The Introduction

The 3 day CT stage race around the south of Italy is not one of our bigger targets, but is a good race to wake up the legs after winter, in the heat of the region.

Our team is built around Hilly-Sprint specialist, Freddie Rodriguez, along with co-leader José Serpa. Serpa isn't in great form currently, so Freddie will be our main man, with the target of a stage win, (Day 2 looks the best put together for him, as he can get over the climbs, and then sprint for the line.)

Day one was where the race was decided last year, and where Chad Beyers potential really came through, after he got into the decisive late move, and grabbed 4th overall in the GC.

Beyer is on a slightly different schedule to last year, where he focussed largely on the start of the season, so we might not get quite the same in terms of fireworks from Mr Voeckler-USA.

It's hard to predict where the decisive move will come, a similar collection of teams are riding, and it seems likely those late moves will be better marked this year, though equally, day 1 has the only summit finish, so it may prove to be the vital day!

Last Year

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/lastyear.jpg

Last year saw Arnoud Van Groen of Veranda Willems take and hold the leaders jersey from day 1. However, we will be seeing a completely new podium this season, as of the top5, only Chad Beyer returns this year!

The Startlist

A more powerful selection than last year held, we see many teams using this as a debut race for there signings, such as Tony Martin of Garmin, and Michele Scarponi of Katusha, each of whom are riding the Calabria!

Other favourites include ex italian NC Giovanni Visconti, Dries Devenyns and Tirreno-Adriatico winner Stefano Garzelli.

Our riders are given very small odds by the bookies, and a stage win will be hard, due to names such as Galimzyanov, Modolo and Guardini, all of whom are here to compete.

My Favourites for the overall race, are Pietropolli of Lampre, and Scarponi of Katusha.

Pietropolli finds himself with a leaders role, and showed good form in Australia, plus the course suits him, he's very similar to Freddie, so expect some aggressive riding by Lampre.

My second pick is Katusha leader Scarponi, he's technically the best rider here, and does have a good team, but I suspect he will not yet be in the best of shapes, and the only summit finish is a bit short and sharp for him.

Edit:1000th post, didn't even realise! Woohoo, 4figures, almost all contained in my 2 stories Pfft

Stage 1

The biggest names in the break, which got away on attempt one, were Kristjan Koren and Sacho Modolo. The break very quickly built up a large lead, peaking at over 10minutes.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-79.jpg

Lampre and Farnese Veni were the teams who set about reeling in the group, the gap started to come down, 3'13 with 35km left to ride. Clearly Pietropolli and Visconti were feeling good, as both teams had almost every rider working on the front.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-63.jpg

In a similar fashion to last year, a couple of the favourites made an attack with around 30km left, this time, Lampre kept the pace high, Nocentini and Garzelli were quickly brought back into the peloton, though the gap wouldn't fall, being held at around 2'46.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-65.jpg
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-66.jpg

Seeing an opportunity for the win, the break started to break up, with 10km to go, Modolo made an attack (clearly he's in great form, he dropped some stronger climbers!) and opened a gap of around 12" to the break, and 1'35" on the peloton.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-59.jpg

Rodriguez had arrived with some great legs, and with 10km to go, he made an attack out of the peloton, followed at around 7km by Daniel Pietropolli.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-58.jpg

As the slopes really started to ramp up, Freddie caught the original break, Pietropolli is just behind, but Modolo still has a 25" lead with 2.5km to go, can the better climbers pull him back on the ascent?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-70.jpg

As the riders enter the last 300m, Modolo looks like he's pedalling squares, Pietropolli opens his sprint, and despite his best efforts, Rodriguez can't follow, can Modolo hold off this surge? His legs must be screaming, but the end is in sight...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-71.jpg

It's a good job the line wasn't another 20m up the road, Modolo just watched his gap melt, but still managed to cling on to the line to take a fantastic stage from the breakaway!

Rodriguez came in 4th behind Hannes Blank, in a group of 4; 13" down on the first pair, the peloton follow at 40" so Rodriguez suddenly moves into contention for the GC!

It was interesting to see no activity from Scarponi or some of the other guys who might have pulled a gap today. Either they haven't yet got the form, or were caught napping by the Exxon-Lampre move remains unclear, but it does lead to some raised eyebrows!

I have him on my squad in PCM. That 60 can hurt the chances a little in the hill/mountain ratio has a little for mountain.

Stage 2

Day 2 of the 3 is once again fairly tough, no summit finish today, but the climb which finishes just 17km from the summit, could well prove to be the location of the decisive move.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/2-2.jpg

A 3 man break today, created by Quickstep leader, Dries Devenyns. They moved away after around 15km, on the first climb of todays difficult Par Cours, with a gap peaking at 7'25.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-64.jpg

Despite leading the race, it was still a surprise to see Colnago taking up the chase. Clearly they back Modolo to get over the climbs here!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-67.jpg

Right at the base of the climb, Devenyns decided to shed his companions from the break. The decision was probably motivated by the thundering pack, just 55" behind them.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-60.jpg

Into the final climb, and Scarponi comes to the front for Katusha. He's setting a blistering pace and quickly brings back all but Devenyns, as we see many riders falling out the back door.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-59.jpg

Around 2/3 of the way up the climb, he puts in a little dig, and reduces the group to just 15men, Rodriguez is just about hanging in there, but the pace is too high for him to be comfortable.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-72.jpg

Suddenly, when it looks like Scarpo is going to just shell everyone, 3 riders put in an attack and get away, Pietropolli goes for a second stage, taking with him Visconti of Farnese-Veni, and amazingly, Lloyd Mondory (the sprinter!)

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-68.jpg

Scarponi is clearly feeling his own pace, and the group of 12 starts to slow, the other riders are unwilling to up the pace themselves, and the trio's lead continues to grow, Pietropolli decides to drop the rest, and as he comes over the summit, he digs again, riding away from his partners.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-54.jpg

Back in the group, no one was willing to work, and on the flat section at the top, the big 48man group behind, catches them. Rodriguez has nothing left in order to sprint for 4th, over a minute behind the front group!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-66.jpg

Pietropolli wins the second stage of Giro Della Region De Calabria, and with it moves into 1st place in the GC. Surprisingly, Modolo held with the main group a minute behind, but no one could get across to the front men, setting up Pietropolli as favourite for the GC.

A fact which seems reasonable, as he has looked very strong throughout the race, with 1st and 2nd so far.

Lets hope Freddy has a better day on stage 3 Wink

Stage 3

The final stage of this years race, has a fairly complex first half, before we finish with 25 flat kilometres, which should lead to an undecisive stage, and a big sprint finish.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/3-2.jpg

José Serpa got into the days 6 man breakaway group, along with Garmin TT specialist Cameron Meyer. The break got a 6minute lead at peak, but never threatened, and was brought back after the final climb.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-65.jpg

No action really occurred until the last 10km of the stage, so that's where I'll pick up the report...
With 10km to ride, 2 trains started to form. Beyer was trying his best to leadout Rodriguez, whilst Katusha put a train together with Farnese for Gatto and... Scarponi?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-61.jpg

7km to go, and our train is clearly the one people want to follow! Katusha have there sprinter on our wheel (Galimzyanov) behind him are Enrico Rossi, Lloyd Mondory and Petacchi.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-60.jpg

with 2.5km Fred Rodriguez was tiring, and was clearly out of contention against the more powerful sprinters on his wheel, Vacansoleil moved up in the last few kilometres as well, Romain Feillu was bringing Kenny Van Hummel forwards.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-71.jpg

Once the big sprinters launched, Frad faded badly, his GC place was consolidated, but we would sadly be leaving without our desired stage victory.

Rossi looked strongest with 1.1km left to ride, as Van Hummel got caught behind his own team mate...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-73.jpg

Rossi shows great power and takes it on the line. Pietropolli collects another 2nd place in this sprint, he's been great throughout this race.

Not a bad race for Freddie, altough not having a stage win.

baggieboys32

Not a major race, but we see 3 of our winter signings making there first appearance here, namely: Dombrowski, Van Garderen and Zirbel.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/squad-7.jpg

The first few stages are unimportant to us, there just about getting miles in the legs, but it'll be interesting to see how VG can do in the climb of Mt Faron on day 5, where the GC will probably be decided.

Movistar have to stand out as the oddest squad here, only 2 riders, but 2 very powerful ones, who could easily end up winning the Points and GC!

Some good climbers contest here, exactly what we want, as it gives a real test to our leader!

I can't see stage 4 and 5 profile.

Apart from that, nice preview!

Fixed it, had the wrong link Embarassed
Sorry it's far from my best intro, but it seemed a waste to do a huge into fro a tiny race where we're only interested in one stage

Stage 4

The second breakaway victory of the race, after no team chose to take on the chase them selves. VG is level with most of the favourites time wise at this point, so we'll see a showdown on Mt.Faron for the overall.

Tossato attacked late to join the breakaway, and was able to over power them in the finish, to become the new race leader.
