The second stage in Qatar was a team time - trial. Etixx were not able to repeat Dubai's feast and finished only 4th, which resulted in Mark Renshaw losing the leader's jersey.
Ian Stannard will be the new leader of the race as it was Sky who took home the bacon. It will be very hard for Sky to keep the take the overall win in the end as they didn't brought any real sprinter here.

After the team time - trial, we are back to the regular flat stages filled with strong wind. Still, it was not enough to break the pack today, which means we are in for a mass sprint finish.
This was of course another opportunity for Etixx to show their strength as they controlled the pack going into the final kilometers.
Stybar leading the Etixx train, in front of Terpstra
But, the LottoNL train put up a very strong fight and it was impossible to get a big advantage over them. Still, as Boonen was leading the pack with 3 kilometers to go, Cavendish seemd to be in a slightly better position than Moreno Hofland.
Under the flamme rouge, both trains were caught by surprise by an amazing acceleration by Daniele Bennati. The old Italian dog still has it in him.
Despite a very strong finish from Hofland and Farrar, Bennati was able to hold on and grab the stage win. Cavendish missed out on the podium, finishing fourth, while Marcel Kittel, his biggest rival, was no where to be seen.

We are back in Qatar for yet another flat windy stage. Mark Cavendish will be looking to finally get his stage win, while his rival, Marcel Kittel will probably just be happy to get involved in the final sprint.
Just like in the first stage, the wind was very strong allowing the Etixx train led by Stybar to open up a gap to the rest of the pack. And this time no one else was able to take the wheel of Cavendish!
Stybar timed his effort to perfection
With no one there to put in danger Etixx' stage win, Mark Cavendish and Mark Renshaw were let to battle out for the stage win, one on one.
Following Renshaw's win from the opening stage, you'd think Cavendish would take this one, but Renshaw clearly had other plans.
Cavendish can't match Renshaw's speed
And it's another stage win for Renshaw and this time without any gifts from Cavendish. Renshaw's victory also puts him back into the leader's jersey, with the pack losing 46 seconds today. Also, it should be noted that less than 50 riders were in that pack.
Not celebrating seems to be Renshaw's way of celebrating

Holy shit
That's very impressive. Etixx has some great riders for an action like that, but still, taking 46 secs with 4 guys is huge!

It looked to me like the pack just stopped ridding when I got away.
The Etixx train seems OP most of the time here. And Tony Martin is not even riding!

Two stages left of the Tour of Qatar, meaning only two opportunities left for Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel to put their names on the winners list this year.
But it might not happen today either as with 5 kilometers to go the breakaway still had an important advantage left in front of the pack. It was at that point, when feeling that his fellow escapes were getting tired, Julien Simon decided to take the race on his own.

The pack managed to catch the remains of the breakaway group under the flamme rouge, but Julien Simon was still in front, looking very strong.
Etixx were not as strong today, with the two Mark fighting for positions
And Simon held on to his lead to grab the stage win. Behind him, Mark Cavendish got himself another second place, but now he is only two seconds behind Renshaw and the overall win.

Last day in Qatar. The overall win seems to be in Etixx' pocket, but the question is which Mark will take it. Cavendish or Renshaw? Cavendish starts the day 2 seconds behind the Aussie rider.
Another fantastic day for the Etixx train with Boonen leading the pack with 3 kilometers to go. It wasn't all good news for Etixx though as the breakaway was yet to be caught!
Most of the breakaway riders were reeled in in the closing kilometers of the stage, but 3 riders still held on in front of the pack, with Bora's Jan Barta being the strongest to take the stage win.
Barta showing off his muscles
No bonus seconds for Cavendish today, which means that Mark Renshaw wins this year's Tour of Qatar! It's another impressive result for Etixx following the Dubai Tour, this time with only the first four places in the GC accounted by the team though.
Two stage wins and a huge overal victory for Mark Renshaw

Valverde and Barguil were feeling great on the longest climb of the day and they decided to attack the rest of the pack despite the big amount of kilometers still left to ride!
They put up a very strong fight on the downhill too, but the pack organized the chase very well behind them and brought them back just as we hit the last flat section of the race.
Valverde leading Barguil on the downhill
Even though no team was able to control the pack on the last climb, there was a very high pace and Valverde was struggling to keep up with the strongest guys in the pack. That early attack might have ruined his chances today!
Kwiatek and Alaphilippe well positioned for their final efforts
A lot of riders were empty on the final climb, but not Laurens Ten Dam as the Dutch rider put it a very strong acceleration with 1 kilometer to go, an acceleration that no one could match, despite the Etixx riders best efforts.
And Ten Dam claimed the victory, with Alaphilippe and Kwiatkowski leading the pack behind him to claim the second and third places on the podium.
Ten Dam doesn't win much, but when he does, he does it in style

Race | Clasica de Almeria | Category | 1.1 | Info | Despite a few climbs along the way, the race is made for sprinters. Still, not a lot of them have showed up for this year's edition with Sam Bennet probably being the fastest guy here. Navardaskas is also here and he will be looking for another success following his win in GP Marseillaise, while Trentin will be leading the Etixx set up. | Etixx | 31. Matteo Trentin | | 32. Michal Golas | | 33. Iljo Keisse | | 34. Fabio Sabatini | | 35. Pieter Serry | | 36. Stijn Vandenbergh | | 37. Martin Velits | | 38. Carlos Verona |

One of the biggest favorites of today, Matteo Trentin wasn't feeling very well on the last climb of the day and he was dropped from the pack, while his team - mate, Michal Golas was setting up the pace!
Martin Velits was not able to bring Trentin back into contention
At the end of the last descent, 4 riders went clear of the pack: Sutherland, Eisel, Ligthart and Zaugg. With the final approaching the group split into two with Sutherland and Zaugg being caught by the pack, while Eisel and Ligthart were still in front with 5 kilometers to go.
Eisel sensed Ligthart weaknesses and attacked the Dutchman to take the race on his own. It proved to be a good move as Ligthart was caught by the pack soon after that.
Eisel digging deep with the flamme rouge in his sight
Eisel had no troubles riding alone in the last kilometers and he grabbed the victory, showing he still has some of those left in his tank. Behind him, Colbrelli won the sprint for second, while Sabatini finished the day as the best Etixx rider in 8th.
Yet another win for Team Sky

We go uphill in the first half of the race and then it's all downhill until the finish line. The climb is not too hard though and we should see a mass sprint at the finish.
And that was exactly what happened, with Stybar putting the Etixx train in the best position for the final sprint even though Giant were close by as they led John Degenkolb to the finish line.
Boonen took over from Stybar and even though he didn't gain any ground for the two Mark behind him, he managed to keep the lead of the pack, which meant it was job well done by him, once again.
It was Cavendish who messed up the sprint though as he timed badly his acceleration from Renshaw's wheel, allowing Coquard and Guardini, who were in his wheel under the flamme rouge to take a serious option for the stage win. Viviani and Degenkolb were also in the mix.
It was a very close finish, with Guardini taking the win by only just in front of Coquard. Viviani finished third, while Cavendish failed to get on the podium in fourth.
