Ups:
- GreenEdge's fantastic and unexpected first season.
- Gerran's win in the TDU.
- Rabottini winning after an amazing effort in the Giro.
- De Gendt's incredible and courageous win on the colossal Stelvio.
- Gerrans edging out Cancellara and Nibali in the MSR!
- Marc Madiot screaming out the FDJ team car window to Thiabut Pinot on his way to that great stage win in the Tour.
- Hesjedal's win at the Giro.
- The Vuelta, entertaining from start to finish.
- Dopestrong finally being 'brought to justice.' What a day that was.
Downs:
- The UCI.
- Sky's dominance at the Tour.
- Cadel Evan's apparent 'sickness' causing him to not ride well at the Tour. Or for the majority of the year.
- The Tour stage where tacks were thrown onto the road, eventually bringing down Kessiakoff (Ending his Tour) and Leipheimer.
- The Armstrong case, as great as it is having it publicly known he's a compulsive lying doper, it is bad for the image of cycling.

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Iljo Keisse's win in stage 7 of the Tour of Turkey as an 'up'. That was one of the best finishes to a stage you are ever likely to see. |

Yep, that's it. I get them mixed up. Same team, kind of similar surnames threw me off.

Ups:
- We finally fucking got Armstrong.
- Boonen back on cobbled form
- Amazing Vuelta, easily the best GT this year
- Gilbert's WC win
- Sagan at the Tour, just amazing to watch
- De Gendt at the Giro
- Another strong season for Nieve
- Giro dell'Trentino was one of the best races all season.
- Van Asbroeck confirmed his talent with a third in the U23 WC. Not a big moment for most people, but I've been following him since the start of the season.
Downs:
- The entire Tour... seriously, one of the worst GTs I've seen
- Sky's negative racing throughout the rest of the season
- The Giro was super boring with no major contenders and almost nothing happened
- Cancellara's injuries
- Gilbert's early season form
- Vinokourov winning the Olympics, easily one of the lowest moments this season
- Tacks at the Tour
Plenty of others but these are the ones that come to mind.

Ups:
- Nibbles' first half of the season, how great is to watch him race
- Paris - Roubaix, the race of the season
- De Gendt and Contador saying hello to the "attacking from far is impossible in modern cycling" mob
- Travis Tygart
- Purito's win in Lombardia
- Sagan & Degenkolb, got the feeling that I'll enjoy watching this pair in the classics in the next years
- Thibaut Pinot
Downs:
- Wrestling at La Toussuire and Peyragudes
- The shitty Giro, and terribly subpar GT racing in general
- Cancellara is still giving away wins for no particular reason
- Cancellara's injury in De Ronde
- Nibbles signing for Astana
- Gesink

Do you count Gesink as a down or are you mentioning he's gone down (as in 'on the ground' ) ?

I count him as a down. Not as much due to performance as due to the fact that he keeps crashing (so the second part of your question actually makes sense ). I just don't buy ruben's "bad luck" explanation, and I find quite disappointing that Gesink still hasn't learned to stay out of trouble.

Ups
1. British cyclists continue to win lots. I remember when we pleased just to see a rider somewhere near the front of the pack!
2. Boonen - we are watching one of the all time cobbled classics greats.
3. The Olympics road race both womens and mens, underlining the why I love cycling racing. It was unpredictable and fun to watch. The crowds were awesome, lets never forget the greatest free to view sport ever.
4. Stage 17 at the Vuelta - the race was won on a medium mountain stage. In fact some of the best stages of recent years have been on the lumpy medium mountain stages. Unpredictable sneak attacks rule!
5. Cavendish moves away from Team Sky. It was an ugly marriage with a fairly clean divorce.
6. The emergence of the new breed of stage racers - TvG, Pinot, Rolland, De Gendt, Henao, Quintaro. They seem to have great panache really looking forward to seeing how they develop.
Downs
1. Armstrong saga - I just have had enough of seeing the guys face. Congrats to the guys that pinned it down and got it all out in the open. Desperately hoping cycling can move on and 2013 can be the year Armstrongs name wasn't mentioned.
2. Endless Sky (as in the cycling team!) bashing/fanboyism. They ain't the b-all and the end all and they are not the devil incarnate either.
3. Jonathan Vaughters. I have an irrational dislike of the guy, I don't really understand why. 2012 he was as irratating as ever!
4. Pat McQuaid - I have an irrational dislike of the guy, easy to understand why.
5. The Schlecks. What the F*** is wrong with these two? They could be such great riders yet they risk appearing as a footnote.
6. Crashes at the tour - 8 man teams is surely a way forward.
