Argh, stop updating so quickly. Guys like me have to catch up with so much, because I'm not on European time Pfft

But regardless I'm loving these reports. Best of luck with the signings.

Very good 2nd of Kittel! Its a pity that the victory has escaped for so little, but we have to be satisfied with the work of the team in this race.

I'm looking forward to the Alps to look how fight the favorites. I hope you can get some points for the KoM Wink

A greeting and much good luck!

Stage 17
Gap - Pinerolo
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17.png

Pretty much the same kind of the stage as yesterday's. Some more climbing today tho, with the riders passing over both the Montgenèvre pass and over Sestrière, before descending down all the way to the finish line in Pinerolo and Italy. The last climb up to Pramartino might be very interesting, and encourages to attacks between the fav's. Interesting day ahead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_1.jpg

Ten riders in the early break. The names were Pauriol (FDJ), Cusin (Cofidis), Leukemans (Vacansoleil), Christensen (Saxobank), Charteau (Europcar), Navardauskas (Garmin), Barredo (Rabobank), Stybar (Quickstep) and our duo Geniez and Bonnin.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_2.jpg

At the early slopes of the Montgenèvre, Bradley Wiggins was off in pursuit of them, once again trying to take back the time his crash costed him. Leopard seemed fine with that and allowed the Briton to go.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_3.jpg

Wiggins caught the front group as we started climbing up to Sestrière, and was soon alone up front after dropping the early escapees one by one. Bonnin felt good today and was one of the guys who managed to stay with Wiggins for quite a long time, before eventually getting tailed off together with Barredo and Pauriol.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_4.jpg

Bonnin kept cool though and recovered a bit, enough to pass through Sestrière as second, taking over the KoM jersey from Kessiakoff. Wiggins had rampaged up this climb, and was already over five minutes ahead!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_5.jpg

Bonnin's group was finally caught by the peloton just before we started the day's last climb, the Pramartino. No monster pace in the pack from Leopard though, and Wiggins was still holding on to his five minute advantage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_6.jpg

Many of the favourites started to get worried now, and already at the first metres of the climb, Cadel Evans decided to close down the Sky rider himself by attacking. Pretty much all other favourites were onto this move immediately, including Andy Schleck.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_7.jpg

After that we got series of unsuccessful attacks from all the favourites, none of them able to create a gap. Therefore a bigger group containing all Top 10 riders but Kruijswijk passed over the top together, just a minute behind Wiggins.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_8.jpg

Speaking of Wiggins, he (surprise, surprise) held his advantage in the tricky descent and stayed on his bike the whole way down to Pinerolo, where he could celebrate a magnificent stage win after a brilliant solo ride. Well deserved after his brave attack.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_17_9.jpg

The favourite group crossed the line just a minute behind Wiggo, after reducing his advantage by four minutes up the last, short climb. No major changes in the GC today, just Kruijswijk dropping out of the Top 10 because of a big time loss here.
A good day for us though, with regained control over the Polkadot jersey.

Not a good day today but Bonnin still in the Polka Dot jerseyWink

Alakagom
Great ride by Bonnin, but this is going to be so close. Everything really depends will Kessiakoff attack in any of the two days remaining. Should be very interesting.

Next two days will be massive though, can't wait for Klöden - Schleck battle, although all in Top 5 have decent chance to win. Should be epic too Pfft

Nice win by Wiggo, still Löfkvist the man for Sky Pfft

Oh yeah! Sensational Bonnin recovering the KoM. The team keeps on giving samples of a high quality.

Impressive the first stage of the Alps with an attack to the ancient custom for Wiggo. I want to see that the tomorrow stage provides us.

Magnificent reports, I never get tired of reading to you Wink

Polka would be very nice in Paris but with summit finishes on Galibier and Alpe it's almost impossible. Maybe when you win on one of those you can hold it to Paris but that would be a miracle! Grin

@ all: Thanks a lot. It's great to get so many comments all the time.

@ alakagom: I'm also looking forward to it. It's just too bad there hasn't been any bigger gaps at all so far. And Löfkvist always the man. Pfft

@ tmobile: Extra thanks for commenting on the reports.

And just to annoy valverde, here's another report. Pfft

pcmdaily.com/images/flags/FR.png 21.07.2011: Tour de France

Stage 18
Pinerolo - Col du Galibier / Serre-Chevalier
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18.png

Together with tomorrow, the hardest stage in this Tour. Three major climbs, Agnel, Izoard and Galibier, on the menu, with the finish on top of the Galibier, 2600 metres over sea level. The second last chance for the pure climbers to shake up the GC before the decisive time trial in Grenoble in two days.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_1.jpg

To our frustration, Peter Velits attacked early in the stage, setting up a hard pace preventing any others from joining him. This destroyed our plan today slightly, as we had hoped to collect maximum points on both Agnel and Izoard.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_2.jpg

Chasing Velits was Damuseau, El Fares (Cofidis), Paterski (Liqugias) and Bonnin. Or the latter wasn't chasing actually, just sitting at the back of the group, saving energy for later in the stage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_3.jpg

To anger us even more, Bradley Wiggins decided to go for another early attack, blasting away from the peloton up the Agnel. Richie Porte tried to go with him, but was soon forced to take his own pace.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_4.jpg

Velits passed over the Agnel first, a full five minutes ahead of Wiggins. Bonnin tried to come around his companion Porte for third, but cracked in the final kilometer of the climb and had to settle for fourth. Still not bad, considering it gave him a lot of important points.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_5.jpg

About halfway up the Izoard, Bonnin just exploded after trying to follow Porte for way too long. Still a good gap down to the next chasers, giving him a good chance to stay ahead for another fourth place.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_6.jpg

At the front of the race, Wiggins had closed down Velits' five minute advantage, forming a duo as téte de la course. At the top they had a huge advantage over Porte, and a gigantic over the peloton.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_7.jpg

Bonnin had to dig up every little piece of energy from his body after running out of green bar near the top of the Izoard, and found just enough power to pass the top as fourth, increasing his KoM lead over Kessiakoff. The peloton reached the top a few minutes behind Bonnin, and a quarter behind the two leaders, putting Wiggins in provisional yellow!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_8.jpg

Wiggins and Velits passed under the twenty kilometres to go banner with a still very big lead, but now reduced to eight minutes thanks to great work by Leopard and Radioshack. Still enough for Wiggins to grab yellow, but the gap were still decreasing.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_10.jpg

As the final climb started to show some gradient, Velits cracked completely, starting to rock his shoulders in tiredness. Wiggins was still looking as good as ever though, keeping his lead pretty well.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_11.jpg

It took all the way until five kilometres to go before we finally got some attacks from the pack. Igor Anton was the first to move, drawing Klöden, Scarponi and Gesink with him in the acceleration, while Schleck stayed cool inside the group.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_12.jpg

As usual, the attacks had no effect and eleven riders formed a favourite group. Those in it were: Klöden, Schleck A, Anton, Gesink, Scarponi, Mollema, Evans, Rodriguez, Schleck F, Basso and Niemiec. Two top ten riders were missing, Löfkvist and Van den Broeck.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_13.png

They could never reach the front of the race though, and Bradley Wiggins could solo over the line for a second consecutive day, picking up his second Tour stage win and gaining back even more time on his rivals. This time he was so tired that he couldn't even raise his arms in celebration as he finished.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_14.jpg

An interesting tendency started to appear as the other favourites launched the final sprint. Gesink, Anton and Klöden started to gap Andy Schleck slightly! Maybe a sign of weakness from Schleck?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_15.jpg

Definitely not. Schleck easily closed the gap, and at the line it was Klöden who lost time to Andy instead of the way around. Gesink and Anton stayed ahead of Andy tho, and gained a few seconds on the Luxer.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_16.jpg

A little bit behind them came Rodriguez, Niemiec, Mollema and Evans, who all lost pretty much all chance of winning this Tour. Weird how Evans could get so weak after looking so strong in the first week.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_18_17.jpg

After those four we had in this order: Basso, Frank Schleck, Kessiakoff, Scarponi, Pinot, Löfkvist, Van den Broeck and Porte. These all lost quite a bunch of time in the end, after being distanced with just a kilometer to go.

You linked me, to myself Pfft

Good reports again!

Bonnin looks good for the KoM, and props since I found its much harder in 11 (in my 3 races, I was able to do, when the game randomly decided to work) Pfft

A great report that does the justice to this stage Smile

WTF, is Wiggo on EPO ? Pfft Although I can still repeat this line still Löfkvist the man for Sky Pfft

Great ride by Bonnin, its great lead now. I am already praying Wiggo won't go on attack tomorrow, but we never know with him now Pfft My second worry is Anton, he is looking great and he can grab lots of points tomorrow. Hopefully Bonnin has still some energy left to try something tomorrow, going to be tough, but we believe in you Smile

Wiggins winning two mountain stages in a row? WOW

Great attacking from Bonnin. Attacking over the Telegraph and Galibier will certainly be possible. Go for the KoM!
