Good start...maybe some luck within but no matter....still some strong riders without time lost,so Florencio has to stay sharp...

Good start of the year, 10th with a non-sprinter!

That's why it's good to have your team at the front, and you mostly did. Nice managed Wink

Good start to the season. Florencio did well after that pile up to come 10th. Should do good GC with many riders out of contention. Good luck for the following stages !

@alexanderlens: Was indeed a hard crash. And the challenges will be very challenging Wink.

@sutty68. Thanks. Being at the front helped..

@baia. Well indeed luck played an important role but Florencio looks very strong.

@dienblad. Thanks! Florencio is not that bad at sprinting and was one of the better sprinters remaining in the front group.

@Alakagom: Thanks, staying at the front is a good way of avoiding crashes although it sometimes takes more energy.

Stage 2: Lobethal - Stirling 147.7 km

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under12.jpg

The second stage finishes, as usual, in Stirling. The uphill sprint is generally seen as one of the decisive places for the punchers to take some time on the sprinters. Florencio will try just that.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under13.jpg

11 riders in todays break of the day. Lequatre (Radioshack), Kristoff (BMC), Marycz (SaxoBank), Inglinsky (Astana), Rollin (Europcar), Wurf (Liquigas), Ventoso (Saur), Anza (Vacansoleil), Mondory (AG2R), Blythe (Omega Pharma) and Kostyuk (Lampre). No Geox rider as they will assist Florencio near the end.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under14.jpg

The first lap around the finish is the sign for Minguez (Euskaltel) and Bertolini (Androni) to attack. Together they try to close the gap to the escapees.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under15.jpg

Bertolini is 45" behind and Minguez 1'30" when the final ascent towards the finish starts. The pack, that saw no danger in the escapees as they all crashed yesterday, is more as 3' behind so the escapees will fight for the win.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under16.jpg

Inglisnky, normally the best puncher in the front group, immediately took the front when the sprint started. He can't slow down though as Ventoso and Bertolini, who just made the connection, are also known to have a good kick on a final uphill.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under17.jpg

Inglinsky could easily keep up and takes the win 20" in front of Mondory and Wurf. They all lost to much time yesterday to be any threat for the overal.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under18.jpg

Dekker (Garmin), racing his first race after his suspension, was the only favourite to attack on the final hill has a small gap to the others when passing the kite.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under19.jpg

The Dutchman could keep up and finishes 2' behind the winner. A strong Florencio and Breschel lead the pack over 13" later which means Dekker is the new leader.

Not a smart decision to send nobody in the break but most of our riders finished in the first group yesterday and would not be given any freedom. Florencio did very well coming in 4th of the favourites. This looks very promising.

FreitasPCM
Florencio doing very well so far... and the new jersey is even better than the original one!

Go Geox!
Go Thomas Dekker!
Guess who's back? Smile
Lets see how many friens are still around...

Spilak23
@FreitasPCM: Thanks but I made the shirt myself with Paint.NET so it really isn't that great when looking a bit closer.

@alexanderlens: It's nice to see Dekker immediately showing himself.

Stage 3: Unley - Victor Harbor 134.3 km

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under21.jpg

We don't have a sprinter for the flat stages so we will try to get in the break again. Florencio will also stay at the front to avoid any crashes.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under22.jpg

Corti made an attack to get in the break together with Thurau (Audi) and so he takes the KoM-points. Bertagnolli (Lampre) and Kiryienka (Movistar) can only sprint for 3rd and 4th.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under23.jpg

Corti is good positioned in the sprint-rankings but can only take 2nd and 3rd. Luckily, it's sufficient to take the points jersey.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under24.jpg

The four escapees of the day worked hard but with 10 kms to go, their adventure is over. Nice ride from Corti, Thurau (Audi), Grivko (Astana) and Laborie (Saur).

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under25.jpg

Kiryienka makes an unsuccesfull late attack on the small bump with 5 kms to go. Colli in the meanwhile brings Ratto and Florencio, who are both feeling very good, in a good position.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under26.jpg

World champion Boason Hagen takes the win in the sprint. Greipel received a good leadout from Roelandts but couldn't compete. Ratto and Florencio both sprint very strong and finish as 9th and 10th.

This stage exceeded all my expectations. Pre race, I would have been happy with one top 10 but 3 after 3 days is just great. Corti is also doing great and will try to keep the points jersey.

Nice riding today, Florencio still only 13s off the leadWink

tmobile
Well, the first thing of everything is to congratulate you on the new jersey of the team because its an authentic marvel!

And then to congratulate you (and I surprise) for the magnificent role that is having X. Florencio in this beginning of the STDU.

Do you believe that Spanish has options to last in the first positions until the end?

A lot of luck mate!

@All: Thanks! Grin and tmobile, glad you like the jersey but it's not that great Wink

Stage 4: Norwood- Tanunda 130.3 km

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under29.jpg

The 4th stage is rated as hilly but only one hill is situated in the last part. The peloton will probably be reduced to a smaller group on the hill but still big enough to see a decent sprint.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under30.jpg

Schär went into the break to protect Corti's points-jersey. Perez (Euskaltel), Lequatre (Radioshack), Van Huffel (Audi), Celli (Androni), Ravard (AG2R), Kascheckin (Lampre) and Wurf (Liquigas) are the 8 others.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under31.jpg

Kiryienka attacks from the pack around half way the stage. He lost some time in the big crash but has been very active since. He joins the escapees right before the hill with 20 km to go.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under32.jpg

Bertagnolli (Lampre) initiates an attack from the pack on the hill. Surprisingly, favourites like Lloyd (Lotto), Breschel (Rabobank), Chavanel (Omega Pharma) and Lovkvist (Sky) follow. Florencio is a bit too far behind but is coming to the front.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under33.jpg

At the front, Perez was the onlyone able to follow Kiryienka on the hill. The two are now riding in front but their advantage isn't very big.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under34.jpg

Lloyd attacks again from the pack. Dekker (Garmin), Boasson Hagen (GreenEdge), Bertagnolli follow. So does Florencio.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under35.jpg

Everything came back together though. Boasson Hagen initiated a new attack from that group, followed by Busche, Boonen, Bosisio, Lovkvist and Lloyd. Florencio didn't follow as he thaught Schär would be able to close the gap to him. Florencio then tries to close the gap alone.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under36.jpg

The front 6 sprinted for the win and Boonen took the win in front of Boasson Hagen and Bosisio. He is also the new leader.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/under37.jpg

Florencio finished very strong and closed the 30" gap in the last 5 kms. Unluckily for him, the next group, which came in 15" later, were also given the same time so the first 60 riders finished in the same time.

It looked bad with 5 km to go but a very strong Florencio closed the gap alone and is still in contention. Corti lost his points-jersey but will try to retake it tomorrow.

baia
Florencio is really doing great...maybe he can even get top3 or top5 at willunga...

Intense racing in Down Under Smile Florencio showed some class by catching up the other 6 and is looking better and better every stage. Though it will be hard to make any times on Willunga as the other 6 look strong, hope you can do something. Still 7th would amazing start for Geox Wink Corti is putting great fight, if everyting goes right tomorrow, he might have good lead before the last day. Good luck !

@baia: Thanks! I hope he can get top 5!

@Alakgom: Yeah, I really feared I had screwed up when Florencio missed the right group but he made a very strong move bringing everything together. Corti is doing good but needs two win the upcoming intermediates.

During the TdU, we are also participating in San Luis. But as I want to go a bit faster in the career, continental races will only be posted in one post. So here is a preview and the reports will follow later!

The Tour de San Luis is a one week long stage race in Argentina. One of the more exotic races on the calender, the race is becoming a popular replacement for Down Under. Nibali won two years ago and Costa last year.

4 stages will probably decide the overal. Two of them finish on a very steep and narrow hill. One has two hard climbs and finishes on a kick after a flat stroke while stage 4 is a 15 km long timetrial.

Cobo comes back after finishing 4th last year. We hope he can do better and he should certainly challenge for the top spot. Kump will get his chances in the sprint and Brändle will challenge for the win in the TT.

Good luck in Argentina. In Down Under, Florencio seems to have a nice chance at a top-10 with the final decisive stage coming. Smile

Thanks! Grin. The Willunga Hill should certainly suit Florencio.

Stage 1: San Luis - Justo Daract
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis1.jpg

San Luis starts with an easy day on large flat Argentinian roads. Kump will try to place him in a good result here.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis9.jpg

Two sprintteams formed strong sprinttrains. Skil (1T4i from the next stage) had Docker and Veelers leading out Van Hummel while Ongarato and Ginnanni were leading out Ferrari. Only Förster following the trains. Kump had no chance to get a good position.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis10.jpg

Van Hummel had no problems to finish of the teamwork and takes the last victory in the Skil-Shimano team jersey. Ferrari and Vaitkus took 2nd and 3rd.

Stage 2: La Punta - El Trapiche
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis2.jpg

The first real test for the GC-men. Only one hill but the finish is there so Cobo will have to be at the front.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis11-1.jpg

A strong break with Vicioso and Txurruka was caught early so Kump brought Cobo to the front it the start of the Miradar del Potro.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis12-1.jpg

Brutt made a strong attack at the foot nobody followed. He rode strong and took the stage win. Cobo stayed in the next group and finished strong. He reduced the gap from 1' to 45" in the last km. 2nd is still good.

Stage 3: Buena Esperanza - Villa Mercedes
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis3.jpg

Don't get fooled by the profile. The stage is completely flat. Another chance for the sprinters.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis13-1.jpg

1T4i again took the front in the sprint preparations. Veelers was leading out Van Hummel. Richeze (Saur) and Marcato (Acqua e Sapone) followed closely. Kump again had no chance for a good place whatsoever.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis14-1.jpg

Van Hummel could again throw his hands in the air. Two sprints and two wins. Marcato and Lacome complete the podium.

Stage 4: San Luis
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis4.jpg

The timetrial will play an important role in the GC. Cobo will need to ride good if he wants to stay in contention.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis15-1.jpg

Svein Tuft (SpiderTech) was the pre race favourite and took an expected win.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis16.jpg

Austrian champion Brändle was the only one challenging him and took a nice 2nd place. His teammate Cobo did way less and lost even more ground to Brutt.

Stage5: Capital del Marmol Onix - Merlo
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis17.jpg

The 5th stage looks much like the 2nd. Mainly flat untill a steep final climb. Cobo will try to follow Brutt who looks very strong.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis17.jpg

Duran joined the break. He was together with Jones (United) and Nardello (d'Angelo) when the first sudenly attacked. A stupid move as they had a good gap and could have survived alone.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis18.jpg

Brutt made another strong attack on the final climb closing the gap to Jones. Nieve was able to follow him this time while Cobo couldn't do better then following Marcato and Popovych.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis19.jpg

Race leader Brutt sprinted to a 2nd victory with Nieve in his wheel. Jones holds on for 3rd while Cobo comes in 6th, half a minute later.

Stage 6: La Huertita - La Carolina
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis6.jpg

With two hard climbs and a steep uphill two the finish, this certainly looks like the queen-stage. Cobo will try to attack to take back the 2nd place from Popovych.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis20.jpg

Cobo felt very strong and attacked right on the first slopes of the long climb. He immediately passed the escapees while it took a while for the other favourites to respond.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis21-1.jpg

Brutt, Popovych and Nieve joined Cobo right before the top. The Basque immediately attacked, going for the KoM-points. He created a gap and rode the flat part with 20" advantage over his chasers.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis22-1.jpg

Cobo made a strong sprint on the final kick and jumped from the 2nd group to the front. He came to late though and could only see Nieve raising his hands to celebrate. Good thing is that he retains his 2nd place overal.

Stage 7: San Luis - El Trapiche
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis7.jpg

The Tour de San Luis ends with a 3rd flat stage. Another mass sprint?

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis23-1.jpg

Yes. We brought back the escapees as Kump was feeling very strong. He hung in the wheel of Richeze behind the 1T4i-train for Van Hummel when the sprint started.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/sanluis24-1.jpg

Vaitkus used a strong Spidertech train for Lacombe to take the win. A great win for the Lithuanian champion and his small Differdange team. Van Hummel and Lacompe 2nd and 3rd.

2nd is a strong result for Cobo in our first race of the season. Brutt was very strong and out of reach. Kump was a bit disappointing in the sprint but he's still young.

Great result in Argentina...well done..but im surprised with Brutt the way he climbed...
