All that work by BMC during the race and they couldn't even get within the top 10, Philippe Gilbert having a great time (not) contesting stages he has decided to try and target.

Have a feeling Mathews might be a little tired right now and that sprint did suit Gerrans if he is feeling good
Bit of news going around that Matthews might have been suffering from some allergy problems today, and he was back at the race doctor's car at least once during the stage.

Maybe, but he did win stage 6 last year and from memory it had a higher gradient at the finish. Although the sprinting competition wasn't as fierce.

Yes apparently an allergy for Matthews but if he was good enough for the leadout (which judging by Twitter he was?) then you would have thought he'd be fine to sprint.
Naturally my consternation has nothing to do with me having him in my Velogames team |

We both have him in our teams
You can still do a lead out if not 100% but lack the kick for a final sprint, if he was suffering from allergy issues then it's no shock he lead Gerrans out

90% Matthews scores me more points than a 100% Gerrans
Granted they are in the best position to make the call and OGE have plenty of success in spreading the wins around. To be honest this was more the final straw of the most boring day at work ever (and that's saying something). Checked Twitter after annoyingly missing the stage and was like Ulissi, Gerrans??? |

Ulissi really saved Lampre's butts there. Modolo gets swamped and you immediately see Ulissi appear from nowhere on the other side. |

Very proud of Contador that he has made it through today. Ulissi with another win in his Giro palmares, I can't think of a rider who is more perfectly suited as a rider for stage hunting in Giro in recent years? Lobato second, very good.

Just thinking out aloud here, I wonder if Portes teammates are fully committed to burying themselves for him. If I were a teammate I would ride for my leader but if he was sleeping away from the team every night like Porte I don't know if I'd absolutely bury myself for him. I get the logic as to why Sky would try this but it does absolutely nothing to foster a strong united team atmosphere
I wouldn't want to bury myself for a guy either who throws it all away in third week because of a bad day hihihi No but seriously, I think SKY is smart. They have Viviani for stage wins too and third week is when it matters for Porte to have helpers. Don't forget, SKY had not a single GT stage win last year. I think they have learned from that.
But yeah surely some weird thing like that van doesn't help team spirit but that doesn't mean that it harms it either. They are grown man after all. Well, at least some of them.

I thought that a ban would maybe stop Ulissi, but apparently not.

So f******* Ulissi won the stage? I think this is all the proof you need for extended drug bans- nine montths for PED- I know it was a TUE, but he took double the required amount- is ridiculous.
Disclaimer- Most of my posts are me thinking aloud. And most of what I think is rubbish.

How is winning a stage on a slight uphill finish, that is great suited to his abilities and rider profile due to his kick, proof of anything? There's proof and there's just things that people like to see as proof. I don't intend to defend him and the whole Ulissi case has been a huge farce but yesterday's win wasn't exactly surprising nor earthshattering.
EDIT: Okay, wait a second. The stage has been the longest of the Giro and he has been known for his drop in performance when it comes to longer stages. Uhm, okay, so it's probably surprising.
