Stage 15, the stage the most cycling fans have waited for! The reason: The Alto de l'Angliru! The world's second toughest climb (the Zoncolan is the toughest one), the beast of Asturias....
There are a lot of attacks in the first part of the race, but no one can stay away. So when approaching the first Intermediate sprint, the pack is still together and Peter Sagan doesn't even has to sprint for the 6 points.
The peloton stays together in the ascend of today's first climb, the Alto de Tenebredo. Thiago Machado (Radio Shack) is the first one on the summit, followed Kanstantin Siutsou (HTC) and Wout Poels.
Finally a breakaway! After the first climb, 3 riders jump away and at the 2nd Intermediate sprint in Mieres, with 39km to go, Bruno Pires (Leopard) leads Maxim Ingliskiy (Astana) and Siutsou. The peloton follows at 3'00.
The 3 leaders keep their 3 minute lead in the appetizer for the Angliru, the Alto del Cordal. Siutsou is the first on the summit, followed by Pires and Iglinskiy.
One climb to go, the Alto de l'Angliru. The first 6 kilometres of this 12.5km climb are relatively easy, with an average gradient of 7%. But the horror starts in the second part. The last 6 kilometres have an average gradient of 13.1% with the steepest part, the Cueña les Cabres, having gradients up to 23%!
Siutsou and Pires easily drop Iglinksiy. Under the 10km mark, the lead is still 2'30.
But when GC-leader Robert Gesink settles himself in the lead of the peloton, the gap decreases rapidly. The pace of the Dutch rider is that high, that the others struggle and loose his wheel! With 6.5km to go, he joins with the 2 leaders and they have a gap of 27 seconds to the others!
No-one is surprised that Siutsou and Pires can't follow the pace of Gesink. The steep last 6 kilometres have begun and the gap between Gesink and the chasing group, led by Cunego and Mosquera, is 22 seconds.
The hardest part of the climb starts, La Cueña les Cabres. The gradient is u to 23.5% here.
There are cyclists all over the road, just trying to make another pedal. Luckily, it has stopped raining, because with a wet road, the back wheels would have slipped when the riders were standing on the pedals, that steep... Robert Gesink is also having difficulties. He tries to maintain his lead, so he has some energy left after the steep part. Cunego follows at '23, Mosquera, Menchov and Rodríguez at '35 and Sánchez and Vanendert at 1'01.
When the gradient starts to drop to an easy 12%, Gesink accelerates again. He feels he has some juice left in his legs and wants to increase the '27 gap to Cunego. The trio Rodríguez, Menchov and Mosquera follow at '52, Sánchez at 1'36 and Vanendert at 1'48.
He couldn't win at the Monte Zoncolan earlier this year in the Giro d'Italia, but Robert Gesink takes his 4th stage win this Vuelta on the Angliru. He truelly deserves his nickname the Condor of Varsseveld!! Cunego finishes 2nd at '48, Menchov, Rodríguez and Mosquera at 1'24, Sánchez at 2'15 and Vanendert at 2'46.

Today's winner, again... :
Word from the DS: It's too early to say that we have won the Vuelta, but it will be pretty difficult to loose it now. Of course we can loose time at the Pena Cabarga, or the stages in Basque Country. But loosing 3'24? Nah, I don't think so. Not with a Gesink in this form and his strong domestiques!
The same day as the Angliru, we also raced in Belgium for the Grote Prijs Jef Scherens.
Our team:
I simulated this Race (quick simulation). The reason was that this was the 3rd time I had to race on the same route (GP Pino Cerami, Druivenkoers and now GP Jef Scherens). And I simply didn't feel like doing it.
So here are the simulated results, and Niki Terpstra took his first win of the season.
Stage 16 from Villa Romana la Omeda to Haro, and the riders finally get an almost flat ride today. The peloton looks pretty exhausted after Lagos de Somiedo and the Angliru, so chances for a breakaway!
And we get a breakaway today. 10 riders find each other in the BOTD: Javier Aramendia (Euskaltel), Michael Barry (Sky), Mauro Da Dalto (Liquigas), Pablo Lechuga (Andalucia), Alberto Losada (Katusha), Jason McCartney (Radio Shack), Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin, Benjamín Noval (Saxo Bank), Timothy Roe (BMC) and Zdenek Stybar (Quick Step). With 35km to go, the lead is over 9 minutes. No team in the peloton wants to chase them, although HTC (Cavendish), Movistar (Rojas), Omega Pharma (Greipel) and Rabobank (Freire) don't have a rider in the leading group. We decide not to waste energy today, and let only 1 or 2 guys ride a bit on front of the peloton.
5 kilometres to go, and still no attacks out of the leading group. Are they all too exhausted, or do they all trust on their sprint? The peloton follows at 5'36.
The sprint has started, already in the ast kilometre, and Jason McCartney is in the lead, followed by Alberto Losada.
It is the 38-year-old veteran Jason McCartney who manages to stay in the lead and wins the stage for the troubled Radio Shack team (theur best placed rider in the GC is Zubeldia at place 37...). Losada finishes in 2nd and Stybar in 3rd.
4'02 behind, Mark Cavendish wins the sprint for the 11th place. Best placed rider from our team is Theo Bos in 17th place. Although this seemed like an easy stage, some top 20-riders loose time: Carlos Barredo (GC 13) 3'27 and Vasil Kiryienka (GC 11), Christophe Le Mével (GC 15) and Rafael Valls (GC 18) even 4'19. Because of this, Rob Ruijgh jumps to 12th and Wout Poels to 16th in the GC.

Today's winner:
Word from the DS: Nothing to mention.
Edited by dienblad on 28-10-2011 00:16
Stage 17 takes the riders from Faustino V to the summit of Pena Cabarga, the last mountain top finish of this Vuelta. The stage is 213km long and features 3 categorized climbs. The last 6km are uphill, with an average gradient og 9.2& and a maximum of 18%!
Early in the race, GC's number 6 Ezequiel Mosquera crashes and i a few minutes behind the peloton. He has the help from 2 domestiques, but the gap to the peloton is increasing to 6 minutes with 154km to go.
Wout Poels tries several times to get in a break, but everytime the peloton (Movistar and HTC) won't let him get away. This time he tries it with Johann Tschopp (BMC), but again no luck...
Kanstantin Siutsou (HTC) wins both KOTM-sprints (Portilo de Bustos and Purtillo de Lunada), but everytime the peloton, what is left of it, comes together. At the 2nd KOTM-sprint of the day, with 26km to go, Mosquera is already 11 minutes behind and surely will loose is 6th place and maybe the top 10.
35 cyclists are up front and ride to the town of Solares, to the foot of the Pena Cabarga.
The last climb of the day, the Pena Cabarga. It probably suits the puncheurs a little bit better than the real climbers, because it is only 6km long. But the gradient will cause some gaps, 9% average and up to 18-19% maximum!
The climb hasn't even started and Damiano Cunego attacks. Doing this in every final climb, it has only brought him one stage win and the 2nd place in the GC, but the fans love it. Joaquim Rodríguez reacts, while Gesink rides in his own pace.
With 4km to go, Rodríguez tries to attack. He and Cunego have a '30 gap to the Dutch GC-leader.
But Purito has overestimated his strength and is passed by both Cunego and Gesink in the next 2 kilometres.
Into the last kilometre and Cunego leads Gesink by '16. Rodriguez hangs on to the Dutchman. Jelle Vanendert is in 4th at '44.
Gesink is closing the gap to Cunego, but it probably won't be enough for his 5th stage win. Rodriguez looses time fast now and his '33 back 300 metres before the summit.
And Damiano Cunego takes his 2nd stage win in this Vuelta, finishing '8 before Gesink, '37 before Rodríguez and 1'15 before Vanendert. Ezequiel Mosquera looses 14'31 and drops to the 10th place in the GC.

Today's winner:
Word from the DS: The climb was too short today for Robert Gesink to get his 5th stage win. Cunego was very strong today and deserved to win.
Well guys, I'll be on a short weekend holiday with my family, so no more updates, probably untill monday. I'll go to the German Eifel, to eat some deer and boar, drink some (or more) wines and climb some hills with my road bike. Have a nice weekend!!
@ FuglsangxTH3: Thank you, think Gesink has it in the pocket!
@ tsmoha: The weekend in the Eifel was good. Good food, wine, weather wa slovely and I set a new personal speed record, going 75.7 km/h downhill (with the roadbike) (but to be honest, pretty scary on these small tubes....)
@ baia: thanks, also Vanendert surprises me. I have to ride a high dot (80-85) with him for the last 10km in a climb, but he can manage to ride long with a high heartbeat.
Probably some report coming later tonight, first play some stages!
Stage 18, and another dangerous and hilly one. Between the start in Solares and the finish in Noja (174,6), the riders have to face 4 categorized climbs, the last one 27km before the finish. This looks like a stage for a breakaway, or can one of the GC-riders surprise the others?
Wout Poels has told us, that he wants to focus on the KOTM-jersey, instead of a good GC-ranking. He doesn't care that much if he becomes 16th or 22nd in the GC, if he can get the first place in the KOTM-rankings. That's why he spends some energy on the first 2 climbs of the day, Puerto de Braguia and the Alto del Caracol, and gets the maximum points.
When the "peloton" enters Hermosa for the 2nd Intermediate sprint, there are only 37 riders left in the leading group. 3 riders of the top 20 are missing: Carlos Barredo (13th), Vasil Kiryienka (14th) and Christophe Le Mével (19th).
Only 24 riders cross the summit of the 3rd climb of the day, the Puerto de Alisas. José Herrada (Caja Rural), Rafael Valls (Geox) and Ezequiel Mosquera (Vacansoleil) lead the peloton.
On a non-categorized climb 34 kilometres before the finish, GC's number 3 Luis León Sánchez attacks. He creates a gap, but the others won't let him get away.
When the Puerto de Fuente las Varas, the last climb of the day, starts, Sánchez is caught. That is the sign for Joaquím Rodriguez to attack. Damiano Cunego is the first to react. 25km to go.
These changes in the pace, are too much for Jelle Vanendert. He has to let the others go, but because of his high own pace, he won't get far behind.
3 riders arrive on the summit with a small gap: Joaquím Rodriguez, Damiano Cunego and Robert Gesink. A group of 5, consisting of Denis Menchov, Luis León Sánchez, Ezequiel Mosquera and the Caja Rural duo José Herrada and Javier Moreno, are '42 behind. Rubén Plaza and Jelle Vanendert follow at 1'32.
In the descend, the 3 leaders don't want to work together. So the group of 5 and Plaza & Vanendert join them. 10km to go.
With 5 kilometres to go, Javier Moreno attacks. He creates a gap of '15, and gets caught with 2km to go. But the attack causes another splits, with Menchov, Sánchez and Vanendert being the victims.
Already in the last kilometre, 6 riders will sprint for the win. José Herrada is in the lead, followed by Cunego. Gesink knows that the Italian is the best sprinter and is on his wheel, but he probably won't overtake him. Also Rodríguez is coming from behind.
And Cunego takes his 2nd consequetive win, and the 3rd in this Vuelta. Rodríguez finishes in 2nd, Gesink in 3rd. Sánchez and Menchov loose '30, Vanendert 1'31 and his 6th place in the GC. Theo Bos struggles a lot in this stage, and barely finishes inside the time limit. But things look bad for the next 2 stages, as he is exhausted...

Today's winner:
Word from the DS: Gesink doesn't stand a chance in a sprint with Cunego and Rodríguez, so we are happy with the 3rd place. Too bad Vanendert droppes one place in the GC. 3 more stages to go.
