Can't wait for the world-saving secret. Though if it's world-saving, why keep it secret? |

The electoral college isn't really an elected body though. Elected officials can't be electors in the college. They are chosen by state legislators, then when the election rolls around they are supposed to vote the way the state went. They don't have to vote one way or the other though. For example, in Michigan an elector chooses to vote for Romney instead of Obama. It's possible, it's not illegal, but it rarely happens.
I've always wondered about that. Is there reasoning for this being the way it is? And are there any ramifications for going against the vote?
There are no ramifications and it happens all the time:

So technically speaking John Edwards received 1 electoral vote in 2004 due to an elector filling it out wrong. There are no punishments for this, however, as it is a secret ballot. As the article states though, it is technically not legal.

Another result, one which has gone a bit under the radar, is that Puerto Rico voted for statehood. It has to be approved by Congress first though.
Chances of that happening?
Not any time soon, given a divided congress and huge federal deficit. |

Every single person outside the U.S., plus more or less half of your domestic population. Bummer.

I think America is judged a lot (with reason), but we should give it lots of credit too. After all, they produced Jim Morrison.
Thank you, United States of America, thank you! |

There is no "nice" country on this planet. It is easy to talk bad about any country.
But it also be possible to talk about the good stuff. I for example think it was good what happened in the Armstrong case in regard of long term development of cycling racing. |

0% We would have to add another star to the flag and 50 is such a nice number.
Merge the Dakotas
How hard can it be?

This.
And no one even try to discuss Vatican City! |

Indeed but if looking at it in purely military terms what about Costa Rica?

The army is constitutionally abolished.

Or let the republic of Texas secede like they've been talking about forever.
Northern California would like to split from SoCal also; that would leave an odd number. |

I've spent a whole lifetime learning that there are 50 states (and not 52) so you better not change it!
When you're talking about "nice" countries I'de have to say Iceland would rank pretty far up. They don't have an army, they don't even have any money! The only "bad" thing about them might be whaling.
There's a fine line between "psychotherapist" and "psycho the rapist"

There's not that much of a difference between Northern and Southern California. Weather is probably the biggest one. I think the split would be between east and west California The eastern part of the state is mostly retirees. The western part of the state is much more cosmopolitan.
And nobody really likes Texas anyways I spoke to a Mexican friend of mine, and he said Mexico wouldn't take Texas back if we paid them

Turns out the guy who is nearest to my political ideals got less than 4,000 votes in the US election. Glad I'm not American. |
