Santos Tour Down Under Preview

designrevolutionaustralia.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/santos_tour_down_under.jpg

The Santos TdU is the first WT race of the year. The stages are usually quite flat, although the Willunga Hill will be climbed twice in stage 5. The win will probably go to a punchy sprinter or a puncher.

Our squad:

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/TdUsquad.jpg

We will aim for a top 10 with Gömböcz and Clemson, and Bahr is also one of the best sprinters there, so we have high hopes before the race.

Santos Tour Down Under Stage 1

designrevolutionaustralia.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/santos_tour_down_under.jpg

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tduprofile1.jpg

Today's profile is quite flat, although the small hill with about 15km from the finish should test the sprinters legs. We'll try to get a good placement with Bahr.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdubotd1.jpg

Right after the start, a quite strong breakaway formed. Fenn, Rosseler, Hayman and D.Vanendert were the escapies.

Meanwhile in the peleton Katusha was working hard, with the help of SpiderTech - Cervélo.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu1train.jpg

At the 20km mark, the breakaway got caught and the sprint preparations started with Greenedge being in the lead. At 12km we formed our train with Moore, Gömböcz, Clemson and Bahr. Our train dominated the front, and Moore worked very well, and led the train for a long time.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu3kmtrain.jpg

At the 3km mark, we were leading and Bos and Belletti were on the wheel of Bahr.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu1sprint.jpg

Unfortunately Bahr started his jump too late and Bos jumped through with some others. Will Bahr be able to win?

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu1boswin.jpg

And Theo Bos wins it! What a great start of the season for the Dutchman! He edges Belletti and Bahr on the line!

Some GC contenders like Voigt and Westra lost today 1:27 being caught in a split in the closing KMs.

DS: We screwed our train up, but with time, we'll get more and more experienced and we'll look to improve tomorrow.

Spider of the day

Today wasn't an especially good stage, but Steve Moore deserves one point for his incredible leadout work.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu2kolobnevattack.jpg

The pace in the peleton was very slow, so Lightart and Kolobnev decided to attack. However Lampre - ISD woke up and reeled them in quickly, and initiated a very high pace.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu2clemsonattack.jpg

Despite the high pace, John Clemson decided to attack and Kolobnev, Voigt and Wynants followed him immediately.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu25km.jpg

The attack wasn't strong enough, but Wynants managed to go solo at the 5 km mark. Roux and Dekker tried, but they couldn't catch him. We tried to reel him in, but he was very strong.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu21km.jpg

At 1km Wynants was still in the lead, and had a good gap over the peleton, where a big sprint started.

i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/matinho97/tdu2wynantswin.jpg

And Wynants takes it! He was the strongest of the competitors! Rabobank 2/2 so far, they must be glad with the TdU so far. Pfft Pietropolli comes 2nd and Dekker is 3rd, with Gömböcz following 4th.
