sgdanny - Thanks a lot Really hope you stick around and see Christian turn into a valuable rider!
As you all may notice, this is nowhere near my usual speed of stories. For me that's a plus. I hope it helps me to run this story better on the long term. The lower pace and lower amount of followers/posters leads to a lot less pressure so that's something new for me as a writer here hope you enjoy the story, though!

Another exciting race for me on the calendar. My first classic. This is closer to what I've been doing these last few years. A stage race among the amateurs is pretty much unheard of, so I'm getting into more familiar racing.
Preview
Profile: I don't know the area too well. The Ardèche is more than 600 kilometers from my house, so I never came out this far to race with the amateurs. However, the terrain seems all the more familiar. It's got a nice punch and it offers chances to riders willing to gamble.
Behind the Scenes: It was a long drive here. Maybe I shouldn't have gone home after Tour Med, but staying here for a week to wait for a race was a bit much for me. With the weather good enough at home, I prefer to train there while I can.
I arrived about three hours before the race and got all the official stuff over with as quickly as I could. Luckily the press isn't very interested in me so everything was handled quickly. I tried to find George when he found me first. "Chris, we've been looking for you."
A minute before the start, I was quite nervous. I wanted to do well. My team order was once again: attack. I needed to get into the break of the day, show the sponsor.
The Race
I started at the front and I've picked up a few things when I was racing in Tour Med. I'm getting better at reading the peloton. Suddenly I thought: now is the time to attack!
I had to fight hard for it but luckily I was joined by Alexis Guerin, who became my companion for the next few hours.
We were in for a rough day with only the two of us. If we'd only gotten three more riders along with us, it'd be a more comfortable ride. When you're relaying with two man, it's your turn rather quickly.
But we were out here so it was best to make a good situation out of it. The peloton was never too far so there were no illusions about our ride. It wouldn never last to the finish.
When the peloton came within 20 seconds, Guerin placed a well-timed attack. At that time, my heart was already pounding a million times a minute, so I was pretty much dead. Following was no option.
I still made it over the hill before the peloton did and so I was able to catch my breath going downhill. Not much later, the peloton caught me nevertheless. Yet I didn't look behind me until the first man overtook me. My race was over.
In the end, the race was for Simon Geschke, who had placed an amazing acceleration two kilometers from the finish. Way to beat the sprinters' teams!
José Mendes was better placed after the hill and so he was the first of our team, at a 17th place. Neither Thwaites nor Bennett could really place the sprint they wanted to. I finished the race more than 3 minutes down, on a 82th place.

Analysis
All in all it was a good day for me. I'm only 6 race days far in my career and already I've been in the daily break twice. George told me that shows I have a real talent for those things. "Getting into a breakaway is an art," he says: "and you seem to pick it up extremely fast. Good job."
In the end, our result was not so great, but at least I think the guys are getting in form a bit more. In a few more races, I'm certain we can start aiming for the top 10 and higher.
A nice day in the break once again for Christian, George is right, he does have a knack for it .
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant." [ICL] Santos-Euskadi | [PT] Xero Racing
Welcome once again in France. My fourth race for NetApp and it's my third in France. I don't mind, I like racing in this nation filled with cycling history. Critérium International is a three-day stage race; one flat stage, one time trial and one mountain stage. I'm ready to do my best once again, starting with the flat stage.
I said my fourth race. I raced in the Three Days of West-Vlaanderen two weeks ago. I must admit I rode an anonymous race there, so I didn't think it was necessary to blog about it.
Preview
Profile: Short and fast, that about sums it up for today. The main thing is staying with the peloton, for most of us.
Behind the Scenes: Today, the DS made it very clear: everything is for Sam Bennett here. I had water bottle duties today, but with only 72 kilometers to race, I wouldn't have too much work, so it was all right. Besides that, I was here to make sure König wouldn't lose any time.
The Race
The pace was furiously fast. Even more so than expected.
When we got into the final 20 kilometers, Leopold (König) took my wheel to get out of the wind.
But a split occured. Sam Bennett was positioned at the front and got in the right group, we got caught behind a bit, so I took relays together with some other domestiques from other teams to limit our time loss.
The winner stayed clear of the peloton, quite an achievement on this fast profile! Bérard did it, though.
We rolled in A minute and 36 seconds down. Not many GC contenders were in the first group, so this loss wasn't dramatic, but it wasn't a good start, either.

Analysis
2 minutes down on the GC. We're aiming for a podium place here with Leopold for the overall classification. Tomorrow he'll have to make up time in the time trial, but let's face it, that final day with a mountain finish will be all decisive.
As for myself, I hope to do better than my last time trial tomorrow. I don't want to be last or second-to-last. All other places would be fine for now!
Respectfully yours,
Christian Reinhard Schultze

Day 2 of the Critérium International. Hope we can do even better than yesterday!
Preview
Profile: It's a time trial, so I don't expect much from myself. Tomorrow is the stage finish on Col d'Ospedale, but that won't stop us ffrom doing our best today. Luckily it's only 7 kilometers, prologue distance.
Behind the Scenes: I had a good night's rest, which always helps. In my first race, Tour Med, I sometimes couldn't sleep so well because I just kept running the race in my head. But you get used to the life surprisingly easily. Today I won't get any television coverage, and I'm not riding for the GC here, but I'll try to put in a decent performance nonetheless.

Analysis
Well, I wasn't last or second-to-last today, so that's an improvement! However, being 3 seconds off the final place, I shouldn't cheer so loudly. Maybe I could start doing some training on the time trial bike.
The coach said I shouldn't bother too much with that, though. Better to train on my strenghts for the moment, I don't need to time trial well anyway, I'm no GC contender.
Still, I'd like to keep my options open for the future, you never know. I'll ask my trainer about a decent training schedule including the time trial bike when I get back.
See you tomorrow!

*sees Christian only lost 39 seconds* That wasn't so bad!
*sees it was basically a prologue* Ah well he still has a long way to go (but limit only 59 imh)!

I'm afraid TT is just not a priority right now On that distance, 39 seconds is too much, though
Well, In my career I'm already at the national championships, so I'll post another update now
Time for the final stage of this Critérium International. Everything is still on the table for today, so let's give it 100% today!
Preview
Profile: My first real mountain stage as a professional rider. These types of terrain were my favorite in the amateur category. I love the mountains so I'd say: bring on this profile!
Behind the Scenes: Today the DS decided to finally give me a bigger role in the team. I was very excited and nervous to hear what place I'd have in the team plans today. At the tactical meeting two hours before the race I found out:
"Today, we attack. Leopold (König), there are some dangerous guys here, like Moreno. So if you have the legs, try to go early, surprise them. Chris, today I've got an important part for you. I'm counting on you to stay with Leopold all day long and launch him on the Col d'Ospedale. Do you think you're up for that?" And of course I was!
The Race
The first part of the race went good. I was feeling better by the minute.
The breakaway of the day consisted of 9 riders. If you had to choose between those 9, De Clercq was definitely the best bet for the victory of the day.
Meanwhile, I stayed close to Leopold König, who was right behind me. I had Huzarski and Machado before me, we were at the front of the race. We wouldn't take any risks here.
We reached the foot of the climb and I looked at Leopold. He nodded his head and that was all I needed to know. We moved to the front and I stepped on the pedals.
I kept the pace high and we were happy to see we were taking a nice gap on the peloton. Luckily no Sky train here today!
But then I had to let Leopold go. My job was done, but I still had a rather large gap on the peloton, where the teams were really watching each other. So I decided to catch my breath and keep a steady pace, see where I'd end up.
Unfortunately, Navarro caught up with me and went straight to Leopold. In the end, we had to be happy with a second place.
In the final kilometer, I started dreaming of a top 10 place. The peloton was still not in sight and so I might have a chance at hanging on.
I crossed the finish line just when the peloton came around the corner. 6th here today!
For me, this is a fantastic result. Despite my weak time trial, I even ended up in the top 10 of the General Classification.

Analysis
What an amazing day for me. After a successful attack with Leopold, I managed to hang on for a personal result and it's amazing to see it work out. Critérium International is not just any race, this counts. I believe this is the start of my international career. I finish 9th in the General Classification and on top of it all, I return home with the Young Jersey.
I'm extremely happy and I'm already looking forward to more of this riding!
Amazing riding from Christian, he must be pretty happy with that!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant." [ICL] Santos-Euskadi | [PT] Xero Racing
the_hoyle - Yeah, that result is a welcome one! Domestiques sometimes can get in trouble when they need a new contract because they're pretty invisible. They do a lot of work for the team but nobody sees that. This way at least Christian is getting noticed more than once
I think there won't be an update today, too busy a day. Tomorrow, maybe
I was shocked to realize this is the first time I've ever been to the Netherlands. Oh well, I'm here now, aren't I? The Volta Classic Limburg was next on the program!
Preview
Profile: The course is considered flat, but there is a lot of up-and-down along the way. A mass sprint finish is more than imaginable, though. We're here with Scott Thwaites to contend for the top 10.
Behind the Scenes: I haven't had much time to enjoy the Netherlands, but that would all change with today's race. This time, the DS has briefed me on my role days beforehand. If I could, another breakaway. I'm very happy to learn I'm building a name for myself. Christian Reinhard Schultze - breakaway specialist. Sounds good for now.
The Race
Not wanting to disappoint the management, I waited for the perfect time to breakaway. Today I felt how earlier how better, so I went as soon as the flag was down!
Me and the merry-band were in for a day of pain. The peloton gave us 6 minutes at the maximum. Smeyers, Helven and Gate were my companions for the next few hours.
The peloton reduced the gap quickly, though. We felt their breath as they turned on the heat.
For the honor, we fought to be the last remaining breakaway member. I won today's struggle and the peloton caught me going into the finale.
Rast and Offredo managed to avoid a mass sprint and contest for the victory of the day!
We didn't even get in the top 40 today.

Analysis
To be honest, it's been a disappointing day for the team. We totally got caught behind when the finale began. Scott only managed to finish top 50, barely. We were hoping for a top 10 spot, you do the math...
At the end of the day, I'm happy I was able to show the team colors in the breakaway. Every day in the breakaway is a great one, for me!
