I managed to succesfully find my way to Cortina, and knocked rather gingerly on the front door of the house. Aunt Ashi Wangmo opened the door, a beaming smile on her face. She told me how pleased she was to see me, but Uncle Luigi was away on 'business' and their daughter was at university in Trento, just south of here, but would be back next weekend; so it was just us two at the house together. We sat and chatted for a while, reminiscing about life back in the Land of the Thunder Dragon, and how much we were both missing it. Thankfully, she didn't steer the conversation on to cycling - I've had quite enough talk of that recently!
The next day I went out on a reconnaisance trip in my little rented Fiat Panda, to see exactly how steep the surrounding passes were. I eventually settled on a training route - set out west up the Passo Falzarego, and then tackle the descent, which swings round southwards, until I spotted a small side-road, which took me to the foot of the mighty Passo Giau. I would then proceed to climb that and then, after a difficult but satisfying descent, arrive back in Cortina in less than a couple of hours.
This picture of the Passo Giau hangs in the spare room (my room) of my aunt and uncle's house in Cortina. According to Ashi, Luigi is a big fan of cycling.

It was my last day in Cortina. Weary, and rather worryingly, exhausted, I returned back to the town after a particularly strenuous training ride. Since it was getting late, I thought I'd head down to the Bar Dolomiti in the town for a quick drink.
As soon as I arrived, the hubbub of the thronging crowd inside hit me like the wall of crowd noise you experience cycling up a mountain. I quickly calibrated myself and ordered a martini from the bar (shaken, not stirred, naturally) and sat down in a relatively quiet corner, sipping languidly. I looked up and gazed across the room. I was intercepted by a piercing, yet benevolent gaze coming from the other side of the room. We both simultaneously stood up, and as if in a trance, walked towards each other. I was snapped out of my reverie by her husky inquiry,
'What's a handsome young Indian like you doing 'round this part of the world?'
'I'm from Bhutan, actually. I'm here on holiday, with relatives.' I replied stutteringly.'
'How wonderful.'
Her phone started to ring. She blushed, and in a smooth movement whipped it out from her pocket. After scanning it briefly with her hazel-brown eyes, she looked up at me.
'My mother wants me back home. I'll see you some other time, mio caro.'
With a swish of her ravishing dark hair, and a smile on her face, she strode out, her shapely figure resplendent in the light of the bar.
Spoiler Fourth Wall Commentary
Sorry if these little interludes are boring you, they may seem a bit pointless at the moment but they'll be a key part of the story to come

I liked reading both interludes. I really wonder though what the hell was that in the bar? Give her your number.

Spoiler Nice to know the interludes aren't a waste of time Anyway, back to the racing...
Volta Ciclista a Catalunya 17th - 24th March 2013 | UWT |
A difficult race awaits us here in north-east Spain. Two big summit finishes in the middle of the race, including a vicious queen stage on stage 4, are followed by two deceptively difficult hilly stages at the end, with a few opportunities for sprinters sprinkled here and there. It won't be easy, no doubt, but hopefully it will be a challenge!
Rigoberto Urán
Vasil Kiryienka
Dario Cataldo
Peter Kennaugh
Chambula Dorji
David López
Danny Pate
Xabier Zandio
A very strong climbing squad that has arrived here in Spain, Uran will most likely be the leader but Kiryienka and Cataldo are there as super-domestiques and potential stop-gap leaders.
Favourites
Joaquim Rodriguez had a brilliant start to the season, winning the Vuelta a Andalucia in style, but then faltered in Paris-Nice, losing almost 15 minutes across two of the hilly stages. He bounced back in style to win the Montagne de Lure stage, and will be eager for a good performance in his home tour. He has an excellent team at his disposal - Moreno, Spilak and Trofimov is quite a trio!
Ryder Hesjedal was victorious both on the Green Mountain and overall in Oman, and is fresh after opting out of participation Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico. Dan Martin is a viable alternative for Garmin if Hesjedal fails here.
Roman Kreuziger similarly avoided participation there, instead he comes off the back of a stage win and 3rd overall in Algarve.
Bauke Mollema, on the other hand, impressed at Tirreno and ended up 4th in a strong field only by virtue of a poor time-trial.
Rigoberto Uran is in his first race of the season, so will probably be a bit rusty, but you never know what to expect from the Colombian.

Hopefully Team Sky will allow the Champ to try to get into a breakaway on stage 3, 4 or 6.

sutty, Ian - Indeed it's a tough race, but I'm sure he'll have some fun going both uphill and downhill
Shonak - I think that's what's on his mind, however it is Sky...

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya | Stage 1: Calella - Calella | UWT |
We were underway in my World Tour debut! Not quite such a thrill as my first race in Mallorca, but still a great feeling nevertheless
The 1st category Alt del Montsany is the only major hurdle today, with a long, narrow, winding descent perfect for me!
I couldn't help myself taking the lead, even if that meant getting dangerously close to the race officials' car!
The rest of the race was rather uneventful, the favourites obviously trying to save up for the big mountain stages later on. As we don’t have anyone who can sprint in our squad, we sat just behind the chasers and watched it all unfold.
Daryl Impey pipped his Orica-GreenEdge teammate Allan Davis to the line to claim a 1-2 for the Aussie outfit; and Bauke Mollema announced his presence before the mountains with a surprising sprint to 4th place.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya | Stage 2: Girona - Banyoles | UWT |
A very flat day today, no mountain points on offer or anything, so we waited in the bunch for the whole day.
Things got very stretched out as we went round the finishing circuit but we just kept calm in the middle of the pack.
Hang on, look at this - it's Kwiatkowski in the lead with none other than Danny Pate on his wheel!
Daryl Impey shoots round the inside to claim another impressive victory but that's a phenomenal performance from Pate to grab 3rd place!

Tomorrow's the first mountain stage proper of my career (apparently that tough stage in Mallorca doesn't count) as we climb up to the ski resort of Vallter 2000. Can't say I'm not looking forward to it!

| Volta Ciclista a Catalunya | Stage 3: Vidreres - Vallter 2000 | UWT |
It was quite a windy day, and with some long flattish sections in the first half of the parcours, we had to be on guard against echelons forming. However, we massed at the front as we hit the slopes of the first climb of the day, the Alt de Sant Hilari, just to make sure we stayed out of trouble.
Interestingly, three riders broke away near the top of the climb, presumably in search of mountain points; Warren Barguil (who you can just see in the distance), current KoM jersey wearer Tim Wellens, and Diego Ulissi. Surprisingly, Orica-GreenEdge, who had been doing all the pacing at the front, allowed this dangerous trio away to join the main break, which in itself contained strong climbers Bart De Clercq and Ivan Santaromita. I thought about following but I reasoned with myself that the DS would probably get angry at me for failing to stay with the rest of the team.
Just as we hit the lower slopes of the second climb of the day we overhauled Wellens and Ulissi, but Barguil had linked up with the break by this point, which had a rapidly decreasing three-minute advantage.
The climb was short, but tough and around me I could see some tired-looking faces already.
With 12km to go the gradient started to ramp up a bit and the DS told us to get ourselves onto the front and set the pace, but we got swamped by a wave of riders. Things weren’t looking great.
8km to go and RadioShack hit the front and all of the break apart from Santaromita had been brought back. Rigo was feeling good today and managed to find himself near the front, protected by David Lopez, seemingly resurgent in form after his nasty crash in Mallorca. Meanwhile, Kiryienka, Cataldo and myself were further back, all of us struggling rather to match the pace.
Uran was feeling so good he even decided to attack! No response from the other favourites, who were biding their time, presumably.
Eventually as we went under the 5km to go banner, Rodriguez and the Belkin duo of Kelderman and Mollema got their act together and started to organise a chase.
Purito used this as a springboard to launch a blistering attack which saw him sail right past the Colombian.
Riders were now scattered all over the place and I found myself fighting to stay in the peloton, which was still around 50 riders strong.
Rodriguez cruises to a fantastic victory with time to celebrate!
Rigo comes across the finishing line about 45 seconds later according to the unofficial clock, with just Kreuziger and Mollema in the background for company. A fine performance by him.
I stay in the main peloton, my legs burning, but nevertheless a pretty good effort I think, about four minutes down. That was a seriously tough climb!
Rodriguez’s insane acceleration was the thing that destroyed the bunch I think, as most of the favourites took up pursuit of him, splitting the bunch apart. Some large gaps to come out of just those 10km of racing up the climb!
