Who's your biggest dissapointment this year? I think I have to say Cunego. I was expecting a little bit more from him. I hardly noticed that he was even in the Vuelta.

Well, Basso came into form much faster than him, after a longer suspension. He top 5ed two GTs in his first season.
Huh, so he did, my memory of Basso in 09 was that he was really disappointing.
He was in a way. The reason was that we were comparing him to the alien freak he was before his suspension.

Actually Basso's layoff was shorter and he had raced in late 2008. Don't underestimate that.
Also, compare his 2009 to 2010 and you see he didn't come back to top level in 2009.

Hmm... dutch riders did decent, although they couldn't keep up with the real top... Not that I expected that, but a top 5 would be realistic.
A little bit dissappointed with Mollema, I think he wasn't fully recovered from the fall in TdF.
I agree, good ride of Valverde, and ofc Rodriguez.
Gesink has been thrown back to around his 2008 level by breaking his leg. So he lost about 3 years of progress. So any GT win will probably be impossible until he is 30+ yo now. |

I was expecting this performance, Cunego had around 60 race days coming to the Vuelta, and he had shown already good form in the begining of the season, so I guess he just came here fatigued.

De Gendt, Cunego and Henao. I hoped that De Gendt to finish in the top 10, wich he didn't. Cunego was really bad, if he didn't was on the startlist I wouldn't know he was here and Henao came here to help Froome, and eventually made a horrible Vuelta where I expected him to finish at least top 15, wich he didn't. |

Henao actually finished 14th in GC. Adding to that it's his first full racing year in Europe, plus having raced the Ardennes + Giro in top shape. I'd say that's quite good result for Henao. Nothing disappointing.

Henao?
He hasn't been bad at all. He fully dedicated himself to helping Froome. He sat in the Top 10 himself too during the first two weeks, but eventually lost places due to being caught behind in an echelon and having to wait for a fading Froome.

Cataldo (because I wanted him to finally have a decent 2 GT Season), Cobo, Anton, and a lot of sprinters.

I have to say that Tiago Machado and Manuel Cardoso have disappointed me, talking about national riders.

I know this isn't what you mean, but hey, he did take his first Grand Tour win, plus it's his best Vuelta placing since he started riding the Giro-Vuelta. Ok, maybe I'm trying to look on the bright side.

Yes. The Japan Cup.
And I wouldn't say he was (significantly) better in 2010 than in 2009. The field in the 2010 Giro wasn't really that impressive, apart from Evans.

I didn't actually do that, did I? I apologize.
I guess I have to comment on the Vuelta now, so a question. Taking into consideration that point in time when the J-Rod-Valverde gap was announced as 1'14" today (at least the Brit Eurosport announcers said as such), and how for that moment it seemed like J-Rod was going to jump back up to 2nd and possibly give a faltering Contador a run for his money...has there been a better GT in recent memory??? I think the '03 Tour definitely was (especially with Lance trying to tie Indurain w/ five in a row), but...any since? Amazing course, amazing field, crazy back and forth racing. Three of the best weeks of bike racing I've ever witnessed.

You didn't? Wow, it must be me being obtuse then, I don't get what you meant by that?

Just in the last 3 years, I'd say Giro 09, 10 and 11, and Tour 10. Tour 11 would be close, but probably better as well. Vuelta 09 was better too. I think this Vuelta is the most overrated GT ever, although it's not surprising considering how crap Giro and Tour have been this year, and that many people missed AC.

It's a line that you often use when you make a really stupid mistake, and am kind of in disbelief about it yourself.
I completely disagree. This Vuelta had a great four- then three-way battle for the victory. A solid class of second tier riders, and a crazy route that somehow managed to not be extremely entertaining and difficult without reaching the point where it was actually causing the quality of the races to go down (i.e. 2011 Giro). I don't think any of the ones you've mentioned hold a candle to it (especially the 2010 Tour, I hated that race). |
