The Favourites
*** Thomas Dekker, Tejay van Garderen (Garmin), Mauro Santambrogio (Radio Shack).
** Gabriele Bosisio (Liquigas), Dario Cataldo (Omega Pharma), Wout Poels (Rabobank).
* Pavel Brutt (Katusha), Fabio Duarte (Astana), Chris Anker Sorensen (BMC).
Our Goal
As this race is more for the puncheur with a good sprint, a top 3 will be very hard for Dekker. So we'll be happy with a top 5.
The Race
12km to go
Has the peloton miscalculated the margin and the chase to the soil leader? WIth 1 lap to go, 12km, Garmin's Damien Gaudin is the only rider of the BOTD left in the lead. He starts the last ascend of the Cote Camilien Houde with a margin of 1'20 to the peloton.
Finish
A double Saxo Bank attack by Michele Scarponi and Vladimir Karpets is too much for Gaudin and he gets caught with less than 5km to go. But als the Saxo's cant make it, and the race ends in a sprint. That sprint is dominated by Omega Pharma - Quick Step, with Dario Cataldo taking the win, beating his teammate Daniele Pietropolli. Just as in Québec, Tejay van Garderen is too fast for Thomas Dekker, with today the 2 finishing in 3rd and 4th.
The Results
1 | Dario Cataldo | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step | 5h41'49 | 2 | Daniele Pietropolli | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step | s.t. | 3 | Tejay Van Garderen | Garmin - Barracuda | s.t. | 4 | Thomas Dekker | Petronas - Monster Energy | s.t. | 5 | João Cabreira | Saur - Sojasun | s.t. | 6 | Michael Rogers | Sky ProCycling | s.t. | 7 | Vladimir Karpets | Saxo Bank SunGard | s.t. | 8 | Simon Clarke | Dexia | s.t. | 9 | Gabriele Bosisio | Liquigas - Microsoft | s.t. | 10 | René Mandri | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | s.t. |
The Winner
Word from the DS
After 2 days in Canada, we saw 2 great races, with better results for the team than expected, considering their fitness. Proud at Dekker with 2nd and 4th!

The Race
11km to go
Just before the summit of the penultimate climb, the Tienne aux Pierres, 4 riders try to attack out of the peloton. Wim Van Huffel (Vacansoleil), Daniele Pietropolli (Omega Pharma), Fabio Polazzi (Wallonie) and Fabian Wegmann (FDJ) try to surprise the peloton, but they get caught in the descend towards Namur.
2km to go
The 4 have been caught, and the race towards the foot of the final climb, to the Citadelle de Namur has begun. With 3 riders present in the first peloton (33 riders), we have even formed a sprint train. And it's Marcel Kittel leading that train in the first part of the 1.9km climb!
1km to go
Thomas Dekker has taken over from Kittel, and he's leading te race going under the flamme rouge. Matti Breschel, our main rider for today's sprint is still waiting in the wheel of the Dutch time trialist. On the other side of the road, Tejay van Garderen has broken free and the winner of the Grand Prix cycliste de Québec starts his sprint.
Finish
Van Gardere passes our sprint train with 800m to go, and then Breschel settles himself in the American his wheel. When Van Garderen starts to fade, Breschel takes over and sprints to his 7th win of the season! Van Garderen takes 2nd place, while Dekker finishes in front of the peloton in 3rd.

Dear fans and followers of the Petronas - Monster Energy cycling team. Welcome to this press conference. To start with the news the press conference is about: after almost 4 years of managing the team, that first started as Monster Energy - Ford, then turned into Monster Energy - Subway and the last season as Petronas - Monster Energy, I have decided to quit after this season. The team will continue to exist, except with a new team manager / DS.
Of course you want to know why I quit my job as the manager of a team that is the most succesful cycling team of the moment, that has won all Grand Tours in the past 4 years, 6 in total, and 3 cycling monuments, and that has dominated that team rankings for the previous 3 years. And I quit my job as the team manager of the team that brought the sport of cycling to a different kind of public, made it more extreme and made the sport sexy again (yes, the Monster-babes!!)??
The reason is simple. This great job costs me a lot of time, time that I want to spend with my family and finding new challenges. The team can continue without me, I was just a team manager. And I think the current team situation is that good, that the good results will come in the next seasons. My successor is found inside the team: Joost Posthuma quits as a professional cyclist and becomes the new team manager of Petronas - Monster Energy. I wish him and the rest of the team all the best luck for the following seasons. Now is the focus at the last races of the season, as we have not finished winning!!
So all I want to say is: thank you!!!!

Oh shit. That's a shame. It has been a great story Dienblad, I think the longest one ever on this site, and a great one as well(I admit, I didn't follow from the start, but this story started about a year before I've registered here)
Also, it was the first story (except stories like Cactusjack's 2100 and beyond), that advanced so far, that Kelderman developed hard and was awesome
Thanks for the great story Dienblad!

I've been following offline for the past while and this story has been one of the main reasons why I even visit the site. Fantastic domination of the Vuelta, and brilliant double and record from Gesink.
Also very sad to hear that you're finishing the story, but you seem to have hinted that there could be a continuation? Is this true, have you selected a successor? |
