Too bad Roubaix didn't work out, but it was still a great spring classics campaign. Omloop, Kuurne, E3, and The Ronde! |

Too bad for Roubaix and Gent, but great everywhere except them. At least Matthias proved he should be part of the Worlds squad. |

Dippofix - Thanks a lot. Glad you liked the report. G - W is a tough one for Matthias. But I'm sure he will get it right one day. He still has many years left.
knockout - Next year the double would be nice the summer's success will depend much on the Tour. Hope it'll go well!
Selwink - Yeah
TimoCycling - Yeah, his form was decreasing just a week early.
Martial1 - I can't complain about that. If I can do the same next year, I'll be very happy
dark_x2012 - Yeah, definitely. Hopefully as the leader, but that's up to the national coach! |

Tour of Belgium 2016
After a long and hard needed break, I returned to racing in the Tour of Belgium. The plan was to use the Tour of Belgium to build up form for my first GT, the Tour de France.
In stage 2, I managed to take the victory on a cobbled stage, in front of Sep Vanmarcke, nonetheless. I wore the leader's jersey until the very final day, where I lost it on a Mur de Huy finish.

All in all a good experience and a stage win!
The Giro d'Italia came to an end, too. We scored two stage wins with Ewan and Matthews.

FFS how can you drop so much in form?! This should have been yours, Matt, especially cuz of last year. But next year will be another chance. For now, King of Flanders is a great title anyway, no need to make you Emperor of the Pave just yet.
How exactly did the group finish? Because it looks like a rather large group and don't tell me Matt has already developed some Boonen attitude where he doesn't sprint for mere race rankings.

I have never commented your story before, Ian, but now is as good as time as any, I guess.
I would like to thank you for writing a very interesting story that is definitely worth reading, and I would like to congratulate Matt for his great spring - clearly his best season so far with Omloop, Kuurne, E3, and Vlaanderens Mooiste. Furthermore, I like the fact that he has these off-days (Gent and PR), because it adds the necessary realism.
Also - and this is just a general comment - I do not have anything against him having a few incredibly seasons later on as long as you remember to have a few bad seasons as well. A season here and there with personal or professional problems where nothing works and he just cannot land that big win is something I find very realistic, nevertheless. I do, however, understand that tampering too much with his natural stat development can ruin the career for you (as well as deliberately not doing your best), and, in that case, it is obviously better not to do anything and just let things be. |

Mresuperstar - Seems like the only logical explanation
Shonak - Yeah, I didn't quite understand what happened at Roubaix either. Maybe I was a bit too lenient with his energy and he just burned out. King of Flanders is a great title to carry around for now
Matthias doesn't have that attitude No, he spend the last 10 km trying to catch the group with Roelandts, with Vanbilsen just lodged in his wheel. On the velodrome, Vanbilsen then outsprinted Matthias easily (no more bars left). Neither caught the group with Roelandts but Vanbilsen came close and Matthias followed after a few meters (completely empty) so they were given the same time.
sutty68 - Yeah, it was a good race, especially since it's just a race to build up form
VoetT - We're doing what we can
welker3257 - Fair schmair though it's good to see that Orica has build such a strong cobbled squad to surround Matthias!
The Blues - Thanks so much for your comment. The feedback is quite welcome. Of course, I know about the realism in having bad seasons and great seasons. I will try to get it into the story, too. But he has many seasons left in his career to do that. I also like that he has these off-days and I will keep them in the story, too. Though I'm also hoping to have a few monster seasons to make up for the worse seasons
Thanks for the support and feedback! |

That was a great classics season. He will totally dominate the next years. How about Grand Tours? Will our hero be contesting any GT this year? |

Tour de Suisse - Stage 1
The Tour de Suisse. It's always been hard for me to score a victory in this part of the season. Usually I'm stronger early in the season and then back again later. This year, I'll be riding the Tour, so I need to be good now! Let this be a test.
Profile
This isn't my kind of stage, with that slope finish. I'll just wait for the sprint stages to come, I guess.
Well... How a plan can change. I was at the start line when it suddenly struck me: this might be the last race where you'll wear this jersey. I mean, you never know. I felt obliged to show it, so I went into the attack!
And since I was already up front, why not fight for the mountain and sprint points? I was there anyway.
It was a fun day, a good training. But then we got caught and it went downhill pretty fast. Well, actually, it went uphill, so that's the reason I went downhill, see what I mean?
In the end, Uran was the strongest sprinter of the punchers.

I hope I can sprint tomorrow, since today's break took quite some effort...
See you then,
Matt |

Good to see Matt on the attack, showing off the tricolore. It is a different side of him that has not been shown too much
Who is the Sky rider is in this pic? What's the Nat Champ jersey?

I discovered this pearl this afternoon and read the whole thing and even though this story is made in a month or so I can't help but being dissapointed I have to wait for the next part I also really love the fact that you keep the stats of Matt a bit of a mystery, makes it more realistic because in my opinion cycling is maybe a more mental effort than a physical one I also never expected to enjoy the couple José de Cauwer and Roger de Vlaeminck this much, although I still prefer Michel Wuyts and José But yeah, keep doing this awesome story please! And obviously, Matt is the replacement of Tom Boonen:'Matthias, de nieuwe chou-chou van Vlaanderen'

VoetsT - I'm afraid so. Especially with Cavendish and Sagan here. Sagan is always there to take away the win for Matthias!
the_hoyle - Yeah, it's always nice to try and stay a bit multisided. He's been racing a lot of classics lately, but now he's showing he can do some other work, too.
About that jersey, that is Diego Milán, national champion of the Dominican Republic.
jona500 - Thanks so much for your comment. I'm glad you're enjoying the story so much! Well, maybe I'll do the next Championship with Michel Wuyts for you, then With Tom Boonen fading away, Matthias has come in at the perfect timing to conquer the hearts of 'de Vlamingen'!
As expected, these are busier days. I hope to continue the Tour de Suisse later today. However, I'm more keen to get to the NC and then the Tour, so I might simulate the rest of the Tour de Suisse, or at least play it quickly and summarise it in one post. |

Great to see the King of Flanders (...yes, I'm totally calling him that all the time) so active in a stage race like the Tour de Suisse.
