Wiggins really for RR? Why not TT then? And this is a pretty weird team imo as Cavendish, Stannard, Rowe, Swift will struggle on the climbs. Froome not in form. So I guess it`s all for Tiernan-Locke?
Swift is a good hill climber. So is Stannard. Hopefully they let Tiernan-Locke and Stannard lead the team. |

Maybe I shouldn't have said tenth...I'd probably have him sixth, after that top five. I still would be shocked if he won though, even with the Cauberg.
I disagree concerning several names on that list.
As SN said, Froome seems to be running out of form at last, so I doubt he'll be a contender.
Larsson hasn't been anywhere near his 2008 level in the longer time trials this year. I'll be surprised if he hits the Top 5. Not sure about Kessiakoff either, since he's not Vuelta / Suisse class in the flatter TTs.
Durbridge, perhaps. Grabsch, Brajkovic, Malori and Konovalovas beating Contador? No way. Especially not the last two. Konovalovas won a Giro TT three years ago thanks to lots of luck, and hasn't got any notable results since.
Phinney and Van Garderen are definitely serious contenders though.
I think Froome backed off a little towards the end of the race, one he realized a podium wasn't happening, as he wanted to save himself for the Worlds. He certainly isn't in Tour form, but I don't think he's as out of it as he looked. I also think he's a better tter than Contador to begin with.
Grabsch I think is better than Contador on pure power courses. This obviously isn't one, hence the reason I pushed Contador back above him. Brajkovic has whupped Contador's ass before in TTs (https://cqranking.com/men/asp/gen/race.asp?raceid=17602), although I doubt he's in that form right now (again, hence the reason I pushed Contador back above him). As for Malori, he has had his form dip this last year or so, but he was regularly beating a lot of other people we've named a few years back, and he's really young. The course probably doesn't suit Larsson, it's true, but I don't think you can discount Kessiakoff after he beat Contador on a hilly TT course a few weeks back. Lastly, for Konovalovas, yes he won the stage on luck, but he would have taken 2nd on skill (Menchov crashed), and then went and did a top ten at the Worlds TT that year. Yes, once again he's struggled for form these last few years, but he should be hitting his prime right about now, and I bet if he had it he'd be right up there. |

Fair enough.
I don't think that we'll ever see Brajkovic as good as he was in the 2010 Dauphiné again though. And unless something extreme happens, I find it hard to see Malori or Konovalovas even getting close to Contador.
But we'll find out soon anyway.

Can you actually name 10 riders you think would beat him?
He is in good enough from to win the Vuelta, and come 2nd in the - albeit hilly - time trial there. And its one of the weaker TT World Champs fields for a number of years - perhaps since Grabsch won.
Looking at the startlist, I'd usually pick the following five to be at his level.

Larsson

Id disagree - I see it as Martin vs Contador. Froome seemed a bit knackered by the end of the Vuelta, else he could be a threat.
That's exactly how I see it as well

That's not what SN means. He means if it hadn't rained right after Konovalovas rode on dry roads, he would've struggled to crack the top 20 in the stage.
If Konovalovas has a future, it's on the cobbles. Not on the TT course.
EDIT: Besides, that TT was three and a half years ago

Kessiakoff will not be riding the TTT for Astana because of a knee-injury. But he will ride the ITT and the RR though.
EDIT: Wiggins is sick. That's why he did abandon from ToB.

I might be wrong about Froome, I'm not really willing to stand 100% behind that prediction. I still think he was holding back at the end. Just how he wasn't really fighting for positioning or anything like that. He'll have a couple weeks to rest up a bit, and would probably give him 60-40 odds of beating Contador. I think he'll either do it, or Contador will smash him by 2-3min, we'll see.
It is true that the early starters went out better that day, but it doesn't mean he isn't quality. Again, he went 8th at the Worlds that fall, then the next year did 6th in the final Giro TT, 4th in the final Tour TT (a 52km TT, and he beat Wiggo, Menchov, Contador, Leipheimer, Zabriskie, and many, many, others), and 12th in the Worlds again. Plus, by all age related measures, he should be getting better as he hits 27-28, not worse, especially in an event like the TT. I think it's form. He hasn't seen nearly as many top level race days at Movistar that he saw at Cervelo. I'll stand by this prediction. If Konovalovas starts once more seeing a lot of miles at MTN, he'll start producing top-tier TT results again. I think he's quality. |

Are you surprised? Saxo Bank have no chance, so why should he hinder his ITT preparation by taking part

When Konovalovas was 4th in that Tour TT he, as all the early starters, was helped by a change in the wind. Wiggins and Menchov were the best among the late starters, barely making the top 10 over 3 minutes back. And he, as many former Cervélo team mates, hasn't reached that kind of form since he left, and I wouldn't count on him ever doing it.

Talansky replaces Farrar on the US team. Let's see, one of those riders is a pure sprinter who the course is horrible for and has had an year chock full of injuries, during which he has at no pint looked close to form. The other rider is in fantastic form after doing at top 10 at the Vuelta, and although the course isn't great for him, he should be a valuable teammate to the team leaders.
Can someone explain to my why Farrar was picked over Talansky in the first place? I think the USA Cycling guys were recovering from a concussion themselves. |
