Stage 21: Madrid ITT
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Vuelta/PCM0007-7.jpg

An ITT wraps up the Vuelta for this year. Most positions are already locked down. In play today will be 3rd and 4th between Moreno and Donald. Also, 5th, 6th and 7th where a narrow margin separates Sanchez, Evans and Sorensen.

Mortensen is the first guy with a really strong time today. It will end up +1'46 (10th).

As Donald passes the first time check, beating Moreno is not a question, it is clear it will happen. The real question is will he top Reich's time? The final answer is no, but only just. +22 (2nd).

Fabian Cancellara has dominated this race. Can he do it again? Coming off the Vuelta, both Pardilla and Donald are in good form. In a travesty, Markus Reich was not selected for the German team, otherwise he might be one of the favorites.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0025.jpg
Jason is flying and has a chance at the win. He crosses at +18 though. Good for 2nd.

Nobody else comes close and a surprising win for Mortensen.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0027.jpg
We send Taylor Phinney on the attack. He is joined by two Discovery Channel cyclists, Mark Cavendish and Henrich Haussler along with Joakim Gunnerud

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0028.jpg
92km from the finish, Rodrigues, Brajkovic and Gustov go on the attack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0029.jpg
A short while later, Gustov and company are caught. As that happens, Eibegger, Ignatiev and Morabito take a shot.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0031.jpg
Jorgensen attacks as well. Others get into the action, including Fuchs.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0032.jpg
Several of the attackers are caught.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0034.jpg
Ignatiev, Fuchs, Morabito and Eibegger manage to get away. With 25km to go, it is starting to look like the winner will come from these 4.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0035.jpg
18km from the finish, Pierfelici challenges that notion and attacks, along with Munoz Gonzalez.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0036.jpg
Up front, Eibegger falls off the pace.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0037.jpg
Then Morabito falls off the pace.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0038.jpg
It's down to Fuchs and Ignatiev. Both of these guys have had a taste of being world champion and want it again. The sprint is very tight.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/worlds/PCM0039.jpg
Ignatiev will pull it off in the end, though, for his second title.

Back after a long work related hiatus.

September Summary

The sponsors continue to be delighted by our overall performance. Cyclist of the month was, not surprisingly, Pardilla.

UCI Pro Tour: Individual Standings

Thomas Dekker continues to sit at the top of the standings and is closing in on back-to-back individual standings wins.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/PCM0040.jpg

UCI Pro Tour: Team Standings

Discovery Channel still at the top, but Rabobank has had a fantastic season.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/PCM0041.jpg

Continental Tour: Individual Standings

Stephane Vrillard is at the top after a great run of results.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/PCM0042.jpg

Continental Tour: Team Standings

Unibet is secure. Bouygues and Credit Agricole continue to fight for 2nd. Acqua & Sapone have popped up to the 4th spot with a very good month.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/PCM0043.jpg

October Schedule

As we wind down the season, it is a light schedule of remaining races:

Oct 7: Paris-Tours
Oct 10: Giro di Lombardia
Oct 11: Chrono des Nations les Herbiers
Oct 11: Japan Cup

A lot of sprinters here, but who has the end of season form to push through for the win?

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0045.jpg
Fumiyuki Beppu is feeling in good form today. He wants to attack on the second to last small hill of the day.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0046.jpg
Beppu is joined by Michiel Van Aelbroeck. They get a small lead.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0047.jpg
Two kilometers from the finish and Beppu is still holding off the pack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0048.jpg
The sprint starts and the pack is coming fast. Can Beppu hang on?

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0049.jpg
He does it! It is Beppu's first ever race win and what a place to get it. Nice riding.

Looks like I haven't been on the site in about 7 months. What can I say? Been busy in that period. Moved to Thailand, had to deal with red shirt protests and things burning down around me, etc.

Anyway, figure I'll progress this story a bit further while waiting for any bugs to be sorted on PCM 2010.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0050.jpg

I ran this race 7 or 8 months ago so don't remember all of the details.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0051.jpg

Cataldo attacks and Wegmann counters, but it is too soon.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0052.jpg

Palini attacks on the flat.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0053.jpg

Konovalovas, Ricco, Uran and Kwiatkowski counter.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0054.jpg

It is to no avail as the pack catches them.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0055.jpg

Valverde attacks. The aging veteran is trying to show that he still has it. Wyss, Ricco and our very own Popo follow.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0057.jpg

Wyss gets the lead with 10km to go to the finish.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0058.jpg

12 seconds back, Valverde, Popo, Konovalovas, Ricco and Kwiatkowski come together for the chase.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0060.jpg

With 2.2 km to go, Popo brings them all together but the price is high, he is almost on 4 red bars.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0062.jpg

The sprint starts and Wyss bursts to the front.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0063.jpg

His burst of speed is enough to hold off Valverde, who finishes 2nd. Popo cracks at the finish line but manages to hang on for 3rd.

Final 2013 Rankings

The final rankings for the 2013 season are out.

UCI Pro Tour: Individual

No surprise, Thomas Dekker takes it.

UCI Pro Tour: Team

Discovery Channel takes it, mainly because there was no competition in the cobblestone races this season.

Continental Tour: Individual

Great result for the youngster, Smail Buadis, as he takes the title.

Continental Tour: Team

Massive shake-up here. Going into October it seemed clear as to who would be promoted. However, Acqua e Sapone have come out of nowhere to nab the second promotion spot. Well done by them.

That is it. It was a good season for Discovery Channel even if the Tour de France was a massive disappointment. Next years team will look a bit different after a big makeover.
