Pais Vasco
Another first appearance in a race for Glanbia- this time in the beautiful land of the Basques.
Pintxos and baby eels aside, we are really here for the Team Time Trial.
That is how we start and it is a good day considering the C1 status, a flying Glanbia team finished 3rd missing out by just 6 seconds.
The rest of the stages are really about trying for breaks and seeing how somebody of McKenna, Brandt or Craddock can do in GC terms.
Day 2 is a slog but all 3 manage to finish in the first group
Day 3 sees some break action from Jordan Cheyne but he can’t make any real impact. Again, Craddock, McKenna and Brandt all safely home.
Cheyne reaction:
Day 4: Time Trial ALARM!
Because of our good TTT Craddock and Brandt start out here in a decent GC position.,..
We have a pretty full TT set here but the step up to C1 shows. Craddock and Brandt do respectably though and are 6th and 8th going into the final 2 days.
A seriously steep finish to day 5 will be the real test.
Both our GC men are dropped early on....and drop way down the GC:
That should free us up for some attacks on the final day and indeed McKenna takes the chance:
Then he is joined by Craddock:
It all ends with the top punchers catching the BOTD but still got some excitement out of it
Craddock finishes 20th overall, Brandt 22nd
Summary:
While the TT result was acceptable, what really hurt us here is the lack of any other scoring options like KOM or stronger breakaway participation.
Pointwise this pretty low-scoring but hey Pintxos! Was hoping for ,more from McKenna here but I guess the TT scuppered his hopes and maybe the AI treatment of him.

Coppi Placci:
Yet another maiden race for Glanbia, in San Marino this time....
Hilly Classics are a real weakness for Glanbia which is why we signed Seán McKenna, he also ticked the box of having at least 3 Seáns on the team.
McKenna-ttack
It was an aggressive and impressive ride by him in San Marino, his 14th place probably less than he deserved but still a good result.
14th :
GP Izola:
A week later and we are hoping for more the same in Izola.
However, he was crap.
The whole team just disappeared with rookie Juneau being our best finisher in 90th place
Summary:
Placci showed what McKenna can do for us - score points while Izola showed us what we can’t afford to do- disappear and end up with a zero-pointer

So at the end of March, (if I play around with the table a bit!), Glanbia are in a notional 3rd place.
It is very tight apart from the "Big 2". Glanbia's 3rd place is only 250 points from 10th place
We are still running on momentum from Táchira a bit but April will be crucial.
We have two target races- California and the USA Challenge They are in fact our only races in the month. If we are to hang in there in the to 5 this will be a month where we need to stretch our lead or at least make it a real lead, not just a projected one.

I keep saying that you were flying under the radar pre-season, and I still stand by that Some good racing in the last two months, and especially USA PCC should suit your TTers armada well! Let's see if Talansky can shine in his home race in California, he should be among the strongest hybrids there - although his TT might not be good enough to keep everyone at bay.
Good luck for the month - but don't beat us too often, please

Tour of California:
In our second most important territory this month we face two challenges- the Tour of California and The USA Pro Cycling Challenge
California is a beautifully varied week long Stage race while the US race is a win goal due to its decisive prologue.
It’s in the Golden State we begin with a prologue- exciting already!
Alex Frame is our prologue specialist and we’ll be looking to him a lot this month.
The competition is mighty though and he can only take 10th.
Stage 2 is for the sprinters and whole we tried the set-up Same Bennett’s stint didn’t work out- 7th.
I said this race was varied and to prove myself right Stage 3 was labelled as one for the punchers with a hilly finish. For us this means trying to not lose time for the more important stages ahead. We succeed in this as both Talansky and Craddock finish with the main group.
More of the same terrain on Stage 4. A lucky breakaway take the glory but Craddock showered great form to lead home the peloton:
Stage 5 is for the sprinters and boom!:
After great lead-out work by Alex Frame Sam Bennett wins the stage and takes the Green jersey, probably for the overall too!
Only muted celebrations thought because day 6 is Queen Stage day with some serious climbing. No sign of Talanksy in the favourite’s list which is always a bit worrying...
No need to worry though as he finishes a strong fifth good enough for 6th overall with Craddock in 12th
The race finishes with a 16km TT. For Talansky the worry is he will drop a spot ior two but for Craddock the hope is he will move up...and that’s how it turns out- Talanksy drops to 8th, Craddock moves up to 10th.
Solid stuff from our GC guys but a hand for our real star here- Sam Bennett , Green Jersey winner:
A very satisfactory week in California from Bennett, Talansky and Craddock. Slight disappointment at Frame's failure in the Prologue

We see a number of stalwarts who have consistently contributed through 4 hard seasons.
Freddy Cruz being the most legendary of them all. In 2019 he won Glanbia's first race in the Windhoek TT and despite declines still contributed massively in our promotion year with his second best season yet.
Then we have Sam Bennett. It is a great pity he never quite won a race for Glanbia but racked up the stage wins and (almost) always kept us competitive in sprint races.
Sean Downey will go down as one of the greats of this era especially given his feat this year in winning the Olympia's Tour. That bestowed upon him the honour of first Irishman to win a GC for Glanbia
Lawson Craddock is slightly younger but has been a consistent leader for Glanbia where the right combination if TTs and climbs were around. He has easily posted over 100 points in each of the last 2 seasons.
Finally, in this group of heroes is Tyler "Tour of America" Brandt. Eclipsed by Dan Martin last year and Talansky this year, Brandt has always been a solid Stage Racer and a talisman in the Tour of America with two top 10 finishes in his prime.
All these guys have been with Glanbia for all 4 years....it will be tough mental blow to say goodbye if they are to leave ...but sentimentality won't cut it in the PCT

Glanbia taking the next step, you love to see it! Awesome to see that although Talansky brought a huge season for you that the promotion team was still driven by your core you've built having some great years

Congrats on the promotion and doing nice jog of building round the core and sticking to your philosophy.
As you have noted Talansky had a big season but then it feels like some other guys like Bennett and Mannion didn't get any breaks. So maybe his good fortune was well deserved.

Congrats on promotion! It's nice to see how you kept building around the core TT theme. The calendar changes might have also worked out in your favor.

Happy to see you take the step ip to PCT, I’ve always liked how close you keep to your national focus and I guess ‘team style’. Good luck with your planning for the next season
