Before the Mediteraneen presentation a short wildcard overview.
After not getting into the Tour Down Under we decided to try some classic wildcards. The Ardennes classics didn`t suit our race schedule, so we decided to go for the cobbled classics mainly. With Keukeleire and Goddaert we hoped for at least one invitation. Both will have a long classic early season and should be well prepared.
Unfortunately the race organisators thought different. Neither in Paris Roubaix, Ronde Van Vlaanderen, Gent Wevelgem or E3 Prijs we were invited. Of course the competition is pretty strong there with teams like Farnese Vini, Topsport, Landbouwkrediet or Loto Belisol. But with up to 7 wildcards given we had a small hope.
But luckily we were rewarded in a great way for our tries. The only other attempt was Milan San Remo, a race that suits Jens Keukeleire a lot and also Serry could do well on this terrain. 11 trying teams and only 7 free spots. But here we got the invitation and so we will directly ride maybe the biggest cycling race in our first year in PCT.
Expect for Keukeleire and most probably Serry the squad is open. The riders will have 2 months for proving us to deserve a spot. The decision will fall not before March. So all riders have their February races to ride with some extra motivation.
For me this means continueing being aggressive but also a loyal helper. Then I hope to be part of the Milan San Remo team squad. |

I was a bit surprised as well. But it`s a nice surprise and I hope to get Keukeleire into top form until then.
 Tour Méditerranéen
The Tour Mediterraneen is a UCI 2.1 race held in Southern France. It was a five-day stage race but was shortened recently to only 4 stages. Still the race kept his style by being decided on Mt. Faron.
Record winner is the Dutch Gerrie Knetemann with 3 wins.

Maxime Bouet won the race in 2012 and celebrated his biggest career success. He will be at the start also in 2013 trying to defend his title.
None of the 4 stages is really flat. But the first three might end in a sprint finish while the last one is definitely something for the puncheurs and climbers. Here on top of Mt. Faron the race is normally decided and everything else would be a surprise.
On paper a pretty strong team here. But for most it`s the first season race and they lack in race fitness.
Pieter Serry obviously will lead us here and belongs to the outside favourites. It`s only Mannion and me of the 2012 team. All others are new riders including our young American stage race hope Austin Crawford and Juan Lawrence. It will be interesting to see what first is capable to do here.
Howes is the co-leader with Haas having some kind of helper role.
Grenda once again will be our main sprinter but as seen in San Luis he lacks to quality on harder stages. So we don`t expect too much of him and will give him time to learn.
A pretty tough field here. In especially the Pro Tour teams have sent very strong squads.

Too bad about those cobbled wildcards. But Milan - San Remo is pretty great.
Just imagine Ryan riding in that, it would be an amazing experience for him! Hope he gets selected! |

MSR is indeed great. Haven`t expected this one and was close to not even asking. I will have a look on the fitness in March. Won`t change anything there and keep them as I had them in start of January. Then I will compare the riders results. This might even be more important than having 8 great puncheurs. It`s supposed to be some kind of reward for their results. So nothing is decided yet.
Tour Méditerranéen
Stage 1 - Pertuis - Meyreuil (130,8km)
The first stage already starts with some hills. These obviously make it hard for pure sprinters while others should have less problems. For us it`s suboptimal of course with Grenda surely isn`t a known puncheur.
3 riders in todays break. Nathan Haas was actually the 4th but he lost contact at the intermediate due to less concentration there...
Hulsmans, Bideau and in especially Remi Pauriol are dangerous riders.
Ag2r and Quickstep doing the pace. First probably for last years winner Bouet or Mondory while Quickstep has two great riders for today. Julien Simon is known for these kind of hard finishes while Matteo Trentin is a young but excellent sprinter on hard terrain.
With 16km to go the group is caught. Soon we will start the last descent and going on a smaller hill towards the finish.
5km to go and we start the last hill. It`s time for me to try something as Grenda told us not to ride for him. The sprinter teams had a moment of checking each others. So it was the best time to attack right now.
Less than 1,5km to go and the sprinters doesn`t really start. No one wants to go first and they probably suffered after the hill.
Now it`s Michael Van Staeyen on the right going first.
I still have 300-400 advance.
900m left and now also the other sprinters start. The highest point is reached and now it`s flat which is not ideal for me.
Trentin, Impey, Martens and Mondory all coming fast from behind.
Meter for meter they are coming closer now...
Nothing to see of Van Staeyen who went too early.
Bad luck for me. On the last 300m they catch me and I won`t take the first season win.
Matteo Trentin wins the stage. He beats Impey and Martens.
I still finish as 8th just one ahead of Pieter Serry, who also had a nice start for us today. We surely will try again on the next stages.

Indeed a good start in especially for Eastman. Would have been an awesome start when being in the lead now.
Also thought he would make it but then he lost the speed while others accelerated even more.
Tour Méditerranéen
Stage 2 - Salon de Provence - Martigues (134,9km)
Todays stage looks easier than yesterday and so we hope to get a decent result with Grenda. For the rest of us it`s about staying focused and avoid crashes.
After yesterdays attempt I am 2nd in the Youth ranking but with Trentin having the leader jersey I will present the white jersey instead. Nice reward for me.
4 riders attacked early. Most famous definitely Taylor Phinney. The peloton is fine with this group and calms down.
But with 9km to go Bulgac is caught as last of them. Now the sprint will surely take place.
Ag2r with a long train for Belletti. Grenda at least has contact at the very end.
Daryl Impey was the fastest today. The South African beats Belletti in a very close finish. Again a surprising Martens outsprints Trentin and proves his very good early form.
Ben couldn`t follow in the end. It was definitely too fast for him. He takes 15th today which might be his area for the season to be honest.
