Route of the Elk Grove
Three stages, one prologue and two sprinter stages. The one thing that mattered for the GC, for me, was the prologue.
I was off fairly well. At the first (and only) checkpoint, I was 13th. The team leader here shouted to give it some more and I did.
I had an even better second half and finished 10th!
Result Prologue
1 | Taylor Phinney | BMC Racing Team | 11'15 | | 2 | David Zabriskie | Team Garmin-Barracuda | + 1 | | 3 | Nelson Oliveira | Radioshack Nissan Trek | s.t. | | 4 | Marco Pinotti | BMC Racing Team | + 10 | | 5 | Alex Rasmussen | Team Garmin-Barracuda | + 14 | | 6 | Ramunas Navardauskas | Team Garmin-Barracuda | + 18 | | 7 | Jens Voigt | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 19 | | 8 | Ben Hermans | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 23 | | 9 | Stef Clement | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 24 | | 10 | Willy Wouters | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | IanButler |
I was able to keep my 10th place in the next two stages.
Final GC
1 | John Degenkolb | Team Argos-Shimano | 5h54'21 | | 2 | Taylor Phinney | BMC Racing Team | + 3 | | 3 | Nelson Oliveira | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 4 | | 4 | David Zabriskie | Team Garmin-Barracuda | s.t. | | 5 | Marco Pinotti | BMC Racing Team | + 13 | | 6 | Alex Rasmussen | Team Garmin-Barracuda | + 17 | | 7 | Ramunas Navardauskas | Team Garmin-Barracuda | + 21 | | 8 | Jens Voigt | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 22 | | 9 | Ben Hermans | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 26 | | 10 | Willy Wouters | Lotto Belisol | + 27 | IanButler |
Degenkolb, future team mate, won the two remaining stages. He's an amazing sprinter and I know we'll get along fine. We even decided to meet each other before the next American Tour, which will take place in Utah. It's been real nice so far, riding in America. I thought there would be no interest in the races, but the wonderful people here proved me wrong!
I won't report much during the Tour of Utah, since Stijn will be riding the Eneco Tour, and I'm sure you're all more anxious to hear about that. I'll report about the TT and the final two, hilly & mountain, stages.
Until then,
Willy |

considering the route, 10th is a very nice result.
Good luck at the eneco tour and in the rest of your USA adventure

Eneco Tour - Prologue
Well, here I am. Finally back in another World Tour race. André Greipel is my leader here, and I think I'm ready to serve him in a great lead-out!
A very short prologue today, nothing fancy.
But I was very happy, and especially to see some of my friends in the audience, cheering me on!

Eneco Tour - Stage 2
Seems flat, but the finale includes a steep hill, hope this won't be a problem.
It was a bad day from the start. I bumped my little toe against the breakfast table, than Kenny fell from the stairs... 30km from the finish, André took a fall in the peloton. Bak and Robert went back to try and get him back to the front. The peloton was making a strong pace and we were all confused, what needed to be done, now?
In the end, through all confusion and bad choices, we ended up with a 3-man train. Roelandts made the pace, I was in the middle, Greipel had made his way back and found my wheel.
I started sprinting, but the hill was real steep and so close to the finish, it ruined my entire sprint!
Viviani waited for the right moment and won. Greipel finishes 14th, how disappointing...
I feel this is somewhat my fault. I gave him the worst possible lead-out on the hill. I hope I can make up for it tomorrow.

Tour of Utah - Prologue
A very short prologue here in Utah.
I did my thing, as usual. And I finished 10th, like I'm doing a lot lately!
Though I feel kind of funny. If it doesn't get better by tomorrow morning, I'll go see the team doctor here.

Well, Willy is getting better. I remember him finishing 14th all the time before his doping accusations etc. Now every time 10th seems better
A shame that Stijn couldn't give André a proper leadout. Tomorrow will be better.
Also congrats with the 2500 screenshots thing

Nice to see the Eneco Tour finishing close to my hometwon, in Rhenen at the Grebbeberg (1000m at 3.5%, max 7%). That ain't a finish for the Gorilla, even the finish is located near the entrance of a nice Zoo (Ouwehands Dierenpark)!
