Well, the prologue, the TTT (all over now), then there's a MTT, I don't know how long but since it's uphill constantly it's good for Roberto, and finally a 32km TT in Madrid. |

Fantastic 1-2 for the team and stunning solo ride from Amets! (which is a great signing btw.)
How mysterious that the stage 7 result got lost
Vincenzo Nibali - Rui Costa - Nairo Quintana - Alberto Contador - Peter Sagan
WDshirts

- Story about Dries Deckers - racing against Merckx, de Vlaeminck etc.

FreitasPCM: Thanks, let's hope so
Jakstar22: Could happen (especially with this field, it's not too strong)
Daggen: Atm, he's holding it with a comfortable lead, yeah!
the_hoyle: They'll have to cough up a lot of dough for him. I presume Roberto will win this Vuelta, so when's the last time a rider won a monument (L-B-L) and a GT in the same year? |

Vuelta a España 2013 - Stage 9
Not many would know this in advance, but this would already decide the Vuelta.
Roberto threw himself in the descent, no one was able to follow.
On the final climb, he caught the breakaway group. But he didn't stay with them a minute, he just kept going his record-breaking pace.
And, of course, he went on to win the stage, smashing his opponents. This was obvious, if nothing happened, Roberto would win this Vuelta by minutes.

Vuelta a España 2013
Since our story goes about Roberto's biggest moments, we're unable to tell his entire story, obviously. Decisions had to made, and one of those decisions was that we'd skip the rest of this Vuelta. The reason why? Obvious, Roberto smashed the opposition every chance he could get...
The rest of the race
Some things we'd like to highlight, though:
- Roberto went on to win a total of 5 stages, that's one more than in 2012.
- Those stage wins secured him of another Points Jersey.
- We saw another side of the great leader that's Roberto Velásquez, when he held back on the KoM sprints so that his teammate Txurruka could take home the KoM jersey.
- Roberto led his team to all possible jerseys, including best team.
- With 5 stage wins and the overall win, he upped his 2013 victories to 17, as much as he had in 2012. With 4 more races to go that year, he wanted to break that.

Roberto Velásquez:
This was another great Vuelta for me, and the team! I've enjoyed it tremendously, I'm very happy for Txurruka. A stage win and KoM jersey is very nice for him, he deserves it more than anyone! I'm ready for the World Championship, the profile should suit me!

Wauw! Total domination with 5 wins. 10 minutes gap to second? Not every day you see that.. Would have been close about the win if Roberto hadn't participated though.

World Championship Individual Time Trial
Roberto participated, but only to stay in shape.
In the end, it was Cancellara, getting his 5th gold medal in WC ITT, an absolute record.

World Championship Road Race
A hilly profile.
Roberto was very eager to become World Champion. He once said it was an even bigger dream than winning Tour de France. Whether he meant it or not, it's certain that this day, Roberto woke up, feeling extremely anxious and nervous. His coach can confirm this:
Roberto was not usually a nervous person, normally he was quite relaxed all the time. But that day... He really, really wanted to become World Champion. And so did I. I wasn't moving with him to another team, so these were my final races with him (I also coached him in the National Team).
Haussler realized he wouldn't be able to prolong his title on this profile, so he took it easy, enjoying the race.
And the public felt Roberto was nervous. A major indicator was 60km from the finish, when Roberto accelerated himself. Ben Hermans of the Belgian team tried to follow him.
But Roberto was off himself. This desperate-seeming attempt had one advantage: the opposition did not know what to do, how to react.
It was unwise to underestimate Roberto, he had won major solos before, and he could do it again. Gilbert and Cancellara waited for 10km, but then they worked together and chased after Roberto.
But they had waited for too long. they were too late, Roberto was well on his way to maybe the most beautiful victory yet. A monstrous solo, ending in a Rainbow Jersey.

Reactions
Roberto Velásquez:
I'm ecstatic, what can I say? This is the most beautiful day in my professional career! I'm so happy. I was really nervous and I thought I was going to make a mistake. My worst fear was that I might miss the decisive breakaway, that's why I went early. But the second I went, all my doubts disappeared. I knew I was off to win this, and when I found out they hesitated behind me, the win was mine for the taking! I'm extremely happy that I'll wear this jersey for a year. I plan to wear it for the first time in Lombardia. Because of this win, I decided to race the Tour of Beijing and the Japan Cup as well. I want to enjoy this Rainbow Jersey as much as possible.
Philippe Gilbert:
When Roberto went, we hesitated. We didn't know what to do at first. After all, it was still 60km to go. But Roberto is a dangerous rider, you can't let him go, not on a profile like this. I saw him racing in the Vuelta and in Liège, he's extremely strong. We chased him but the race was done already. I'm very disappointed.
Fabian Cancellara:
I think Roberto will become a legend. He's a great kid with a great personality and measurable talent. I'm not ashamed of losing to him, the old has to make way for the young. I understand now why they call him Cannibal 2.0. I wish him much luck in his new jersey. |
