How could I forget about his comeback in your story? Yeah, 3 minutes down, that means nothing for Basso in a Giro, you're right!

@ tsmoha: Yeah, it's indeed good news for Nibbles. Evans even got injured, as you'll see in the next report... And about the sprints, that's really weird. You'd think that with 4 flat stages, the pack would want every of those to end in a bunch sprint at least, but no...
@ YvesStevens: It's quite a pity, but Jani would be the helper for Nibali anyways, so he hasn't much hope for the GC anyway.
@ dienblad & FulgsangxTH3: Imagine, pink from stage 2 until stage 21... that would be something
@ baia & FreitasPCM: The next report will give quite some indication about the fight Nibali vs. Basso, but see yourselves...
@ sutty68: Thanks, it indeed does

May 15, 2012 – Giro d'Italia
Stage 7
The first killer stage of this Giro. The break had no further impact today, the real action began on the last climb. After some early attacks by Mosquera and Sella were neutralized, Michael Rogers and Mikel Nieve, 2nd and 10th of the GC, got away. Brajkovic and Szmyd weren't able to bring them back but at least they decimated the group of the favorites.
Very early, Cadel Evans fell back. He obviously got injured yesterday, eventually loses 11 minutes and all his ambitions. Soon, Vincenzo Nibali then overtook the pace and held it incredibly high. One after another, his opponents couldn't keep up anymore and he got away without even attacking. During the last 2 kms, he reached and overtook Mikel Nieve, but Michael Rogers held on to stage win.
Behind them, Duarte and Scarponi were the strongest. Ivan Basso lost almost two minutes to Nibali, he is already 7 minutes back in the GC now. Rujano lost another three minutes, he's 10 minutes back. Only Michael Rogers is still in reach of the Italian.
1 | Michael Rogers | Sky ProCycling | 4h37'14 | 2 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale | + 27 | 3 | Mikel Nieve | Euskaltel – Euskadi | + 37 | 4 | Fabio Duarte | Geox – TMC | + 1'06 | 5 | Michele Scarponi | Lampre – ISD | s.t. | 6 | Daniel Martin | Team Garmin – Cervélo | + 1'26 | 7 | Robert Kiserlovski | Pro Team Astana | + 1'44 | 8 | Dario Cataldo | Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | 9 | Ezequiel Mosquera | Movistar Team | + 2'06 | 10 | Kanstantin Siutsou | Team T-Mobile | + 2'19 |
Stage 8
For a change, we had a rather unspectacular stage today. A break came free including Daniel Oss. It had a nice advance but the pack was trying to bring it back. On the last hill, it split and only Kristof Vandewalle was left in front. Despite some late attacks by the favorites, he couldn't get caught and saved some meters into the finish. Emanuele Sella won the sprint of the chasing group, which was assigned the same time. Today's loser was Alexandre Geniez, who lost 1'47 due to unattentiveness and falls back in the young riders classification.
1 | Kristof Vandewalle | Quick·Step Cycling Team | 4h04'32 | 2 | Emanuele Sella | Androni Giocattoli | s.t. | 3 | Matthew Lloyd | GreenEdge Cycling | s.t. |
Another very hard stage. No notable break of the day was built. On the penultimate climb, Sylvester Szmyd made an unhuman pace and caught lots of riders on the wrong foot. Eventually, only nine riders including, Nibali, Brajkovic, Duarte, Scarponi, Rogers and Mosquera made it over the top together. Nibali did a reasonable pace on the descent and the bigger groups behind them couldn't reconnect.
On the climb, the group soon decreased. Brajkovic couldn't keep up anymore, eventually, only the other five mentioned above were in front. Those seem to be the strongest ones at this Giro. Nibali attacked with 1,8 kms to go but miscalculated his powers and was outsprinted by the others. Fabio Duarte got a small gap and wins the stage.

As Avin said, he didn't He made up 35 seconds on Nibbles on the seventh stage, afterwards they finished within the same time on both stages.
@ tsmoha & sutyt68: I didn't expect him to be that good either. I listed him as a one star contender in the preview because his mountain stat isn't that good (78) and there aren't many time trialing kms. But he already surprised me at last year's Tour de France where he finished 8th in front of the Schlecks, Anton, Van den Broeck etc. Maybe this time he's in for a GT podium, but there are still a lot of heavy mountain stages to come.

May 9, 2012 – Giro d'Italia
Stage 10
The team time trial. Skil and Unicef did some first good times but the stage win should be given away later. Maciej Bodnar led Liquigas until the first checkpoint where they were 40 seconds behind the current leader and top favorite Sky around GC's second Michael Rogers. Then, Vincenzo Nibali overtook the pace and made a terrific job. On the second checkpoint, they were only 25 seconds behind.
On the last kilometers, it was a race between Janez Brajkovic and Sky, who set the best time in the finish. But the Slovenian did amazing, and with a last help of Sylvester Szmyd, Liquigas wins the time trial by 14 seconds to Sky. A huge effort by the whole team.
Michele Scarponi lost 1'01 today, Fabio Duarte 44' and Ezequiel Mosquera 33'.
1 | Liquigas – Cannondale | | 38'00 | 2 | Sky ProCycling | | + 14 | 3 | Katusha Team | | + 22 |
Stage 11
A four men break was in front almost all day. Liquigas did a lot on the last kms to bring them back but still the remaining duo entered the last ascent with a minute advance. With 2.5 kms, Leonardo Bertagnolli attacks and quickly creates a nice gap. He overtakes the escapees and sprints towards the win. In the large chasing group (which catches the break as well), Vincenzo Nibali is by far the fastest and even creates a gap himself. He comes in second and makes up 28 seconds and 50 seconds, respectively, on his contenders. Fantastic!
1 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Katusha Team | 5h21'56 | 2 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale | + 29 | 3 | Mikel Nieve | Euskaltel – Euskadi | + 49 | 4 | Rubén Plaza | Movistar Team | + 57 | 5 | Kanstantin Siutsou | Team T-Mobile | s.t. | … | 15 | Matthew Lloyd | GreenEdge Cycling | + 1'19 |
Stage 12
The break had no impact, it was already caught on the second to last ascent. Then already, the front group around Nibali was reduced to 15 riders, and quite a lot of the Top 10 were missing. On the last climb, Nibali himself upped the pace and as we're used to, only the Top 5 could follow – plus Ruben Plaza, surprisingly. Although Nibali and Scarponi could get away on the descent, the group reunited and sprinted for the win. Fabio Duarte had the best legs in the end, Nibali finished fourth.

Wow, you won the TTT! for that! Nibali is doing great, this 11th stage with 28"- and 50"-gap on the other favourites on such a short climb was outstanding again! Nice to see Duarte winning, he's doing good and I smell (another) 4th for him in Final GC, if you know what I mean

Things are looking great to win the Giro. 1'54 to Rogers and 3'39 to Scarponi should be enough, normally.... And for the TTT:
