Hoyle: The squad is now complete

Rapha-Bianchi Racing Team today announced their final signings for the 2014 season, with Luke Rowe and Nelson Oliveira the men who complete the Anglo-Italian squad.

British sprinter Rowe will come into the team as a protected rider, but will be one of the squad's big fast men, along with Caleb Ewan and Sonny Colbrelli.

Portuguese rider Oliveira signs for Rapha-Bianchi as a teammate, where he will add to the team's lead out trains, as well as improving the squad's Time Trialling abilities.

Team Manager Phil Hoyle is delighted to finalise his team with the duo, and is excited for the forthcoming season, where big race invitations and promotion will no doubt be priority number 1.

Coppa Agostoni
21st August 2013

fotos.subefotos.com/51946d07553a21ee23401c6ccafeff50o.jpg

We end a quiet August calendar with 3 races in Italy, starting at the Coppa Agostoni. Classified as flat by the organisers, the mountainous final third of the race could be enough to cancel out the pure sprinters.

Given that, we still come to the race with a team tailored towards a bunch sprint. Rene will be the main man at the end, with Lavery and Owain offering lead out duties.

Damien Monier and Howson will work in the early parts of the lead out, whilst Rasmus will work as domestique early in the race.

Linus and Villella complete the squad and will ride in a free role as they build on their form ahead of September goals.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0002_zpsc334ba26.jpg

It was a group of 9 who managed to get away at the start of the stage. Linus was present, along with big names like Caruso (CAN), Wyss (IAM) and Brutt (KAT).

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zps8e70521d.jpg

Having missed the break, Saxo and BMC took control of the chase of the breakaway, allowing them a maximum of 6 minutes off the front.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0005_zps17c816b5.jpg

As they approached the mountainous section of the race, the gap was down to 3'22, as the break continued to work well together.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0006_zps1ebd8849.jpg

OmegaPharma joined Saxo at the front of the peleton, as the high pace began to cause some difficulty for many riders.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0008_zpsb033ec4c.jpg

The break was pulled back with 4km to go, and it was set for a bunch sprint, as we took control of the lead out.

OmegaPharma came from nowhere to take an excellent 1-2 on the line, as Trentino outsprinted Kwiatkowski for the win. Daniele Ratto just finished third ahead of a fast finishing Mandri.

VoetsT
Nice 1-2 for OPQS Smile
But your riders did a great job too Grin

mvhoogdalem
Nice 3rd for Ratto. Smile
A good 4th for Mandri and Lavery with a great performance.

Also a nice podium for Mandri in Denmark, but Impey was just way too strong there. Smile

Good signings for the future. Lets hope they develop into great riders.

the_hoyle
@voets: I thought you would be happy with that OPQS result Wink

@mvh: It was less than a wheel that got Ratto 3rd. Future Rapha-Bianchi man Colbrelli 7th as well Wink Mandri finally got a good sprint in, but yes, Impey was far too strong. Happy with the signings, and the 2014 squad

Tre Valli Varesine
23rd August 2013

ticker.live-radsport.ch/images/13082113700-vorschau-93-tre-valli-varesine.jpg

Our second Italian race at the end of the August, and small changes needed, as this prefers a puncheur style hilly rider.

Adam Yates and Davide Villella will lead the team, with Simon Richardson, Rene Mandri and Dan Lloyd working as domestiques to them.

Damien Howson and Trent Lowe will work as general team domestiques, whilst Henri St-Pierre will just ride to build up fitness ahead of the Tour de l'Avenir with Canada.

Race Review

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0013_zps326ccf21.jpg

Like at Coppa Agostoni, it was another large group that would attack from the off in Italy. Sadly, Rapha were unable to get a man in the break, as seemed to be asleep at the start. Even the smaller groups chasing the lead group were missed.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0015_zps549ea1c9.jpg

A number of teams took control of the peleton, as the break's lead extended to just over 8 minutes.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0024_zpscff8ec68.jpg

The break swelled to 12 riders as all the chase groups got together over the numerous climbs.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0026_zpsb6e53748.jpg

More teams joined in the chase of the larger breakaway group, and it was clear that it would be caught before the climb to the finish.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0028_zpsd4ecfe66.jpg

At the foot of the climb, the last members of the break were caught. Rodriguez (KAT) was the first to attack, with Nibali (AST) and Villella trying to bridge to him.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0030_zpsc3518dcc.jpg

Victory goes to Rodriguez, as the Spaniard soloes to the win. Nibali comes home second, with Carlos Betancur (ALM) outsprinting the bunch for third. Sadly, Davide lacked race fitness, finishing in the peleton in 18th.

World Championships Team GB Pre-Selection Announced

With only one month to the World Championships in Tuscany in Italy, Team GB have released details of their Pre-Selection for the Road Race and Time Trial.

With both Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins concentrating on the Time Trial rather than the Road Race, the pressure looks like it will fall to Peter Kennaugh to provide results.

Geraint Thomas and Ian Stannard are also present, along with many others who are expected to be named. However, Thomas has ruled himself out of the Time Trial to help as much in the Road Race.

The shock names come in the forms of Adam Yates, Simon Yates and Josh Edmondson.

Giro del Veneto
31st August 2013

www.pedaletricolore.it/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/02.12.2010-LOGO-GIRO-DEL-VENETO.jpg

The final race of August, and on paper it looks for a very boring day, with a finish made for the sprinters. Yes, there are the two climbs within the last 20km of the stage, but they do not look to difficult to the fast men of the peleton.

Rene will again be the man for the sprints, with Lavery, Howson and Quaade providing his lead out.

Ludvigsson will be given a free role during the race, whilst Dan Lloyd and Simon Richardson will work as domestiques.

Villella will complete the squad, adding miles to his legs, but he will try something on the short climbs to try and mix it up at the end.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0001_zps8d86978f.jpg

A group of 4 consisted of the break of the day, with Fredrik stretching his legs off the front of the peleton.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0004_zpsf225610d.jpg

Astana and Atlas took control of the peleton, on what was a very uneventful day in the saddle.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zpsbb31f5c3.jpg

Even the views of the local surroundings could not improve the entertainment of the race, as the peleton's lead peaked at 8'33".

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0005_zpsa605fadc.jpg

The break was caught after the descent of the first climb near the finish, and looked set to be a bunch sprint finish to the race.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0006_zps8e09824b.jpg

Despite Rene preparing his lead out train, Villella attacked over the crest of the final climb, and just had 5km of descending to take the win.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0008_zps1cd3a7b1.jpg

It was not to be for Villella as he is caught with 2km to go. Brambilla (ARH) takes the win, ahead of Bozic (AST) and Sabatini (CAN). Rene finished 9th, after being blocked during his sprint and losing his momentum.

Not the best results for the team, but not a shame due to lack of form. Smile

Not a surprise to see that the Yates brothers made the pre-selection. They got some great results this season.

August Review - WorldTour Results

www.topolinotech.com/success/asts/cyclingnews_logo.gif

August sees the transition between the end of the Tour de France and the start of the Vuelta a Espana on 25th August. As with the other Grand Tours, the Vuelta updates will be posted separately, but as always, I bring you the round up of the other WorldTour Races.

Tour de Pologne

www.theepochtimes.com/n2/images/stories/large/2012/05/20/AmadorWin144782441WEB.jpg

Andrey Amador (MOV) caused a shock in Poland, taking the win in the final ITT, ahead of the Colombian pair of Rigoberto Uran (SKY) and Carlos Betancur (ALM). Thor Hushovd (BMC) also strangely walked away with the KoM jersey, as the GC men dominated the Points classification.

The quality of his Time Trialling and Cobbles ability was enough for Fabian Cancellara to take the win at the Eneco Tour. The Swiss rider took the win ahead of Tom Boonen (OPQ) and Lars Boom (BEL). Andre Greipel (LTB) won the post-Tour battle with Marcel Kittel (ARG), whilst Taylor Phinney (BMC) showed he is a future winner with a final display to take the U25 classification.

A late attack from Ramon Sinkeldam (ARG) was enough to take the win in Germany, ahead fellow breakaway companion Lars Bak (LTB). Nacir Bouhanni (FDJ) took the bunch of the peleton to complete the podium.

@voets: The Villella attack was hoped to be like the one you can do at Tour Down Under on the corkscrew climb. But there is a big difference between January form and August form. It is a lot hard to pull off.

@mvh: The form for Mandri should be peaking, so I was hoping for me. He may ride in France before ToB, but I was hoping for better result in Veneto. The Worlds selection is wide open really! I selected the best riders based on stats and what they could do. I may have a look in fast editor at the fitness stats of the other riders for an idea on who to pick in final selection.

Wow, i have only been gone for a day and a hell of a lot has happened Wink, Mandri put in a good finish in Denmark, Villela rode well at the Tre Valli Varesine, Great signing in Luke Rowe, Mandri continued his good form at the Coppa Agostoni and Giro del Veneto and nice to see the team doing so well in the rankings Grin

Vuelta a Espana - Rest Day 1

3.bp.blogspot.com/-ui7wsSbu_2o/UgOTU1tlnTI/AAAAAAAACHI/OVk79-D6bm8/s1600/viva_la_vuelta.JPG

The final week of August saw the start of the third Grand Tour of the season - la Vuelta a Espana!

The 2013 edition is a Climber's dream, with 12 summit finishes long its route. The mountainous course, coupled with the high number of summit finishes, means that for the first time in a long time, the Overall GC winner could also walk away with the Points, KoM and Under 25 jerseys on their shoulders.

Here is how the racing has panned out so far...

Roman Kreuziger (TST) lead the GC on the first rest day, with Mikel Nieve (EUS) in Second, 2'37" behind the Czech Stage Racer. Early leader Dan Martin (GRS) is in Third 3'25 down on the Saxo-Tinkoff man.

The Mountainous start to the race means that Kreuziger leads the Points Classification, with Martin leading the way in the KoM standings. Tejay van Garderen (BMC) leads a closely fought Under 25 Classification, with Wilco Kelderman (BEL) just 51" behind him.
