I hope he's getting better, but I don't think he has suddenly changed. The climb itself wasn't really hard for the riders. |

Do you mean serious by finishing in the top 50? |

Haven't read the topic due to obvious reasons.
Downloaded the stage. Watching now. It's a british eurosport transmission. I have only one question. This "Brian" guy who co-commentates....on a scale of one to fucking stupid how much of a moron is he?
He hardly goes two sentences without saying something stupid.

Stupider than Paulo Martins? Cause if yes, my god, the world is doomed. |

No, not nearly. He says mildly stupid things with ridiculous frequency

Please tell me you're not serious.
He knows very little about the sport, he's unbelievably arrogant, he flat out lies when he doesn't know something, he says stupid shit CONSTANTLY, he literally doesn't go 10 minutes without overhyping or defending one of his favorite riders just because they're his favorite, and did I mention he's unbelievably stupid?
Here, let me sum up how f***ing stupid he is and how little he knows of cycling with one single anecdote:
He has, on several occasions, insisted that even though the gap between riders A and B is, for example, 4 minutes, it's only that big because rider A is going downhill and B is still going uphill. Once B gets to the top and starts going downhill his speed will be higher so the gap will be half of that or less.
Yes, he said that. Several times. Piçarra and Bonamici haven't bothered to correct him since the first time, at the 2006 Tour, when in the middle of Floyd Landis' epic stage win they spent 15 minutes ignoring what was going on and trying desperately to get Martins to understand what a moron he was. AND IN THE END HE REFUSED TO ADMIT HE WAS WRONG
Also, the fact that he's been caught trafficking dope to professional and amateur riders doesn't help. Neither does the fact he recently wrote a long article insulting every fan who dares criticize Armstrong for doping, because Armstrong is the best person ever. And "incidentally", his favorite
EDIT: Meanwhile the 'Brian' guy has toned down the stupid and is doing good commentary. Must've been a bad day

Oh and I'm being told that today he "joked" about 30 cyclists dying and Contador breaking both arms. What a lovely guy
(And apparently in today's transmission he also talked of 'Irizar from New Zealand' )

I noticed that too - he managed to speak non-stop for almost 10 seconds without having to pause for at least 5 seconds in between words to say 'umm' - a significant achievement

Brian Smith is a pretty decent commentator from what I've heard. He is with Harmon as opposed to being lumbered with the usual Carlton Kirby (who is awful).
I think when you get to the last climb he talks about Jonathan Tiernan-Locke for a bit (admittedly at the point when he should really be concentrating on the action) which gives away that he is/was a team manager for Endura Racing for the last couple of years.

I've never actually had the joy of listening to Carlton Kirby commentating yet, always seems to be Sean Kelly (talks sense but has a euthanasia-inducing monotone) and the other guy (mind blank)
But he has his own website

Tomorrow the other flat stage. Then the decisive ones. Nice.
Matthews for the win tomorrow

Gerrans once again showing why he is one of the best punchers in the world. Top notch. |

@ Issoisso: I don't have anything against Paulo, there are obviously some things that I dislike in him, and the fact that he is always trying to defend Contador gets me pissed, but I don't see him nearly as bad as you do. Opinions I guess |

Assuming you mean Brian Smith, he is usually pretty good so I'm quite surprised. Not as good as someone like Sean Kelly but he still knows a fair bit about the sport.
