My first race for Omega Pharma - Quickstep, and it's a hilly profile. It's not my cup of tea, but the management has given my a special role today...
In the first kilometer, I escaped, orders from above! It was exciting though, jumping away from the peloton in front of a roaring crowd. I loved it!
I spend 20km alone, praying for a breakaway companion. Finally, Spanish rider Aramendia joined me. That was a relief, the plan could continue.
Halfway the race four other riders joined us, the strongest of them was Kiserlovski. I was told to stop riding and wait for the second part of the plan. Being in the breakaway was amazing, but it's hard. People misjudge it on television, it's much harder than just sitting in the peloton.
On the second climb of the day, I had to let the group go, I'm not much of a climber and if I needed to leave some energy for later, it was best to let them go.
And then it became obvious what the plan was. Sylvain Chavanel escaped from the pack and reached me. I opened up the gas, 100%. I gave it everything for about 10 minutes, I was dying, let me tell you!
On the next steep hill, he left me behind. And now my job was done. It's been a hard day, but I'm quite happy with the work I did. It was a great final test before the Omloop!
Chavanel caught up with almost everyone. Only Kiserlovski managed to stay in front of him. It's too bad he couldn't finish it off entirely here, but a second place isn't too bad.
Well, I think it was a beautiful day today. Sylvain was a bit disappointed after the race but I cheered him up with some jokes. All in all, it's been a nice day, and we're all ready for the start of the Belgian season. Anyway, here's today's result:

Great start to the season in Qatar with Tommeke and i am more than happy to see that first race for Jan in his new colours was great too for the team, as he helped Chavanel a lot in chase for that second place.

Thanks again to everyone for following (and commenting). You're all so great!
Jakstar22: Thanks. Yeah he's doing what he can
the_hoyle: Yeah it was so damn close. But 2nd isn't bad, Chavanel will get his wins this season!
ste_18: Kiserlovski was just a tad too strong today, he deserved the win
JuanMotr: Thanks! When do you smell his first personal victory?
juszta: Thanks!
sutty68: Cheers, mate Hope he will be of use in the cobbled classics, with his brother!
FreitasPCM: Thank you.
Avin Wargunnson: Thanks, Tom has an early form and I wouldn't be surprised if he carried it all the way to Paris - Roubaix. I hope Jan can help Tom just as much as he helped Chavanel in the cobbled races! |

The start of the Belgian season. Last year, Bart really impressed the Belgian crowd by coming in 12th, racing a strong race in bad weather conditions. Let's hope today will be no different!
At the start of the season, I set my goal for today as being able to launch Tom to victory. However, when I fell ill yesterday, I realized it would be more difficult than I thought.
This morning, I appeared at the start, feeling bad and looking like hell, I hadn't slept until 3 am. The manager wanted to keep me in bed and substitute me for Dries Devenyns, who would be able to race. I told him I wanted to race anyway and he let me.
Pretty soon I was caught at the back of the peloton and I had to forfeit the race halfway.
I'm disappointed today, and I can only hope I'll be alright for tomorrow, Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne. However, I think I did a good thing by quitting, maybe that will work in my advantage considering tomorrow.
Despite my poor racing, I'm very proud of Jantje, who is racing better than anyone would even think. I'm certain he made the right choice by coming to the road. He did excellent today!
I was able to stay the the front of the peloton all day, which is necessary in a race as this!
My real first test came when Niki Terpstra upped the pace on Tom's command.
I found myself surviving and as the rain started pouring harder, I felt better and better. My biggest specialty in the field was mud and slippery profiles. Well, that and a fast finish.
It's incredible but Niki managed to narrow the pack down to 19 riders. Four of those riders wore our colors: Me, Tom, Niki and Sylvain. Tom put a lot of trust in me by making me his lead-out for the final sprint.
I didn't have too much energy left so I had to make a choice. Instead of taking him on a long lead-out which might've been to slow, I tried to give him a very fast-paced lead-out, but that meant I could only do it for 100m or so. He had to give it a long sprint.
He barely missed the victory today, and finished right behind Jurgen Roelandts! I finished 18th, one but last of the group.
I think I did fairly well, considering this is my first race with the big guys. However, I also felt I didn't do my job well, and it was my fault that Tom didn't win. I should've been able to provide him with a better lead-out. It's like he read my mind because after the race, he told me: "Don't worry about it, kid. You did great."
That's all he said, but it suffices for me. He's a great rider and an even greater man. I hope I can do more for him one day. All in all, my debut on the cobblestones are successful. Here's the full result:
