3rd-7th February 2010 - Étoile de Bessèges
The Étoile de Bessèges is a five day stage race in Early February, based in Southern France, around the town of Bessèges. The Stage Race is the first on European Soil for the season, and follows on from the GP Cycliste la Marseillaise, which is held a few days earlier.
2010 Étoile de Bessèges celcebrated its 40th edition of the Stage Race, and since 2005, it has held a 2.1 ranking on the UCI Europe Tour.
Following the victory in the GP Cycliste la Marseillaise, Sky will be sending the same team to the Étoile de Bessèges. We will look to competitive in the sprints, despite a weakened sprint train, and aimming for a Top 10 on GC, as well as trying to get into breakaways on most of the stages.
Previous Winners of the GP Marseillaise include Robbie McEwan, Nick Nuyens and most recent Thomas Voeckler in 2009.

Good luck there! The startlist does not look so strong, I think your goals are realistic and you can clear them. |

3rd February 2010 - Étoile de Bessèges Stage 1 (Aigues Mortes-Le Grau du Roi)
Stage 1 is a 163km 14-lap circuit from Aigues Mortes to Le Grau du Roi. This should be a stage for the sprinters, with no real hills or difficulties on the route, and will be a easy start to the 5-day race.
Riders to Watch: A. Geslin, S. Dumoulin, K. Van Hummel, L, Mondory
My tip for the stage: S. Dumoulin. The French rider from Cofidis has won numerous stages in Europe from a bunch sprint, and in this weakened field, he will be one of the favourites today for the stage.

thanks. the startlist is very weak. i think caisse d'erpagne have the srongest line-up with Uran. He could be the main threat for GC. Although, many of the stages could end in mass sprints, as the terrain is not that challenging for the riders, despite them being classed as hilly

3rd February 2010 - Étoile de Bessèges Stage 1 (Aigues Mortes-Le Grau du Roi)
Viganò takes it in the sprint
Davide Viganò took his maiden victory for Team Sky in a sprint finish in Le Grau du Roi. The Italian took the victory ahead of the French duo of Mathieu Drujon of Caisse d'Epargne and Jimmy Engoulvent of Saur-Sojasun.
The race was started with a string of attacks, with 14 riders trying to attack of the front. Eventually a group of 4 riders were able to bridge a sizable gap from the peleton and stay away for most of the stage. The break was allowed a maximum of 8'11" over the chasing pack, before the pace was upped by Française des Jeux, Team Sky, and the Belgian outfit Landbouwkrediet. The escapees were finally caught with 14km remaining, and the stage was set for a mass sprint.
With no strong lead-out trains available to any of the riders, it was a very scrappy finish, with Davide Viganò of Team Sky the strongest at the end. He expertly followed in the wheels of several lead-out trains before bursting to the line with a long sprint, ahead of Drujon in second.
There were a few problem for many of the teams in the peleton today, with crashes catching out both Morris Possoni of Team Sky and Rigoberto Urán of Caisse d'Epargne towards the finish. Both riders finished in the peleton at the end of the stage with no serious injuries, and should be fine to continue tomorrow.
Viganò wins it on the line

4th February 2010 - Étoile de Bessèges Stage 2 (Nimes-St. Ambroix)
Stage 2 of the Étoile de Bessèges takes from riders to the Historical town of Nimes to St. Ambroix. With the undulating terrain, the stage looks set for a hill rider, with only a small group of rider arriving at the line first, and the peleton scattered all over the route in different groupings.
Riders to Watch: R. Urán, S. Cesar, P. Lastras, C. Riblon
My tip for the stage: S. Cummings. After his victory in the GP Cycliste la Marseillaise on a similar type of stage, the Team Sky rider will be looking for the same kind of result today.

4th February 2010 - Étoile de Bessèges Stage 2 (Nimes-St. Ambroix)
Geslin solos to victory
Française des Jeux rider Anthony Geslin took the stage into St. Ambroix after an attack on the final climb. The victory was also meant Geslin took over the overall lead in the Étoile de Bessèges.
The stage started with the usual flurry of attacks out of the peleton, and a breakaway of 4 riders formed, containing riders from Big Mat - Auber 93, CarmioOro NGC, Centro Ciclismo de Loulé - Louletano and Team Sky, whilst behind them, another group of 9 riders got together.
The lead break gained over 6'11" on the peleton, with Team Sky's Peter Kennaugh gaining enough Mountain Classification Points to wear the jersey on stage 3.
At the 25km point, the main favourites for the stage attacked and slowly bridged the gap to the Kennaugh group, making a small pack of 25 riders. At 12km, Caisse d'Epargne's Pablo Lastras attacked from the front, taking with him Geslin, Steve Cummings of Team Sky and Bert De Waele of Landbouwkrediet.
But this attack was all he could give, and at 8km to the finish, Geslin made his move, followed for a short while by Cummings and De Waele, but soon he dropped them as well, and pressed on to take the win ahead of Cummings in second and De Waele in third.
Geslin has plenty of time to celebrate

5th February 2010 - Étoile de Bessèges Stage 3 (Gran Prix du CC Rhone-Ceze Languedoc)
Stage 3 has the riders going from Gran Prix du CC Rhone to Ceze-Languedoc, finishing with a 2-lap 70km circuit. This could be a stage for a hilly rider, with the route not been too punishing, this could be a stage for the sprinters of a ProTour team.
Riders to Watch: A. Geslin, R. Urán, S. Cummings, S. Augé
My tip for the stage: A. Geslin. The Frenchman took the stage yesterday, and with the finish a possible sprint finish, he could take this one as well.

5th February 2010 - Étoile de Bessèges Stage 3 (Gran Prix du CC Rhone-Ceze Languedoc)
Kiendys fastest in the sprint
Polish rider Tomasz Kiendys took the stage victory today, climbing to second in the Overall Standings behind Anthony Geslin. The victory also means he takes over the Points jersey from Team Sky's Davide Viganò.
Only two riders escaped on the stage, Rabobank CT's Remco Broers and Team Sky's Peter Kennaugh. The pair worked well together until the second climb of the day, where Broers was dropped and Kennaugh carried on his own, sweeping up all the points available for the classifications on the way.
He was finally caught with 12km remaining on the final climb of the day, and the reminder of the peleton looked set to fight it out in a mass sprint.
Kiendys jumped out of the wheel of Jéremie Galland in the closing metres to take the win, and moving himself up on the GC with it.

6th February 2010 - Étoile de Bessèges Stage 4 (Gran Prix d'Ales en Cevennes)
Stage 4 is yet again a hilly stage, which could easily end in a sprint for the bigger teams in the race. So far, only small groups have come to the finishes, mainly consisting of the major ProTour teams, and I expect the same again today.
Riders to Watch: C. Riblon, A. Geslin, R. Urán, B. De Waele
My tip for the stage: A. Geslin. I tipped him for the stage yesterday and he did not deliver, but I think he will have it in the legs to take it today.

Good job with the KOM jersey. I would think that should be pretty much wrapped up. |

Ive been really pleased with the form of kennaugh. Eventhough he is quite high on the GC, he has been allowed to get clear, and take all the points available.
The current podium place of Cummings in third as well is really pleasing. So far I am hitting all my targets (Top10 GC, Stage Win and Getting in the Breaks looking for a jersey)
