Stage 5

The penultimate day, and it ought to be the final stage for the GC fight. The 20km TT is a there and back jobbie, and despite the moderately innocuous looking profile, don't be fooled, the slopes ramp up into to the very high teens in places, so this will be a very difficult 20km for anyone hoping to finish high!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/5-3.jpg

The early time was set by Omega's Bert De Clerq, he was no where near in the GC, but his time was good enough for a final 12th spot on the stage.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-83.jpg

His time stood until the first Exxon rider entered the frey. Steven Cozza prides himself against the clock, and despite some savage gradients, he recouped time on the descents to go 2" quicker, the first of many Exxon Riders to do well today.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-67.jpg

The last of the Exxon stream who joined the top 10, was George Hincapie, who knocked them all down to move into the provisional lead, waiting now for the last 8in the GC to set off.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-65.jpg

Geraint Thomas was the first of that group, and set a fast pace, he moved into the Exxon group, in provisional 3rd, now we had the last 5 to ride, who between them would be fighting for the overall classification victory.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-65.jpg

The first of the 5 was Heinrich Haussler, he finished just 3" behind Hincapie's time, but it looked unlikely that he'd done enough. Short of a sterling performance from the climbers currently at 1 & 2, the fight would be between Boassen-Hagen and Tom Danielson.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-69.jpg

Next in was Boassen-Hagen, once the two riders had been through the first split, Danielson held a 4" advantage over his team mate Zabriskie, and was 10" clear of Edvald B-H.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-71.jpg

Boassen-Hagen really sped up in the second half, and as he rolled over the line, he smashed George's time by over half a minute! The two riders at one and two were over 50" behind at C.1, so it all came down to how Danielson handled the second half of the course, as to whether or not he would take the lead.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-71.jpg

He couldn't beat Eddie on the day, crossing the line 10" slower than his opponent, however, he held a lead of 35" going into today, meaning that he takes the GC lead, 25" clear of the Norwegian Sky Man.

All in all, a good day for us, we have a huge range of powerful TTists in this team here in Oman, as we showed by taking 5 of the top 10 spots!

Hats off to Boassen-Hagen, he's ever growing as a rider, his climbing this year has improved a lot, and today he showed how powerful he is vs the clock!

Tomorrow we may get an opportunity to watch his sprinting, but tonight is all about celebrating Toms success, and making sure we finish the job off tomorrow on the relatively simple par cours.

Stage 6

The last day for us all here in Oman, and short of a major disaster we'll be keeping that top prize!

The day itself is broadly flat, finishing with loop after loop around a small circuit on the Omani coastline. Expect the sprinters here today, though the wind might play its part.

Todays breakaway was at most 12 in number, they had a hard job to get away, and were never given a chance, as we brought back the attacks, aided by Sky, Omega and Adria Mobil!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-66.jpg

The speed in the pack remained high, and due to this, the wind and tired legs at the end of a race, the inevitable occurred in the shape of a big crash, wiping out 45 riders at the back of the peloton with 7km to go. Beyer was involved, but he was our only guy in the smash, and has fortunately come away without a real injury.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-64.jpg

With many leadouts and team mates on the floor, the sprint was poorly organised, it seemed for a while as though a plucky late attack from Adria puncher, Mitja Mahoric might work out, but in the end, Cavendish showed the world that this season he is back, and taking a dominant stage win surrounded by men from the groups behind.

Sky put there faith in the British Sprinter after his torrid season last year, and it seems there faith was well placed, in 2 races this year he already has 4 stage wins and the GC in Qatar to his name!

A quiet day for us, exactly what we'd hoped for! Beyer will be fine following his crash, which is great news for the team. Danielson re-collects his leaders jersey, I'm sure he'll be back next year! Wink

Hincapie is raring to go now for the spring classics, he's got his heart set on some strong performances, we'll see you all again shortly for the Giro De Sardegna, see you then!

Great GC win in Oman!
Who will be the Sardegna leader? Hincapie?

baggieboys32
@Fernando - Hincapie won't be riding Sardegna as he is riding the Omloop Het which is the same day as Sardegnas last stage, the team will be led by Mr Vuelta Wink
