Liquigas needs to make the race as hard as possible. That's the only way Basso can win this year's Giro. If they don't pace, Basso's competitors will be fresher on the final stages, where Basso is meant to leave everyone else behind. And the chance for dropping Scarponi, Rodriguez, and all the others on Stelvio is bigger if they're ("more) tired going into that stage.

It's not just that. Basso, like Sastre, only does well in very hard stages. If the stage isn't very hard the whole way, or is short, he'll get dropped.....just like Sastre.
