sutty68 - I'll try to
knockout - He's only like 6th in the points classification. The stages come with 3 intermediate sprints and they all give out 20 points per winner. Matthias isn't concentrating on those sprints so he's not that high up in points.
VoetsT - Thanks! It's great to wear the jersey another year
jona500 - No, for the moment Matt isn't participating in intermediate sprints. He's not here for the Green Jersey. Since this is his first Tour, a stage win would be a big success already!
Martial1 - Oh no, not another Rojas
the_hoyle - Thanks. It seems he build up well for his 2nd objective of the season |

It's the first rest day in the Tour de France. Here's what happened this week!
Tour de France - Stage 4 1 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | 5h05'42 | 2 | Zdenek Stybar | ASUS | + 12 | 3 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | s.t. | 4 | Carlos Betancur | Movistar Team | s.t. | 5 | Simon Yates | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 6 | Lars Boom | AG2R La Mondiale | + 27 | 7 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 8 | Silvio Herklotz | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 9 | Tony Martin | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | 10 | Tejay Van Garderen | BMC Racing Team | s.t. |
Kwiatkowski takes over the Maillot Jaune here.
Tour de France - Stage 5 1 | Danny Van Poppel | Wanty - Groupe Gobert | 4h34'51 | 2 | Matthias Vleminckx | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 3 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sky | s.t. | 4 | Alexander Kristoff | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 5 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ.fr | s.t. | 6 | Luka Mezgec | Tinkoff - Saxo | s.t. | 7 | Sébastien Turgot | Movistar Team | s.t. | 8 | Francesco Gavazzi | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 9 | André Greipel | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 10 | Barry Markus | ASUS | s.t. |
Another 2nd place after Van Poppel.
Tour de France - Stage 6 1 | Philippe Gilbert | BMC Racing Team | 4h48'57 | 2 | Matthias Vleminckx | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 3 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ.fr | + 1'54 | 4 | Alexander Kristoff | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 5 | André Greipel | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 6 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | 7 | Danny Van Poppel | Wanty - Groupe Gobert | s.t. | 8 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sky | s.t. | 9 | Barry Markus | ASUS | s.t. | 10 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | s.t. |
This was a most interesting stage. The peloton was broken up by echelons. Gilbert had been given a free pass after the first peloton totally lost organisation. So I decided to go after him alone, I came short 20 meters for the victory.
However, this puts me very high up in the GC and gets me in the young rider's jersey!
Tour de France - Stage 7 1 | Marcus Burghardt | BMC Racing Team | 3h50'02 | 2 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ.fr | + 51 | 3 | Thomas Voeckler | Team Europcar | s.t. | 4 | André Greipel | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 5 | Alexander Kristoff | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 6 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sky | s.t. | 7 | Matthias Vleminckx | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 8 | Danny Van Poppel | Wanty - Groupe Gobert | s.t. | 9 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | 10 | Barry Markus | ASUS | s.t. |
Tour de France - Stage 8 1 | Tony Martin | BMC Racing Team | 59'42 | 2 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 16 | 3 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | + 28 | 4 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | + 41 | 5 | Rohan Dennis | Garmin Sharp | + 47 | 6 | Chris Froome | Team Sky | + 49 | 7 | Tom Dumoulin | ASUS | + 52 | 8 | Simon Spilak | Astana Pro Team | + 57 | 9 | Tejay Van Garderen | BMC Racing Team | + 1'00 | 10 | Sebastian Langeveld | Garmin Sharp | + 1'07 |
General Classification after stage 8 1 | Tony Martin | BMC Racing Team | 28h58'57 | 2 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 15 | 3 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | + 40 | 4 | Tejay Van Garderen | BMC Racing Team | + 1'19 | 5 | Matthias Vleminckx | Orica GreenEdge | + 1'50 | 6 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | + 1'53 | 7 | Chris Froome | Team Sky | + 2'23 | 8 | Wilco Kelderman | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | + 2'25 | 9 | Rohan Dennis | Garmin Sharp | + 2'32 | 10 | Simon Spilak | Astana Pro Team | + 2'33 |
Spoiler 11 | Zdenek Stybar | ASUS | + 2'36 | 12 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | + 2'46 | 13 | Ion Izagirre | Movistar Team | + 3'00 | 14 | Robert Gesink | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | + 3'08 | 15 | Cameron Meyer | Orica GreenEdge | + 3'39 | 16 | Thomas De Gendt | Lotto Belisol | + 3'41 | 17 | Alexander Kristoff | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | + 3'44 | 18 | Carlos Betancur | Movistar Team | + 4'01 | 19 | Vincenzo Nibali | Omega Pharma - Well, so far it's been a good Tour. After 9 stages, including a tough hilly stage and a 52 km time trial, I'm 5th in the General Classification! I never imagined that happening. I've also had the chance of standing on the podium, collecting the young rider's jersey.
But there's also been some disappointment. Four times second. I wish I could trade them all in for one victory.
Let's hope I can still do it one of these days!
Matt

If Matt would have taken the victory from Gilbert there, I'm pretty sure PhilBear would have gone all-berserker on him.

Selwink - Yeah not the best talent. But it's true. 2 times in Wevelgem, in Amstel, in Sanremo...
Shonak - Yeah, Matt ruined Gilbert's races too much lately I decided to let him have this |

The second rest day is upon us, and it has been one hectic week. I'm still not getting used to this Grand Tour business, it's still all so chaotic and nervous to me.
Obviously I lost my young rider's jersey in the first mountain stage, but here's what happened this week!
Tour de France - Stage 9 1 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sky | 3h49'10 | 2 | Danny Van Poppel | Wanty - Groupe Gobert | s.t. | 3 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ.fr | s.t. | 4 | André Greipel | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 5 | Matthias Vleminckx | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 6 | Alexander Kristoff | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 7 | Sacha Modolo | FDJ.fr | s.t. | 8 | Luka Mezgec | Tinkoff - Saxo | s.t. | 9 | Nacer Bouhanni | Movistar Team | s.t. | 10 | Barry Markus | ASUS | s.t. |
It was starting to sink in. Maybe I'm good enough to win a stage in the Tour de France, but in order for that to work, I need a lot of luck thrown my way and I need to be able to finish the stage in perfect conditions.
I'm obviously not the kind of rider that takes victory after victory here like Cavendish, Greipel or Sagan.
Tour de France - Stage 10 1 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sky | 3h32'43 | 2 | Danny Van Poppel | Wanty - Groupe Gobert | s.t. | 3 | Matthias Vleminckx | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 4 | André Greipel | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 5 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ.fr | s.t. | 6 | Adrien Petit | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | s.t. | 7 | Luka Mezgec | Tinkoff - Saxo | s.t. | 8 | Kris Boeckmans | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | 9 | Alexander Kristoff | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 10 | Barry Markus | ASUS | s.t. |
Nothing could be done today. I came close, but I was never in the winning position.
Tour de France - Stage 11 1 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | 5h45'02 | 2 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 3 | Jurgen Van den Broeck | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 4 | Chris Froome | Team Sky | s.t. | 5 | Tejay Van Garderen | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | 6 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 25 | 7 | Robert Gesink | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 8 | Simon Spilak | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 9 | Rigoberto Urán | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 10 | Carlos Betancur | Movistar Team | s.t. |
Ouch, that hurt. The peloton in the Tour de France is different from any other peloton. Guys turn crazy here. What's up with the monster pace on the mountain slopes? For a guy like me, this equals torture.
Tour de France - Stage 12 1 | Sergey Firsanov | Team Katusha | 5h40'26 | 2 | Thomas Voeckler | Team Europcar | s.t. | 3 | Pierrick Fédrigo | FDJ.fr | + 1'38 | 4 | Joseph Dombrowski | Trek Factory Racing | s.t. | 5 | Franco Pellizotti | Bardiani CSF | s.t. | 6 | Yoann Bagot | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 7 | Andy Schleck | Trek Factory Racing | + 2'35 | 8 | Maxime Monfort | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 9 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | + 2'58 | 10 | Nairo Quintana | Movistar Team | + 3'37 |
It went a bit better today. I'm finding my great legs, even though we're still in the mountains.
Tour de France - Stage 13 1 | Matthias Vleminckx | Orica GreenEdge | 4h31'28 | 2 | André Greipel | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 3 | Alexander Kristoff | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 4 | Barry Markus | ASUS | s.t. | 5 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ.fr | s.t. | 6 | Danny Van Poppel | Wanty - Groupe Gobert | s.t. | 7 | Nacer Bouhanni | Movistar Team | s.t. | 8 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sky | s.t. | 9 | Luka Mezgec | Tinkoff - Saxo | s.t. | 10 | Adrien Petit | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | s.t. |
I DID IT! Lucky number 13 for me! In a very thrilling sprint, I kept my lead right to the finish line, barely holding of powerhouse Greipel! It felt amazing. Winning in the Tour is unlike other victories. Here, you are the absolute center of the (cycling) world for a day. The Tour de France is broadcasted in so many countries, I can't believe I even did this. YES!

Now hold on to your hats, because things are about to get rought! The final week is filled with booby traps for the GC men. I hope Ritchie Porte will survive them all! There are some mountain stages, a hilly stage and a time trial. For us sprinters, there are two more chances. One more straight sprint and then the magical sprint on the Champs. I hope I make it there, and let's pray for my second victory there, right?
I've got to go again. I told oyu before, the Tour is hectic and busy. Not a moment's rest! Not even on the rest day!
See you in Paris!

All those second places in your first TdF!! Might be the signal for Orica to get you a train for next year! Roelandts would be a brilliant lead-out I reckon Nice victory too in stage 13, guess that's a lucky number then! Furthermore, finishing your first TdF would obviously be an achievement it's self for a young rider like you, keep on going Matt, next objective: drinking a glass of champaign with the yellow one on your way to the Champs

Martial1 - Yeah, he's doing very well. The podium is our objective!
Mresuperstar - Well, maybe it's my new lucky number, too Thanks!
jona500 - A train would be very welcome. I've ruined some sprints just because I was too far back on some stages. Bringing Roelandts would be a first step towards more victories for sure! Drinking champagne, now there's an objective Matt can handle!
Shonak - Thanks! Bertie isn't doing well I don't understand it, though, his stats are still tower high. Must be in bad shape or something.
VoetsT - He'll need that banana to survive the upcoming mountain week for sure! Paris is near indeed
FonsDeSpons - Thanks! Yeah, looking at the field, that victory is amazing!
TimoCycling - The entire team is performing quite well at the moment. Now is Porte's time, with some mountain stages coming up.
the_hoyle - Let's hope we can make it even better
Thanks guys! I can't believe how many people are following and commenting on this story! Really keeps me very motivated!
I hope you don't mind I go through the Tour as fast as I do, but I know from previous experience that a Grand Tour can slow down a story dramatically and I wanted to avoid that! |

Phew, finally, I made it! I'm very happy I was able to finish my first Grand Tour. That final week was a tough one, really exhausted me. I'll need a week to recover from it. For a non-climber, those mountain stages are extremely hard. The people don't see that on their television, but 40 minutes after the winner has crossed the line, we've struggling to get to the top in the time limit...
The fight for the GC was extremely tense, here's what happened!
Tour de France - Stage 15 1 | Jurgen Van den Broeck | Lotto Belisol | 4h04'11 | 2 | Ion Izagirre | Movistar Team | + 19 | 3 | Simon Spilak | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | Diego Ulissi | Lampre - Merida | s.t. | 5 | Robert Gesink | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 6 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 7 | Tejay Van Garderen | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | 8 | Esteban Chaves | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 9 | Bauke Mollema | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 10 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 47 |
Ritchie Porte leads the GC with 8 seconds on Costa now!
Tour de France - Stage 16 1 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | 5h13'54 | 2 | Jurgen Van den Broeck | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 3 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | + 40 | 4 | Simon Spilak | Astana Pro Team | + 51 | 5 | Rigoberto Urán | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 6 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | s.t. | 7 | Nairo Quintana | Movistar Team | s.t. | 8 | Chris Froome | Team Sky | s.t. | 9 | Wilco Kelderman | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | + 1'02 | 10 | Alberto Contador | Tinkoff - Saxo | s.t. |
The Polish supertalent overtakes our leader with 6 seconds. Things are still close, though!
Tour de France - Stage 17 1 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | 5h31'28 | 2 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | + 5 | 3 | Nairo Quintana | Movistar Team | s.t. | 4 | Chris Froome | Team Sky | + 27 | 5 | Esteban Chaves | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 6 | Alberto Contador | Tinkoff - Saxo | + 57 | 7 | Simon Spilak | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 8 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 1'01 | 9 | Tejay Van Garderen | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | 10 | Rigoberto Urán | Lotto Belisol | s.t. |
And we take the Maillot Jaune back! Porte leads the classification with 16 seconds on Costa!
Tour de France - Stage 18 1 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | 5h54'56 | 2 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | + 11 | 3 | Carlos Betancur | Movistar Team | s.t. | 4 | Nairo Quintana | Movistar Team | s.t. | 5 | Chris Froome | Team Sky | + 49 | 6 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | + 1'23 | 7 | Jurgen Van den Broeck | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 8 | Alberto Contador | Tinkoff - Saxo | + 2'04 | 9 | Rohan Dennis | Garmin Sharp | s.t. | 10 | Diego Ulissi | Lampre - Merida | s.t. |
Damn, we lost it again, and hard this time!
The GC top 3 before the final 3 stages, including a Time Trial:
1 | Rui Costa | Lampre - Merida | 78h16'05 | 2 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 25 | 3 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | + 58 |
Tour de France - Stage 19 1 | Mark Cavendish | Team Sky | 4h14'59 | 2 | André Greipel | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | 3 | Matthias Vleminckx | Orica GreenEdge | s.t. | 4 | Barry Markus | ASUS | s.t. | 5 | Danny Van Poppel | Wanty - Groupe Gobert | s.t. | 6 | Alexander Kristoff | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 7 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ.fr | s.t. | 8 | Kris Boeckmans | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | 9 | Luka Mezgec | Tinkoff - Saxo | s.t. | 10 | Adrien Petit | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | s.t. |
Another podium for me. I have survived the mountains quite well, it seems. At least better than expected.
Tour de France - Stage 20 1 | Tony Martin | BMC Racing Team | 1h03'08 | 2 | Michał Kwiatkowski | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 7 | 3 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Belkin Pro Cycling Team | + 17 | 4 | Rohan Dennis | Garmin Sharp | + 21 | 5 | Richie Porte | Orica GreenEdge | + 26 | 6 | Geraint Thomas | Team Sky | + 32 | 7 | Chris Froome | Team Sky | + 39 | 8 | Cameron Meyer | Orica GreenEdge | + 41 | 9 | Peter Velits | BMC Racing Team | + 42 | 10 | Zdenek Stybar | ASUS | + 43 |
And this molds the General Classification in its final place. But, first, up to the Champs!!!
Tour de France - Stage 21
Could I stunt on the Champs-Elysées? I wasn't feeling very fresh anymore, but was anyone? I would give it my all! But mostly I was just happy to be here, I made it to Paris!

Well, I have to say I didn't really expect to win on the Champs. All in all, I can look back on a very successful Tour de France. I made my debut here at age 24 and I did it with flying colors. I made it on the podium almost 8 times and I won a stage. What else could I have asked for? No, I return home a happy, tired man.

Hey, we got a prize! Ritchie Porte finishes on the podium after his 4th place last year. We're very happy for him, he worked real hard for it! And, of course, taking the Team Classification home is an amazing bonus for our Australian team.
This was good. I finally made my acquaintance with the Tour de France. At some times I felt it would kill me, but it brought me incredible sweetness in stage 13.
It's an experience I'll never forget.
Matt

Very, very strong Tour de France, especially if it's your first one. How many can say that they won a stage in there first TdF?
Happy to see that Kwiatkowski won the GC (If it wasn't Porte )

Great TdF for the team with a lot of podiums, the 3rd place in GC and the team classification.
And not forget Matt's first GT stage win of many.
The pics from the Champs Elysees are so awesome that I want to play the stage now, too.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Wow, what a Tour for Matt! A win, young jersey for a while, and quite good in the points classification too. He did well in the tricolore.
Also, why exactly did Tony Martin win in front of home crowds? Did the Germans fall back in to the habit of annexation, or why exactly is Strasbourg German?
