Nice ride, Hesjedal lost a place, but Boom's performances were incredible. Nice ones. |

Thanks all. Was a good race.
The Gent–Wevelgem is a Flanders Classics cycle road race held in Belgium including two ascents of the cobbled, difficult, and often selective Kemmelberg with lots of wind and rain. The event was first run in 1934.
Record champs with 3 wins are Robert Van Eenaeme (BEL), Rik Van Looy (BEL), Eddy Merckx (BEL) and Mario Cipollini (ITA).
Johan Vansummeren won the in 2010 and 2011 and could join them.
Result in 2012
| 1 | Bernhard Eisel | Team HTC - Highroad | | 2 | Juan Antonio Flecha | Sky Professional Cycling Team | | 3 | Stijn Devolder | Quick Step - Innergetic | | 4 | Filippo Pozzato | Astana | | 5 | Kevyn Ista | Cofidis, le Credit en Ligne | | 6 | Sébastien Rosseler | Team RadioShack | | 7 | Tom Boonen | Quick Step - Innergetic | | 8 | Fabian Cancellara | Leopard Trek | | 9 | Anthony Geslin | FDJ | | 10 | Thor Hushovd | Team Katusha |
The Garmin trio splitted on the hilly area and although they came back short to the finish it was nowhere close to a top10 result.
Garmin squad 2013

Maaskant will lead us as one of the worlds top cobbler in the abstinence of Haussler. Vansummeren proved with his two wins that he is a serious contender for this kind of races.
Felline and Van der Velde have small outsider chances but will mainly have to support. Farrar is a option for a slow race with a sprint finish in the end, while Meyer is just taking care on the first race half.
A top 5 is surely wanted by us although we just participate with a reduced squad here.

* Ballan, Boasson Hagen, Chainel, Vanmarcke, Rosseler
Without big cobblers by Leopard (Cancellara, Guldhammer), Liquigas (Gilbert, Nuyens) and Garmin (Hausller) some of the biggest favourites are missing. Still the start list is pretty tough with Boonen being the clear favourite. |

Great Criterium for you, Hesjedal in his shape did well enough and your TT rider's got the job done. Overall, great three days.
Gent is a tough one, almost every time it finishes in sprint, so will be tough for Maaskant to win, but definitely Top 5/3 is possible.

Good luck! Its nice to see Felline as I forgot you had him. He's one of my favourite riders, since I like Italians I've noticed. Maybe Vansummeren can pull off the breakaway victory.

Great wins by Boom at CI, he is a TT monster, also good final placement of Hesjedal. Good luck for GW, it will be tough against Boonen

Thanks all.
@ Alakagom: I know. This is why I am still annoyed about sending Haussler to the wrong race...
@ valverde321: I also like him. Thats why I signed him after the first season. And he really improved well.
@ all: Indeed Boonen is the big favourite. Will be hard to beat him, but see yourself...
Gent - Wevelgem

It`s surely the "easiest" of the 3 Flanders Pro Tour Classics with just a very few pavement sections. Still the steep hills will bring some splits. Garmin must try to get rid of most sprinters on these climbs.

A huge group of weak cobblers attacked early today. Mainly helpers, who get their freedom today.

Omega (Vanmarcke) and wild card team Veranda`s (Scheirlinckx) make the pace with most of their riders.

The breakaway reaches the first cobbles of the day. Thanks to the good weather it`s better to ride luckily for them.

Also Sky (Flecha/Hagen) and Quickstep (Boonen) are chasing the group now. The gap is not too big but still a dangerous situation with so many riders being ahead.

Half of the stage the weather totally turned around. Dark clouds and lots of rain now. And yes, it`s a Garmin rider again. Who would have expected anything else???
It`s our luxury helper Van Der Velde with the crash. Unfortunately he won`t be able to come back this race.

The peloton is down to ~40 after the first hilly part. Still lots of Garmin riders in there as also all other big cobblers.

Just 3 riders are left in the breakaway. None of them is really a danger.

Pozzato himself is leading the group over the second cobbled section. This is incredibly fast now and many riders struggle behind.

And something happened that wasn`t supposed to happen. Similar situation than last year with Maaskant and Felline fall back on this climb.

At least Vansummeren was able to hang on with the very best where Sky is doing a high pace now.

Felline did a great job bringing Maaskant back to this group with 10km to go. This was a suberb work by the young Italian.

Boonen sees that one of his biggest opponents is coming back and attacks immediately.

Devolder, Flecha and Breschel immediately follow him with the Garmin riders just need a moment to relax.

But with 5km to go Pozzato attacks and this time Maaskant follows him.

The Belgium still has a nice gap to Flecha next aiming another win here.

Behind these two it`s Pozzato starting the sprint from the first position.
Vanmarcke, Maaskant, Devolder and Breschel are following him.

Another group behind it`s Scheirlinckx leading out Boasson Hagen, Vansummeren and Felline.

But no one was able to beat Tom Boonen today. He takes a nice solo win. Well deserved.
Also Flecha is able to hold on to his 2nd.

Pozzato had no problems to sprint on the 3rd with Maaskant closely outsprinting Vanmarcke for 4th. Devolder 6th ahead of a tired Breschel in the end.

Boasson Hagen takes the 8th ahead of 2 time winner Vansummeren, Scheirlinckx and Felline just outside the top 10 but a big factor for Maaskant`s 4th today.
In general a good team result although we hoped for a podium.

Lovely screen Imo, it was a good result, considering that Maaskant fell back. Felline is doing an awesome job! Oh, and a small thing: The 15th screen is the same as the 14th.

It was some incredible work Felline did there bringing Maaskant back into the game, and good to see that Maaskant didn't let him down and ended in 4th

It's not easy to win Gent-Wevelgem but nice 4th place with Maaskant! Although it's always a good thing for me to see Tommeke Boonen win a race!
RIP Wouter Weylandt, siempre con noi

Thanks jona777.
Lots of Garmin action in March winning the Drieedaagse Van West-Vlaanderen and some top 5 results in stage races.
Pro Tour
Cadel Evans had an awesome spring so far winning Tirreno Adriatico and runner-up in Catalunya. Surely a deserved ranking lead.
Heinrich Haussler being our best here as 5th after winning the Tour Down Under.
Sky is dominating the team ranking in especially after Bennati`s win in San Remo but also due to Boasson Hagen`s strong results so far.
Garmin being second is also a great result.
Continental Tour
Gerald Ciolek had an awesome February and still leads the ranking ahead of his team mate Veelers, who had some nice classic results in March.
Nevertheless one team was stronger than Skil-Shimano. Landbouwkredit is leading the team ranking due to Traksel`s constancy in the one day classics with the highlight win in Hel Van Het Mergeland, De Waele`s win in the Tour de Mediterraneen and Scheirlinckx success in Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne.
CQ-Ranking
Two Australians on top of the ranking with Evans and Garmin`s Haussler. Also Sanchez on 5 and Maaskant as 15 show a strong Garmin performance in 2013 so far.
Who else should lead the team ranking then. Clear domination by our guys and almost twice as much as runner-up Sky.
Awards
No question the March award has to go to Evans, who obviously has a real boost after his team change to Movistar, when he left Leopard Trek, where he had 2-3 better guys ahead.
The Youth award goes to Caja Rural`s De la Parte, who had some decent results in Catalunya.
Big highlights in April surely the 6 classics. 3 Vlaanderen and 3 Ardennes. But also the Pais Vasco with Roche in preparation on the Ardennes and the Giro preparation Trentino and Romandie with Martin are nice races.
The wild card for the 2013 Giro d`Italia are officially announced. Actually no big surprises and the 4 expected teams will add the 18 Pro Tour teams.
Colnago around Pozzovivo, Mollema and Modolo get the first spot as they have top 10 contenders, U25 contenders and a good sprinter.
Geox has Rujano, who always did well here. But also Cobo, Valls, Duarte and Sastre are good for results.
Farnese-Vini might go for stage wins as neither Visconti nor Failli is expected to do well in the high mountains. Also Gatto and Guardini are stage specialists as pure sprinters.
Acqua & Sapone gets the final spot. It will be hard to get a top15 in the overall but having one of the best Italian sprinters in Napolitano they surely deserve this spot.
So no wild cards for Caja Rural, United Healthcare, BMC and Saur Soyasun.
It will be interesting to see the final line-ups. |
