Australian National Championships

Without further ado, I can present to you, the first results of the 2012 Calendar season!

We had no riders in the race, as we have no Aussie riders, but here are the Top10's from both the RR and TT events.

We're flying down to Australia tomorrow where we will settle into our hotel rooms in Adelaide. The team for our first event of the season will be:

George Hincapie - Leader
Tyler Farrar - Sprinter
Dominique Rollin
Fred Rodriguez
Shy Vogel
Scott Zwizanski
Caleb Fairly

So, we're here. The first WT event of 2012! Yes that's right folks, it's the Santos Tour Down Under kicking off shortly. First up, we take a look at the route and riders, of this years edition of only WT even in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Route

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/2-1.jpg
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/3-1.jpg
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/4-1.jpg
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/5-1.jpg
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/6-1.jpg

This edition is similar to last years route, is very similar to last years, though the first and last stages have both seen an overhaul, leaving the standard feel to the course, which looks set for some more sprinters domination.

The punchy sprinters are favourite for the overall win, though last year we saw Kurt Arvesen pip them at the post after a successful breakaway.

There's a strong mixture of sprinters and punchers here in Australia, so we should see some interesting competition over the more decisive stages.

My pick as favourite is Daniele Bennati of Leopard Trek. He was looking very good last year, until a crash on the final stage robbed him of the Ochre Jersey. I think he'll be back with vengeance this time around, and has the ability to compete on every stage of the race!

Glad you decided to continue. Looking forward to follow this story for another season.

Stage 1

The first day looks to be one for the sprinters with a small dose of Punch inside. The climb doesn't look deadly enough to create a GC shakeup, but it might burn the legs of the pure sprinters.

My prediction for today is a duel between the likes of Bennati, Goss and Boassen-Hagen. My final choice is going to be Matthew Goss as he is surely looking to impress, both on home soil, and also with his new team Leopard Trek.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/1-1.jpg

Aleksandr Porsev set fire to the race right from the off, making a brave attack after just 2km. He wasn't followed however, and chose to drop back after around 15km, clearly not fancying the ride solo out in front.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-76.jpg

Eventually, after a failed 15man break was brought back, we got our BotD. 6 Men including representation for 2 of the Wildcarded teams (HTC and Skil-Shimano) got a 5minute gap on the peloton, as they reached the halfway point.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-62.jpg

Both Farrar and Rodriguez were feeling good as we started the day, so we were keen to pull back the breakaway, getting our new jerseys on the front of the peloton, with Hincapie and Vogel doing a large portion of the work to pull back the break.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-62.jpg

After making the catch on the climb, Hincapie darted away from the pack to pick up the KOM points, and with it the Jersey ahead of tomorrows stage.

The jersey isn't a big priority, but it was nice to get the team onto the podium at least once today!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-59.jpg

With 7km to go, the Sprint train began forming down the left hand side. The climb had indeed taken a lot of Farrars power from him, but we will try none the less.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-54.jpg

With just 3km to go, Riccardo Ricco of Astana tried to jump way and out do the sprinters with a late attack, he caused some reaction, and it became clear that an Exxon-Walmart stage win was out of the question today as Farrar couldn't keep pace.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-65.jpg

On the line, Borut Bozic of Vacansoleil just held out for the win ahead of AG2R's Lloyd Mondory. Goss was on the bottom step of the podium, whilst Farrar and Rodriguez held out for 8th and 9th places respectively.

Tyler will surely improve, hope he'll get the stage-win.

baggieboys32
He did last year Wink
Though, considering form, I'm backing Rodriguez or Hincapie to get us our first victory of the season Pfft

I'll cheer for Exxon - Walmart anyways! You're doing a really great job, and I hope this will run for a long long time!

baggieboys32
Wow cheers for the compliments Fernando, it's great to see Spidertech going strong as well Grin

I've just finished stage 2, debating whether to put it up now, or leave it for tomorrow...

fernando97

baggieboys32

Well, they still make a decent Pro Cont team. And with 3 sprinters at 77 no wonder they were invited to the TDU. Thanks for the insight.
