Mid-Year, Manx, Maybes and Mayhem

Its July 2nd today and im sat on my sofa with ITV4 on the telly waiting for the biggest race of the year to start. Its 30C outside and there is a beer next to me, but dont tell my coach.

I'll be rooting for Sky of course, but also for a close friend and fellow Manx, the Missile Mark Cavendish. I spent a lot of time with him through June aiding his preperation. I'm hoping this boosts my chance of a worlds place, but i dont have much hope there.

Now, the Giro. Since the start of the race i have not stopped smiling, except on some of the climbs. By winning Stage 2 i took the Maglia Rosa, this is would have been the high point of almost anyones race, but it wasnt for me.

Nor was winning on the Montevergene, not actually winning the Zoncolan, nor the Top10 overall, nor the KoM jersey never leaving my grasp (which is a record by the way!) My best moment was on the second rest day. Thomas, Moris, John-lee, Dario and i were out just rolling gently along, when a kid, must have only been 15-16 sprinted past us, raced to a town sign before raising his arms in celebration. He then turned to me and said "I'm quicker than Ben Swift" ... 3 stage wins, a maglia rosa and still im not known. My response "So am i", to which the other 4 all started laughing, i swear the kid looked like he was about to cry, so to make up for it he got a free bike from the team, signed by 'Ben Swift'...

I will say if anyone wants to ask me a question feel free, about the Grio, the rest of the season, the rest of the team, anything.

Of course it was my birthday in June. Fortuntly i am in a rest period, so could celebrate properly. It was an all night party in Milan, with most of the other guys on a break and some other friends. Needless to say i was hungover the next day, which didnt impress Robert Millar at all...
I then returned home to the Isle of Man, where i spent time with Mark.

The Maybe, this relates to both the Vuelta and the Worlds. Dave wants me to ride the Vuelta, in a relativly free-lance role, but my original plan was the Tour of Britain, then the Worlds. Im sure it will sort itself out.

Mayhem. This is the press. Since the Giro the media has been all over me, well the european media. The only british media interested in me was Cycling News, not even Sky!

Anyways the race is about to start, so i'll update u all in a few weeks hopefully.

Peter

Nice story Wiley Wink Great rider in Keannugh and well done in Giro. Wearing Maglia Rose is quite achievement. EBH doing great in few races, shame you're loosing him next year. Good luck in the next races Wink

Tour de France - First 10 Days

The big one ... Wiggins major goal for the season, the teams major goal for the season...
No compromise in team selection; Wiggins, Uran, Rogers, Gerrans, Pauwels, Arvesen, Thomas, Knees and Flecha
All the big guns turned up, except Cunego...

Stage 1; Cermonial start before the first break, 4 riders formed around Vanendert(OLO) and Voigt(Leo). Caugt with 22km to go it allowed a surprise finish. Jeremy Roy(FDJ) attacked with 5km to go, and won by 7" over Rojas and A.Schleck

Stage 2; The Team Time Trial was a chance to get an early advantage. The teak took it in full force, finishing second behind Leopard ... sorry i mean Cancellara.

Stage 3; Roy was part of a 6 man break. A comfortable catch and Tyler Farrar took the sprint, with Cavendish second and Rojas 3rd

Stage 4; A 5 man break including former Aussy Champion Cooke(SBS). The catch was made, before a terrific duel between Sanchez, A.Schleck and Contador for the win, wich went to Sanchez.

Stage 5; Ballan(BMC) was the heart of a 4 man break. HTC were in charge today and Cavendish opened his account, ahead of Pettachi and Farrar

Stage 6; A 2 man break, Roy and LeLay(AG2R). Farrar took his second win, ahead of Pettachi and Ciolek. Cavendish was 5th

Stage 7; A 3 man break with no-one particularly special. Farrar made it a hat-trick, ahead of Cavendish and Pettachi.

Stage 8; The first hills and the GC race begins. Vansummeren(GRM) was the strongest man in the days break, which also included Ballan, Leukemans(VCD) and 6 others. Caught with 15km to go it set up a good finish. Contador attacked with 14km to go, and was covered by Gerrans. Wiggins tried a move at 4km to go, and Roche tried to follow. Sanchez took the win, overhauling Wiggins on the line, with Gesink third. Rigo finished 8th. No major GC changes

Stage 9; Flecha got in the break, along with Elmiger(AG2R) and 5 others. Flecha took most of the days climbs and the KoM lead. He attacked at 15km to go and went solo. Behind Leopard were chasing hard, and a group of 34 were all that remaind, with most Sky riders still there, after many favorites were caught behind a split. Flecha held off all the way to the line to win Sky's first Tour stage!! F.Schleck was second and Rigo third. Wiggo was in the lead group.
GC 1st Flecha @5" over Cancellara
Flecha leads KoM by 8pts
Uran is best young rider
Sky lead the team rankings

Rest Day; Press confrences and a chance to reflect.
The GC is still close, but with out any mountains thats to be expected.
Farrar vs Cavendish is entraling, especially with small breaks.
Wiggins is perfectly place at 10th to pounce in the mountains

My view is that the team have a great chance to win if we keep going like this. Can they improve on the Giro?
Im still relaxing aroung the Isle, enjoying a great summer.
My next race wont be until late August, at the Dutch Valley Classic. This is a Vuelta warmup, but im still in discussions with Dave as to whether i ride that or the tour. Peter

Some expected result I think

Enjoy your vacation and have fun to watch the tour on television

Faillu
Okay results. If you were there, do you then think, you could have won some stages?
Anyways fine update.

Wiley
@Faillu
Of course i wouldn't have a hope in the sprints, and i dont go great over the hills, so i think i wouldnt have won any stage myself, and at least we have a stage win thanks to Juan. And 3 other podiums is a good result, as is the Maillot Jaune!
