Unlucky with loosing contact, happens to me at times, but Fellaine did great job brining Maaskant back. Nice finish by Maaskant too, as well as the team performance was great. Good classic for you, mabne it could have been better with Haussler, but we shouldn't dwell on it

Good 4th place. Close one the podium, but a decent result, looking at the riders who finished above you.

Good luck for April, Maaskant was very good at G-W, pity that he had lost contact earlier.

Thanks all. The split was indeed bad for him. Otherwise he might have been able to follow Flecha or even Boonen for a podium. But I am still pretty happy with the outcome.
The Tour of Flanders is a Flanders Classics road cycling race held in Belgium every spring since 1913. It`s the second monument this season after Milano San Remo.
Record champs with 3 wins are Achiel Buysse, Fiorenzo Magni, Eric Leman, Johan Museeuw and Cancellara, who won the last 3 editions.
Also Stijn Devolder could join these riders as he won the 08/09 edition.
Result in 2012
1 | Fabian Cancellara | Leopard Trek | 2 | Vladimir Gusev | Team Katusha | 3 | Juan Antonio Flecha | Sky Professional Cycling Team | 4 | Stijn Devolder | Quick Step - Innergetic | 5 | Gert Steegmans | Team RadioShack | 6 | Heinrich Haussler | Garmin - Cervelo | 7 | Martijn Maaskant | Garmin - Cervelo | 8 | Johan Vansummeren | Garmin - Cervelo | 9 | Philippe Gilbert | Liquigas - Cannondale | 10 | Alessandro Ballan | Lampre-ISD |
It was a nice race for us last season with 3 riders in the top 10, but this year we at least want a top 5 or better the podium even if we just have one rider in the top 10 then.
Garmin squad in 2013
Maaskant as our best cobbler will lead us today. He might try to challenge the big two in Boonen and Cancellara. But also Haussler, Vansummeren and Boom are great riders as they all are better puncheurs. We might have a tactical advantage that no other team has in especially as also Van der Velde and Felline are expected to stay longer than most other helpers. Also Farrar and Phinney are decent cobblers and might be a big help for the first half.

4 favorites are in your team so you should be able to challenge boonen and cancellar, although their cobblestats might be better. Good luck!

Thanks both.
Ronde Van Vlaanderen
Brugge - Meerbeke
The route was changed a bit from last years edition as the Muur van Geraardsbergen won`t be ridden. This also means a longer flat part without any cobbles after the last hill. Still it`s a pure cobbler event and very similar to the old route.
The pace was pretty quick all the time, so no breakaway until the first pavement section.
Leopard (Cancelara) and Vacansoleil (Devolder) are leading the peloton. Luckily it`s pretty sunny which lowers the crash risk.
Some decent puncheurs attacked on this section. Pinot (FDJ) and Riblon (Ag2r) but also cobblers Rast (Shack) and Hayman (Sky).
Not far later some more attacks and this time it`s really dangerous. Team attack by HTC. And it`s no one else than last years Paris Roubaix winner Matti Breschel supported by Eisel. Also Amorison is in this first chase group as he realized a good opportunity here.
All 3 are allowed to go surprisingly. It might have something to do with a crash that forced Flecha to abandon. That`s pretty nasty news for Sky as he had a brilliant form and now will also miss Paris Roubaix probably.
Other crashes including Gusev went out a bit better for the rider.
The two leading groups come together but it`s still a long way to the finish. But if the peloton is not starting the pace soon this might be a nice surprise.
Farrar and Phinney have to do something as Leopard and Quickstep are still waiting. The gap is at 7min and mustn`t become bigger.
Luckily Leopard and Liquigas took over the control behind 40km later and now the pace is really high with several riders falling back.
On one of the hardest sections of the day the peloton is already down to a third with all favourites but Gusev being in there.
Lampre and Leopard are doing most work now with the group down to ~30. Still 8 Garmin riders in here. Great job by our riders so far.
Even after coming under 20 riders there are still 6 Garmin shirts with Farrar just falling back. Will this be the big day for us?
Several riders like Gilbert, Nuyens, Vanmarcke, Boasson Hagen or Van Avermaet slept for a moment and are in a later group. Will be hard to come back now.
The group is down to 10.
With Maaskant, Vansummeren, Haussler and Boom we have most riders here, so that Vansummeren and Boom are also doing some pace now.
Other than that it`s Pozzato, Cancellara, Boonen, Devolder, Langeveld and surprisingly also S.Scheirlinckx.
Garmin is doing a high pace now with Langeveld falling back making it only 9 riders left.
Then on the hilly section again it`s World Champion Stijn Devolder, who won here twice with a powerful attack overtaking the Breschel group and leading the race now.
Unfortunately it was just in this moment when the break was caught, so that the group slightly blocked some riders.
Cancellara counters with Boonen being just behind.
This makes it 4 Garmins and strong Scheirlinckx being behind these 3 hardly chasing.
Maaskant is the first starting an attack after being a bit blocked when the others attacked.
Similar situation than in Gent. A solo leader, this time Cancellara ahead of a duo (Boonen, Devolder) with several groups behind.
A pity that Maaskant was not strong enough to join the duo, who worked perfectly together.
Spartacus takes the win the fourth time in a row. Who else is supposed to win this classic in the next years then?
Devolder might have been the strongest today beating Boonen in a sprint. He just missed to follow Cancellara`s move.
Again a nice result for Maaskant, who again comes in 4th. We won`t know if this was really the maximum...
Also Vansummeren with a late attack created a gap and comes in solo on a good 5th.
Also the next two places are reserved by Garmin riders. Haussler and Boom win the sprint against Scheirlinckx and care for a great Garmin result although none of them is on the podium.
Langeveld sprints on the 9th ahead of Pozzato, who might have expected more.
Just 55 riders finished the race including all Garmin but Phinney, who missed the limit by just 3min. Worst race surely by Liquigas, who missed the deciding group with both leaders as also by Sky with the early abandon by Flecha. HTC pokered high today and lost all chances in the end but at least they tried something new to beat Spartacus.

Yep, fantastic result! Also a nice win for Cancellara.. but Garmin truly deserved a 3rd for that team-performance.. indeed great reports, like always, but the 10th and 11th (or 11th and 12th ..) screens are the same

Good result in GW and RvV, a pity you missed the podium on both, but every Top 10 place earns points for the rankings. Which are looking great for you, keep this up!

Thanks all. Like you say I am pretty happy with such an result as I often fail in RVV and especially Roubaix. Haven`t played this one yet.
Thanks Tsmoha. Happens quite often in the last time. 3-4 times in 1 month or so. Maybe I should go to the old system, then this normally can`t happen. |

Great race by the team! 4 spots in the top 10 are pretty damn good Spartacus seems very strong and secure in his riding. He'll probably be tough to overcome in Paris-Roubaix.

Great team race, 4-5-6-7 is absolutely great. And looking at the gap to the top 3, it would be impossible to get on the podium. Hope you can make a Top 3 in PR!
