Stage 5: 01/02 – 06/02 – - Etoile de Bessèges

Stageprofile:

Our startlist:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0011besseges.jpg

The race:

Today we have the first hilly stage. The others were quite hilly too, in my opinion, but hey, I don’t make the stagebook! We are looking to send one rider in the BOTD, just so we don’t have to work the chase. That’s why we try to send Kelderman in the BOTD and we succeed luckily Smile. He gets 5 others along with him.

BOTD:

W.Kelderman
T. Gallopin
V. Jerome
S. Ponzi
E. Sella
M. Ladagnous

Kelderman with his breakaway companions.

As the stage is really short (80kms) the group doesn’t get more than 3 minutes. At the start of the ascend they still have over a minute.
During the climb Katusha is pushing up the pace and one by one some riders drop, eventually a whole bunch gets dropped on the steep mountain. Vanmarcke and L.L Sanchez are hanging on.
Levarlet is protecting them both, but losing a lot of energy.
Kelderman falls back in the peloton as the pace is just too high to stay up front. He decides to set a high pace.
Just to let nobody escape from the peloton.
El Fares tries to escape but it fails. When Evans tries to escape L.L Sanchez quickly tries to follow.
But the pace of Katusha is just too high to cope with. They both won’t get far and the stage will be decided by a mass sprint!
Freire, Oss and Ravard are still in the first group! We didn’t have enough men for a train so I told Vanmarcke to follow Freire and see where that takes him.
Vanmarcke has enough energy left to follow Freire, as he didn’t do anything on the mountain, unlike guys like Evans.

With 2kms to go Vanmarcke is still following Freire, Freire is really fast but with 1,5kms to go Vanmarcke is still hanging on! With 1km to go Vanmarcke goes himself, he has to fight Roche and Ravard for the stagewin as he blasts past Freire!
With the last 500 meters Ravard is ahead, Vanmarcke is second and Roche is 3rd!
Will he win it for VVV-Venlo Pro Cycling?
The answer is yes! With one last punch he defeats the exhausted Ravard and Roche! A great performance by the young Belgium guy! Kelderman and L.L Sanchez finish in the 40 men first group.

(Sorry I failed to take a screen; I don’t know what went wrong when I took it…)

Vanmarcke celebrating his win.

Comment from Honda:
“Wow, just wow! Finally the first stage win for us in this race! I feel like we deserve it! The whole team has worked very hard and now it finally pays off for us! I’m really happy with Sep’s performance today, he’s not the best sprinter but he surely was the smartest today! Maybe we should do this more often, just try to follow the best sprinter in the field…Got to go now, the Champaign bottles are being opened!”

Stage 6: 01/02 – 06/02 - - Etoile de Bessèges

Stageprofile (ITT):

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0006besseges.jpg

Our startlist:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0007besseges.jpg

Tewelde is our first rider to start today! He’s just enjoying the scenery and enjoying his KOTM-jersey!
i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0008besseges.jpg

Kelderman rides a very good TT and he sets the best intermediate time! But big time favorites L.LSanchez and Cadel Evans still have to start! The moment of truth! Sanchez has just started his ITT!
i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0009besseges-1.jpg

Just like Kelderman he starts very slow, but at the end he will accelerate on the steep, short mountain. Vanmarcke has started aswell, but we don’t expect him to take the lead in the GC. He’s not a good timetrialler.
i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0010besseges.jpg

Wow! Cadel Evans just broke Kelderman’s time by 6 seconds! Unbelievable, will almost be impossible for Sanchez to beat this time! But Sanchez gives his everything, after losing 33 seconds in the first part of the stage he goes on a rampage at the little hill at the end of the race!
Will it be Evans or Sanchez? It’s really tight but Evans wins it! By less than a second! Congratulations to Evans, he wins the stage and possibly the GC, as he was just 20 seconds behind… The sprinters in the top of the GC don’t ride a good TT so the overall win is up for grabs.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0011besseges-1.jpg

Sanchez has already congratulated Evans with the overall win when someone tells him he has to come up the stage! He can’t believe it! He thought Evans had beaten him!
But it’s true, L.L Sanchez wins this year’s Etoile de Bessèges! A great performance by the Spaniard!
i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0012besseges-1.jpg

As you can see he wins it by a margin of under a second, unbelievable!

Tewelde gets his KOTM-jersey handed to him, as you can see he’s extremely happy! He worked his ass off to get it!

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0013besseges.jpg

As a bonus we also get best overall team! It’s raining prizes today!

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0014besseges.jpg

A great stage for VVV-Venlo Pro Cycling, as they take two jerseys and the overall team classification! What more are they capable of? And another top 10 in the GC for Vanmarcke, he rides a decent TT and saves his spot in the top 10!

Comment from Honda:
“Unbelievable! Everything went exactly to plan, but when Evans was faster in the TT I thought we lost it, but then Sanchez got called to the stage! This is like a dream, with Vanmarcke grabbing 9th as well! A great race for us, I’m looking forward to the next ones!”

Stage 1: 05/02 – 08/02 - - Vuelta a Mallorca

Stage profile:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0004Mallorca1.jpg

Our startlist:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0005Mallorca1.jpg

While the other guys were dominating in Besseges, we started with the Vuelta of Mallorca!
The plan is to get Bos to win the mass sprint, and maybe try to get someone in the BOTD. As Roulston was well placed at the beginning of the stage we let him try:
i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0006Mallorca1.jpg

Too bad, it’s raining attacks and he gets pulled back by the peloton. Eventually quite a big group gets away. None of our riders because we figured it’s not worth it too waste a lot of energy. The BOTD contains 6 riders:

J.V.Toribio
P. Bailetti
A. Antunes
J. Herrada
O. Santamaria
I. Merino

As you can see there is only one ‘big’ name in the BOTD; Herrada from Movistar. Their max lead is 3 and a half minutes. We are sitting back in the peleton, enjoying the great scenery here in Mallorca!

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0007Mallorca1.jpg

But especially Katusha really wants to make it a sprint finish, and with just 10kms to go two trains are forming:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0008Mallorca1.jpg

It was a tight sprint and –again- I seem to have lost the sprint pic, sorryPfft.
Anyways, it looks like Liquigas has a great sprint squad with them, with Peter Sagan and Elia Viviani! Katusha was riding for Galimzyanov. Bos places himself in Sagans wheel, and then starts sprinting himself. It’s a tight sprint but it’s not enough for the win! Viviani profits from the work of Sagan leading him out and takes the win home for Liquigas. Bos is able to jump Sagan and finishes 2nd! Manuel Cardoso from Caja Rural is the surprising number 3 this stage! Not a bad stage for VVV-Venlo Pro Cycling.

Comment from Abdoujaparov (as Honda is in France):
“we are quite satisfied with this result, as it’s a very strong competition for the sprinters here. With guys like Galimzyanov, Sagan, Rojas, Viviani, Swift and Cardoso it’s tough to get good results. So a 2nd place is a good result!”

Stage 2: 05/02 – 08/02 - - Vuelta a Mallorca

Stage profile:

Can’t seem to make a screenshot from it, tried several timesPfft. It’s flat again with two small climbs at the end.

Our startlist:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0001mallorca2.jpg

Right from the start we tried to get someone in the BOTD, so we don’t have to work the chase. Tom Dumoulin was the lucky one:
i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0002Mallorca2.jpg

Luckily some others wanted to be in the BOTD aswell, so Tom Dumoulin receives some help. The Dutch youngster gets joined by:

M. Wynants
C. Maggione
J. Pantano

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0003Mallorca2.jpg

But again, Katusha is leading the chase together with Liquigas now. They must feel confident that they can win this time! The trains are almost bumping into each other this time!

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0004Mallorca2.jpg

It’s a quite narrow road so it will be hard to get a good result here for Bos, as he likes the more wide roads. He gets blocked by some helpers from Katusha who are falling back, nevertheless he takes the wheel of Sagan again. But he has lost a lot of energy to get into the wheel. This results in a 6th place. Bos just wasn’t able to put in a last effort to turn the tide. As you can see Katusha’s hard work finally pays off! Galimzyanov gets a great victory in Mallorca! Elia Viviani finishes second and Juan Jose Haedo finishes 3rd. Bos gets beaten by Rojas for the 5th place. As you can see it was very close. The sprinters are all matched for each other!

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0005Mallorca2.jpg

Comment from Abdoujaparov:
“It’s a shame Theo didn’t win here. It sure was possible as it was a very close finish this time. In the end he wasted too much energy trying to follow Sagan and being blocked by some Katusha boys. But now the hilly stages are on the agenda. Let’s see what we can do there!”

Stage 3: 05/02 – 08/02 - - Vuelta a Mallorca

Stage profile:

Our startlist:

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0007Mallorca3.jpg

Right from the start it’s a very, very tough race. Attacks are all over the place! Eventually a group featuring J.J Cobo and Betancur as the biggest names of the group gets away. Cobo is just here for the mountain points. He takes home 30 points and sets a huge step to the overall KOTM-jersey.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k486/timodesigns1/PCM0008Mallorca3.jpg
Cobo & friends.

The group never gets far though, because of the hard work Liquigas and VVV-Venlo Pro Cycling put in.
We want to try to deliver Eros Capecchi up front, as he is our only good climber in the squad. Although his fitness isn’t very good, and his form is -1, we still believe he can win here.
When we reach the last categorized climb of the day, the peleton is still quite big. Leader Viviani of the Liquigas team is still with us! There are some attempts but it’s just too steep to get away. I’ve been told some riders even had to get off their bikes to get up the hill!

Capecchi lost quite an amount of energy, but he is still quite fresh. When we enter the last hill of the race hell breaks loose as a group of 10 cyclists rides away. Capecchi tries to follow but has to leave a gap of about 30 seconds! Meanwhile the peleton has to give in and Viviani finally cracks. Still he must be in great shape, as he followed for a very long time! In the last descent he gives everything, knowing that a GC top 10 might be in store for him! But when the sprint starts he can’t get much closer. He loses 40 seconds on the group in front.

Most important names of the front group are Voeckler, Mollema and Dan Martin. In the steep uphill sprint Voeckler proves to be a real fighter and he wins the stage! Ruben Plaza finishes in second place, with L.P. Nordhaug rounding off the top 3. Capecchi loses 46 seconds to the front group, but he gains 1 minute on the peleton! We’re confident that we can grab a top 10 GC spot here!

Voeckler showing his immense power!

Comment from Abdoujaparov:
“We’re quite satisfied. Eros (Capecchi) showed us that he can compete with some world class riders like Voeckler, Vino, Mollema, and Dan Martin. We are confident that he can take a top 10 spot in the GC today. Expect an attacking style from him tomorrow! We’re going all-in!”

This story is really good. I like the addition of Honda and Abdoujaparov.
