Exxon-Walmart | The Stories End...

Stage 2

This looks to be much flatter around the finish, so expect Farrar to be up there, along with Greipel, Petacchi and Davis. We may look for a breakaway if someone has good legs, to try and protect the KOM jersey.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/2-1.jpg

The peloton didn't really put up a fight this morning and the break got away at the first attempt, including our youngest team member, Shy Vogel.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-62.jpg

The sprints were uncontested out in front, Quinziato and Bonnin won one sprint each to collect 6 points a piece. The gap was starting to look more threatening, and Omega-Pharma Lotto upped the pace for there sprinter André Greipel.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0015-42.jpg

With 18km to go, the gap to the Pack was dwindling, and Francsico Aramendia and Mathieu Perget attacked out of the break, Shy Vogel followed, and the three had a small gap with 12km left.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0016-44.jpg

Still feeling strong, Vogel made a second attack, dropping his two remaining companions! Could this be the first win in what us setting up to be a magnificent career?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0017-35.jpg

Not quite... 3.8km to go, Vogel runs out of gas. Still a great effort from the young rider, in his first full season as a rider.

Hincapie and Rodriguez set up Farrars train, and start pulling him forwards, whilst a second train forms across the road.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0018-33.jpg

Hincapie is looking to be a great signing for Exxon, not only will he be a valuable asset in the Flanders classics, he is making a powerful leadout man, and we get right to the front with 2km left...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0019-39.jpg

With 1.2km to go, Rodriguez has just opened up his sprint as final leadout, the main train has already fired, can Farrar come past them for the teams first win in new colours?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0020-21.jpg

Yes! He holds out against Aussies Goss and Davis to take the win, whilst Rodriguez claims another top10! With his stage win, comes the Ochre jersey for tomorrows stage as well!

There it is, what a sprint!

Indeed, I thought we'd been far too long without an Exxon victory (La Vuelta) So it was nice to see Farrar come out on top for us again Grin

And agreed Fcancellara, I think it looks great in the game Grin
(Good thing about the white XX otherwise it looks a bit like Astana!) Pfft

I actually confused the two at first while looking for a pale red jersey before I realised. Pfft

Stage 3

The first thing worth noting today, is that the teams have all changed to there 2012 season jerseys! Today was the deadline for new kits, and most of the PT and CT have had a change of kit.

Stage 3 is the first day which might have an effect on the GC. The profile is still relatively flat, but 3 laps of the finishing loop, before an uphill sprint to the line, might be enough to tire some riders out.

We're going to working for Fred Rodriguez today. Tyler Farrar isn't in great shape, and the finish doesn't suit him, our other goal is of course to protect Tylers Ochre jersey!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/3-1.jpg

The race kicked off in usual fashion, with the break going early. We didn't enter the break today, as we wanted to keep men around Freddie and Tyler.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-60.jpg

Once again, we were forced to play a large part in the chase. Garmin helped us out, and together we started to reel in the breaks large advantage.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-60.jpg

With 15km to go, the break had 2'15" still as a gap. Michael Freiberg of Fly-V Australia decided he had the legs, and attacked his breakaway companions, to try and give the Australian CT team, a WT victory in there home nation!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-66.jpg

Seeing this attack, we decided to use Tyler to try and bring them back for Freddie, and to keep his jersey away from the break.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-68.jpg

The breaks lead quickly came down once Tyler picked up the chase, and with 10km to go it was back together. This sparked a fresh wave of attacks started by Bert De Waele of Landbouwkrediet, followed by Riccardo Riccó and Fred.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-51.jpg

With just 2km to go, De Waele had a small gap to the pack, but he'd been put in quite a long dig, so he may be running out in the legs...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-63.jpg

Under the flamme rouge, it's all but back together, Rodriguez is in 5th as the sprint opens, but he's also running on nearly empty. meanwhile, Hesjedal, is coming forward, tracked by Pietropolli and Carlos Barredo

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-63.jpg

400m... De Waele is still just hanging on, but Barredo has really powered up the hill, Hesjedal is following him, whilst Rodriguez is starting to fade.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-51.jpg

Barredo takes it on the line, drawing level with Farrar in the GC and taking the Ochre Jersey, Rodriguez takes 12th on the day, after fading in the sprint, not a great day for Exxon-Walmart.

Stage 4

This was the day we pencilled in as the big aim before the race started, and we're hoping for a win today on the road into Goolwa. Farrar should suit the stage perfectly, and we'll look to set him up with a strong lead out to achieve this.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/4-1.jpg

The day started with a very large breakaway (14) getting clear including Dom Rollin.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-61.jpg

The peloton clearly didn't like the idea of chasing down such a big break, and they reeled them in as they reached the summit of the days climb, the break was caught.

Lieuwe Westra won the KOM sprint ahead of Francsico Peréz, and the duo then continued there attack, leading to the formation of the break of the day, (Rollin once again present)

With Carlos Barredo as the on road Ochre jersey, and us having a man in the break, Rabobank were forced to give chase, they steadily brought back the front group, but not before Rollin could win both Isprints.

Omega-Pharma and Sky were the first teams to put a train together as the final approached, we had only 3 men left, (Hincapie, Rodriguez, Farrar) Greipel looks best placed in this train, at the back on his teams wheel.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-69.jpg

With 5km to go, our train moved to the front, we were clearly favoured by most other sprinters, with B-H on our wheel, and a huge line of sprinters behind him.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-65.jpg

3.5km to go, and Greipel has swapped trains, the early train now has race leader Carlos Barredo at the back, along with Sutton and Fischer.
Hincapie is all but spent, and prepares to hand over to final leadout, Fred Rodriguez.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-52.jpg

1.4km to go, and we're almost with Farrar, the second train is fading now, and the sprinters on our wheel are having trouble to get forward, blocked by the second line.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-64.jpg

Farrar takes it! He showed good power in the sprint to hold off Boassen-Hagen and Allan Davies. In the end, the sprinters weren't able to change order until too late, as the other line blocked out the guys behind Farrar, leaving him set perfectly for the win.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-64.jpg

Farrars performance was enough to move back into Ochre, thanks to the bonus seconds, and Rodriguez was able to hold on for 6th place, he's having a great start to the season.

We're here for stage 5 of the Santos Tour Down Under, for the traditional double-ascent of Old Wilunga Hill. Last year saw a breakaway victory on this stage decide the GC, and we ride the same route as last year today, could we see the same result?

Our team are behind Fred Rodriguez for today, he's a good hill climber/sprinter, and with some excellent early form, he may be able to tip the balance in his favour against the better climbers, and hold on for a sprint finish.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/5-1.jpg

2 Early breakaway attempts were foiled by BMC, who clearly still remembered the events of last year, and were keen to avoid a repeat.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-62.jpg

In fact between them and Skil-Shimano, no break got clear until just shy of the first ascent of Old Wilunga, when George Hincapie made an attack to reclaim the KOM jersey.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-58.jpg

He held out over the summit on lap 1, but was caught on the descent, setting us up with an exciting finish seeming very likely, as well as giving George the KOM jersey overall!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-56.jpg

Into the second ascent, the man whose made all the drama so far was at it once again! Bert De Waele makes an attack early on the climb, followed by Fast Freddie, Ryder Hesjedal, and Rigo Urán of Rabobank.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-68.jpg

As they started the descent, Pietropolli and Riccó joined them out in front, forming a 6man group, 30seconds ahead of the bunch...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-66.jpg

The group was brought back with 12km to go, but a second spat of attacks, created another group in a similar position 4km out containing, Lars Bak (HTC) Freddie Rodriguez (Exxon-Walmart) Linus Gerdemann (Leopard-Trek) Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet) and Pietropolli (Lampre-ISD)

Freddie was on the wheel of HTC Rouleur Bak, feeling good, and also one of the best sprinters out in front.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-65.jpg

With 800m to go, the sprint starts and Rodriguez quickly shows his legs, coming around Bak. Pietropolli is technically a better sprinter, but his starting position was less favourable, can Freddie hold on?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-52.jpg

Yes he can! a 3rd stage win for Exxon-Walmart! He holds out in front of Bak and De Waele who complete the podium. Pietropolli faded badly, and in the end, Boassen-Hagen managed to bridge the gap, so there are no time gaps, leaving Farrar in Ochre, with... Freddie second!

Stage 6

The last day of the StdU should be a simple affair, just 90km in length, and with no real climbing, we should see a bunch sprint where Tyler will be gunning for another stage win.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/6-1.jpg

They got under way in the usual fashion, with a break going away in the early kilometres, today containing 6 men, including Mathieu Perget of AG2R, (2nd in KOM)

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-78.jpg

The group held a lead of about 4minutes, pegged by Astana and Garmin, but we decided to bring it back, and George Hincapie took up the charge.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-64.jpg

Sure enough, with 12km to go, the break was caught, however, Perget had collected full KOM points on the day, meaning that Hincapie loses the jersey he's held since day 1.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-65.jpg

With it all back together we started to put together a train, having spent Hincapie pulling back the dangerous break, Vogel instead took up first leadout role, we were followed the likes of Boassen Hagen, Davies, Bozic and Mondory, whilst the opposite train contained Bos, Greipel and Goss.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-57.jpg

Vogel got us to the front where Rodriguez took over, however he was feeling pretty tired due to the days strong winds, and with 2km to go, Farrar was already at the front...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-69.jpg

As the sprint started, the second stronger train came past Farrar, he managed to grab the wheel of Davies as he came past though, and could go with the big sprinters.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-70.jpg

700m to go and the sprinters are really battling, Farrar is looking a bit tired, as Greipel and Boassen-Hagen both launch of the trains to contest the finish...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-53.jpg

Greipel takes the stage in front of Boassen-Hagen and Goss, Farrar gets 5th, whilst back behind the biggest names, Rodriguez is able to cling on for 10th place.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-65.jpg

Overall, not our best day, but still overall a great tour! Farrar wins the Points and GC after staying with the peloton over the hills, but Hincapie just misses out on the KOM after Perget sneaks the jersey off his shoulders in Adelaide.
