Tour of South Africa
The first HC stage race is over and it was a mix of joy and disappointment. Disappointment as the stages weren`t as selective as hoped and so the main selection was due to bonus seconds. Joy as Bellis luckily took some of these seconds to secure a 4th overall result and the win in the U25 ranking, which was about what he had expected. And also he was able to win the last stage in a sprint finish. So pointwise a good race for us.
"It was a good start into the season. I am happy with the 4th and a stage win and this should be a good base for my season", Bellis after stage 7.

Tour de San Luis
Our trip to South America went pretty successful. Our former goal to get Geschke into the top 10 and a stage win more or less worked out. Just it wasn`t the German being our best placed rider. Jesus Tendero fought hard and finished on a brilliant 8th in the GC. Together with Geschke`s win on the final stage and 3 riders in the top 20 of the GC it was the expected outcome.

Thuringen Rundfahrt
From Argentina to Germany. No question that this was one of our most important races. We came with a strong squad containing Lars Boom and Simon Geschke as also Tendero, 8th in San Luis.
Our goal was to take 2 stage wins and in best case win the overall with Lars Boom.
The race started with a "boom". Our squad won the opening TTT. Something we haven`t had expected at all as this wasn`t our best event last season. And it continued like it started. Simon Geschke won the 2nd stage as also the stages 4 and 5. Lars Boom also celebrated his first win in the rainbow jersey and won the hard uphill finish.
With his 5th in the ITT and Geschke`s 3rd on the final sprint stage both riders were in a great GC position. They were only beaten by local rider Gerdemann. But with two riders on the podium, 5 stage wins, the point jersey and also to mention Blank`s 3rd in the KoM standing and the 2nd in the team ranking was an awesome performance by all our riders.

Gisborne GP
Late in February our team headed towards New Zealand for the Gisborne GP. With 4 stage wins in this month Geschke was expected to lead the team. But as all the best puncheurs of this division were participating we could only hope for a top 10.
The race was ridden pretty hard and so a trio decided the win with Ginanni being the lucky one ahead of Efimkin and Froome.
Geschke finished in the bigger next group as 22nd and proved to be a good puncheur even though his strength is surely the sprint finishes after a tougher stage.

GP Lugano
Parallel we were racing in Switzerland. Jonathan Bellis did well in his season opener in South Africa with a stage win and the 4th in the GC. The puncheur elite was in Gisborne and so the number of opponents was reduced. Still riders like Dowsett, Kolobnev, Flügel, Schreurs or Ben Nasser speak for itself. The quality in this years PCT is very high.
Bellis was very active and always tried to jump into the late attacks. In the end only one rider was stronger than him. Flügel won but then it was already Bellis coming in ahead of all the others. Once again a great success.
It was the end of an awesome February with lots of great results.

Sorry for waiting that long to post some reviews even though I had lots of great races in that time. I was pretty busy with university exams. I will later or most probably tomorrow also post a review of the already raced March races and try to be more up to date for the following races then.
Also I have updated my first page where all races (including the newest) are posted with stage results etc.
Also the podium and palmares are updated. |

Strade Bianchi
We started the March in Italy with our new leader Jonathan Bellis. The race suited him very much as it`s a mix of sprinter and puncheur race.
Our team was always trying a bit and did work perfectly for him.
When the real selection started Jonathan was in the right position and only had a few riders with him. In the group sprint he was far too strong and won in a dominant way.

Volta ao Algarve
The Volta ao Algarve was our win goal. Last year`s 2nd Lars Boom was our leader and we hoped that he can step up as the 2012 winner Luis Leon Sanchez wasn`t starting. Simon Geschke was his main support and was supposed to look for more stage wins of course.
Unfortunately our team made a mistake on the easier looking 2nd stage where Boom lost more than 2min due to bad positioning. The same happened to another top favourite in Dave Zabriskie and both couldn`t gain enough time to come back again.
The good result on the hard uphill finish and the 2nd in hte time trial showed that the overall win could have been possible otherwise. So we lost lots of possible points in the Algarve.
Mentionable are Velits` and Passeron`s attempts in the breakaways. First one collected some KoM points and was close to win the competition.

Olympia's Tour
The Olympia Tour was Vantomme`s first stage race this season. The profiles looked very good for him and we hoped that he could finally grab a stage win. Also we were aiming a good GC position here.
The race started as many races went in the last months. 2 2nd places for our sprinter, which meant more waiting for the first win. Luckily he was able to grab enough bonus seconds to take the leader jersey in these stages.
On hte 4th stage then the big breakthrough. In a very close sprint he took his first win for our team and finally delivered. This gave him new strength and without all the pressure on him he also took the stages 5 and 7.
Unfortunately the time trial helped Cornu to overtake him in the GC. But a 2nd in the end with two time trials is definitely a great result. Also the point jersey and 3 stage wins and 2 2nd places are more than expected. In total one of our best races this season.

Tour of Sochi
Lars Boom was our leader here in a hilly race with a long time trial. We expected several good puncheurs here. In the end we even got two stage racers in Kritskji and Dekker. This made us a bit afraid as the hilly stage could easily be a small advantage for the better climbers.
Nevertheless a top5 was our goal here.
With Cucinotta finishing as 7th on the first stage the race started pretty well. And the 2nd stage became even better. Breakaway expert Passeron once again gave it a try and fought until the end. The peloton came close but it wasn`t enough. The experienced French took yet another breakaway win and also the KoM and leader jersey.
But as expected he would again lose it on the next hilly stage. And as said the climbers were too strong for Boom, who finished on a good 15th behind Ruijgh as 11th.
The time trial went not as good as hoped and so Boom wasn`t able to take a top 5 in the end. But as 8th and winning the KoM with Passeron once again gave us several points.

Dwars Door Vlaanderen
It was the first cobbled race for us. And with no expert in our squad we sent a rather weak and young squad here.
We wanted into the breakaway and Van Aelbroeck was able to do so.
The favourites couldn`t lead to a big selection but still they caught the group. But Van Aelbroeck fought hard and was able to keep contact on the last kilometers. As 15th he delivered a solid result and gave us unexpected points.
15 | Michiel Van Aelbroeck | 56 | Kristian Sbaragli | 59 | Aurélien Passeron | 61 | Daan Olivier | 63 | Carlo Westphal | 68 | Maximillian Schachmann | 70 | Andrei Kunitski |
Scandinavia Open Road Race
The Swedish race was once again something for the puncheurs. We decided to try something with Geschke here as it`s not perfectly suited to Bellis.
Unfortunately he couldn`t keep contact with the better puncheurs and so it was one of our weakest races so far. He finished as best rider on the 48th and so it was a 0-pointer.
48 | Simon Geschke | 75 | Valentin Iglinski | 89 | Xavier Zabalo | 93 | Martin Velits | 104 | Jesus Tendero | 105 | Hannes Blank | 123 | Christoff Van Heerden |
E3 Prijs
Lars Boom as defending champion once again came to Belgium for his only cobbled experience this season. He is not as strong as the other cobblers from HTC or Bpost but he is a real fighter and likes this race. As support he had Maxime Vantomme, our only real other cobbler.
It was very windy and so the favourites didn`t try to attack with a long way to go. This of course helped both of them and they kept contact until 15km to go, when a trio was finally able to get a gap.
In the sprint Boom showed all his quality and finished on a great 4th. Vantomme was the only sprinter left and even though he was pretty exhausted it was enough for the 7th. Very good team result for us.

True. I am overperforming I guess. Never have expected such results. Though I get some with Bellis. But had expected that Boom can`t repeat his great 2012 season. And Vantomme and Geschke are big surprises so far. |

You might like to know that Rothaus are currently top of the rankings in the division. Im not posting an update until the end of the month - by which time Taiwan means Hollister will have it back - but a nice achievement for you there!

As it stands, you lead them by 21 points but have used 3 more race days. But you do still have the 3rd best points per race day score at the moment.

I can`t complain then.
So much more than expected but still don`t know if I can hold on. On the other hand other teams first need to start scoring. |

Obviously my selfmade kit from last season was not good enough.
So laidbackmarc proves his great skills once again. |

Daan Olivier showing his potential
Earlier this season Dann Olivier was signed as our biggest future stage race prospect. And while we didn`t expect bigger things for the first 2-3 years, where we want to give him the time to learn from the more experienced, he already showed some nice talent in his first pro season.
He mainly had to work for the stronger riders such as Jonathan Bellis or Lars Boom so far. But now in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge we sent a team without real leader. And as he felt strong he initiated the breakaway group of the 3rd stage. he probably didn`t expect them to make it to the finish, where he couldn`t fight for the stage win unfortunately. But with a good top10 result he also moved into the top10 in the overall rankings. Very well done by the young Dutch.
Unfortunately he spent too much energy there to stay with the top riders on the following stage and so he felt back a bit. But still staying in the points so far.
He is definitely proving his potential in that race and we hope for some big results in the future. His dream is to lead a team once in a GT and we are pretty sure that he is capable to do so fighting for a good overall position. |

I hope so. Even though there are quite a few riders that are definitely above him.
But I see him more as a long term project, who should be at his best when my team is more focussed on the mountain races. Something I have ignored more or less so far. |

If you dont promote this season you are in a good position for it next year, with riders developing and others going down in wage (vantomme).

True. Vantomme already made a huge stepdown this season and might go a bit down next season even though he finally delivers pretty well.
Either way I wouldn`t mind too much. I like the PCT planning system but also see advantages if I promote directly as I could train my level 3/4 riders without loaning them. Koep, Ariesen, Krieger, Schachmann, Olivier.
But in a few years other teams will be hard to beat as 2-3 teams are filled with huge talents while my team only has average riders then. |

Team sponsors renew for another year
Good news for the Rothaus - Aegon team as both name sponsors have renewed their contract for another year and will at least stay until the end of 2014.
It`s without any doubt a very successful season and no matter, where it ends in the end, promotion or not, the sponsors are very happy to be part of that development.
"The team has some nice talents and some of them already show what they will be capable of in future. We think in especially of young Koep, who makes the first Pro Tour experience this season but will come back to the team next year. His Avenir performance proved us that he can be a nice piece for us in future", a Rothaus employee said.
"Also Daan Olivier, Davide Villella, Kristian Sbaragli, Alexander Krieger, Johim Ariesen or Maximillian Schachmann will learn from this years experience and are expected to build the teams young core."
"And we mustn`t forget the actual team leaders. Maxime Vantomme probably has his best ever career being high in the PCT rankings and also Jonathan Bellis, Lars Boom and Simon Geschke delivered many top results.
Unclear though is the future of Rob Ruijgh. The climber had a decent 2012 season but obviously couldn`t repeat it so far in 2013. One reason surely is the low priority on mountain races, but in the few chances he couldn`t show his full strength. Also it seems as if he is not feeling very well in the team as he had hoped for a better suited schedule for him. So he might head somewhere else.
Same counts for the sprinters in the team. Claudio Cucinotta, Valentin Iglinski and Christoff Van Heerden all had decent seasons at maximum and so they also might look for a new experience.
A lot obviously depends on the rankings in the end and where the team is going to start next year. But one thing is for sure.
The team will be changed a lot more than last season, where most riders were renewed. Ambitions are growing of course and with the young becoming stronger it`s not looking too well for the "veterans" Blank, Passeron, Westphal, Voss & co. |

Well there is a certain African team based in South Africa (that is shifting its focus solely on African riders next season) that will definitely, without a doubt, be very interested in Christoff van Heerden I'm not going to mention any team names
