Thanks for supporting.
@ ste_18 - Aah, of course. They're made by camerluca.
UCI world championships - time trial
Next up is one of the year's biggest highlights: the worlds. As traditionally, we begin with the time trial. All the best riders against the clock have travelled to the southern part of the Netherlands to take on the rather demanding course in Valkenburg. The Cauberg climb in the finale could prove to be very decisive.
Top favourite is obviously the defending champion, Tony Martin. Surely very motivated as well, considering his season has been terrible so far. The only victory the German has managed to take is the prologue in the Tour of Luxembourg. Looked decent in the Vuelta however, so possibly going up.
His toughest competitors will certainly be four-time champion Fabian Cancellara and third man overall in the Tour; Bradley Wiggins. Normally those two are the only ones who should have even a hypothetical chance of challenging Martin. Will be interesting to see how their shape is.
Other names with a good outside chance include, for example; American champ Taylor Phinney, Vuelta runner-up Alberto Contador and Italy's main hope - Marco Pinotti. Contador for sure one to watch, as he is coming fresh off the Vuelta after his suspension. These are just a few of the names tho!
Lastly, from our perspective. Paillot is the only rider participating, hoping for a shot at the Top 10. His French team mate Sylvain Chavanel is more likely to compete for a top result, even though his form is far from where it should be if this was a big goal for him. Can't say that I'm hoping for much.

Paul Voss.
Did he improve that much in TT just because he had a win in the Catalunya prologue last year?? |

@ Freitas - Hahah, yeah I've heard he's pretty awesome! Unfortunately he hasn't been able to match his irl performances in the career so far.
@ roturn - Well, the AI isn't known for making smart decisions. Germany could obviously have sent a stronger rider than Voss. He's not that bad though - just over 70 TT I think.
UCI World Championships - time trial
First rider to leave the starting ramp is Alexander Serov from Russia. One of the less known riders in this race, but still very decent against the clock. A podium in the TT and fifth place overall in Post Danmark Rundt proves that. Quite impressive ride from his today too.
Serov kicks off the race - 1h05'49
A few minutes of race lead is all Serov gets to enjoy, however. Michael Rogers is the man who spoils the fun for him - spectacularly taking the lead by 41 seconds. Surely a tough one to beat, already this early in the race.
New race leader in Mick Rogers - 1h05'08
First man under 1h05' just a few minutes later, knocking Rogers down into second place. No one else than Captain America himself, Dave Zabriskie, in charge of things.
Dave Z storms into the lead - 1h04'58
Aussie #2, Riche Porte, also falls short against Zabriskie. The young man from Tasmania can't even beat his compatriot Rogers, but goes well enough to take a provisional third place. Probably not what he wanted.
Not the best day for Porte - 1h05'09
Zabriskie stands tall also after fellow American Tejay Van Garderen finishes. A really disappointing year for the extremely promising youngster - with an overall third place in Vuelta a Burgos being the only notable result. Horrible performance today as well - almost a minute off the lead.
A race, and season, to forget for Van Garderen - 1h05'49
Still fresh from a season without too much racing, Dario Cataldo carries excellent form off the recently finished Vuelta to set a time just three seconds short of Zabriskie. A nice way for him to wind down a successful season that has included a podium in Tirreno and victory in Trofeo Laigueglia.
Cataldo squeezes into second place - 1h05'01
Paillot sets off just a little while later, pumped with motivation to show that the spot in the squad is deserved. He really does that - crossing the finish line with the provisional fourth best time, almost matching Rogers and Porte.
Paillot shows his talent yet again - 1h05'12
So, after a first batch of strong names - this is the provisional top five:
David Zabriskie | 1h04'58 | Dario Cataldo | + 3 | Michael Rogers | + 10 | Richie Porte | + 11 | Yoann Paillot | + 14 |
While waiting for Germany's big hope; Martin, we follow his countryman Patrick Gretsch to the line. Surely not the best day for him today, finishing a bit outside the current top five. Big disappointment for sure, considering that he actually beat Martin in the German nationals time trial.
A weak day for Gretsch - 1h05'24
Another bright young talent; Tom Dumoulin, goes in around the same time as Gretsch. Not quite as well though, and definitely no place in the top ten for the Dutchman this year. He'll be one to watch in the future.
Dumoulin not quite there yet - 1h05'49
Ding, ding, ding! After a long period with Zabriskie on top, things finally change at the head the race. Surely nobody expected the insanely talented Joe Dombrowski to be the man taking over though, right?
And he doesn't just surpass - he absolutely annihilates his compatriot. New best time by a whopping 38 seconds! After second place in USAPCC, Utah, Joe Martin and Alsace - perhaps victory in the worlds?!
Dombrowski destroys all earlier starters - 1h04'20
Thomas De Gendt goes through the race next - also clocking a strong time. Provisional second place might compensate a bit for a season that has been a step back for the Belgian. Still, far away from Dombrowski.
De Gendt makes it into second - 1h04'51
Carrying quite some pressure from his home nation, Jonathan Castroviejo settles for third place behind Dombrowski and De Gendt. Not bad, but probably not enough for a medal - leaving only Contador to turn things right for Spain.
Castroviejo shoves Zabriskie off the provisional podium - 1h04'56
Time for another update on the current standings:
Joe Dombrowski | 1h04'20 | Thomas De Gendt | + 31 | Jonathan Castroviejo | + 36 | David Zabriskie | + 38 | Michael Rogers | + 48 |
The amazing Dombrowski finally starts to seem a little more human when Anton Vorobyev goes into provisional third place - a second slower than De Gendt. Looks more and more like form is more important than capacity on paper in this race.
An impressive performance from Vorobyev - 1h04'52
The top of the ranking gets even closer when Jack Bobridge pushes De Gendt down to third, setting a time three seconds faster. Dombrowski continues to look unbeatable though, with only the absolute top favourites remaining!
Bobridge goes on the current podium - 1h04'49
America are forced to put all hopes into Dombrowski, as contemplated top rider Taylor Phinney is far off the pace. Did I hear anyone say that the future time trials look star spangled? I should think so.
A rough day for Phinney - 1h05'58
Julien Vermote from Belgium can't match up against the top times either. That means De Gendt is the only potential medal candidate for the huge cycling country.
Vermote probably needs a few more years - 1h05'02
It's not going to be for Italy either. Experienced veteran Marco Pinotti can't compete with the younger generation this year, and wont trade his Italian champion's jersey for a rainbow one. Will be interesting to see if he comes back.
Seems like Pinotti's days have gone by - 1h05'40
Just when it starts to look like Dombrowski could actually bring the biggest clash victory of the century - it happens! Fresh and as motivated as it gets, Alberto Contador shoots him down from the stars - overtaking the lead by eight seconds!
Alberto is back! - 1h04'11
Provisional standings update:
Alberto Contador | 1h04'11 | Joe Dombrowski | + 8 | Jack Bobridge | + 38 | Thomas De Gendt | + 40 | Anton Vorobyev | + 50 |
A completely out of form Sylvain Chavanel is caught towards the end of the race, by the man starting third from the end - Fabian Cancellara.
But guess what? Spartacus isn't at his best today, and eventually concedes 37 seconds to Contador - not even enough to challenge Dombrowski for provisional second place! Will he even take a medal today?
A total nightmare for Cancellara - 1h04'48
Bradley Wiggins realises already at the first checkpoint that he wont be able to compete for a medal. His time eventually ends up a long way from where he would've liked to be - 44 seconds behind Contador!
No medal for Wiggo - 1h04'55
That means medal for Contador and the day's big surprise, Dombrowski!
It also leaves only one man left to prevent Contador from taking revenge from the Vuelta failure with a victory here - defending champ Tony Martin.
It's a really close one all the way from the start. At both checkpoints, the two are within three seconds of each other, with Contador having the slight edge on both occasions.
Martin doing everything to retain the title!
The Cauberg proves to be a legbreaker for Martin, however. Completely exhausted, he crosses the line. His clock stops at one hour, four minutes, and 34 seconds...
Which means that Contador takes the rainbow jersey! Martin blows up on the Cauberg, and loses as much as 25 seconds in the end. The most amazing ride of the day surely goes to Dombrowski though - the silver medallist!

Dombo
Didn't think he was this good at it, but hes kinda the same as Conta. No one thought he was great at TTing, but now he's one of the best. Atleast imo, because he's certainly decent at it.

Indeed, 15th is everything but bad. Hopefully he might be able to compete for a place among the ten best next year, with a bit of development.
Contador wasn't really much of a surprise, tbh. Obviously in great form after the Vuelta, plus much fresher than everyone else. Martin, Cancellara, Wiggins and the other top favourites have all raced a bit too much.
Dombo on the other hand...
I really don't know how it happened. His TT has improved to 76 TT, but normally that's nowhere near enough for a medal. I guess he had a (+5) daily form.
And yeah roturn - I can assure you that he can climb as well. I reckon he could very well enter the top 10 in a GT already next year. 76 MO and 70+ in STA, RES and REC already.
UCI: World Championships - Road Race
The Cauberg is, just like in the TT, the main obstacle on the parcours. Annoyingly, the game doesn't find the course very difficult - so it's set as a flat race. Therefore, we'll probably see a sprinter triumphing just after the top of the Cauberg. What's that? Unrealistic? Nah, just Cya logic...
Considering that the top of the Cauberg is just a kilometer and a half from the line, Peter Sagan must surely be the main favourite. One of the best on short climbs like this, in addition to the same capacity in the sprints.
Other similar riders are, for example; Matthew Goss, Tom Boonen, John Degenkolb, Oscar Freire and even Reinardt Janse van Rensburg. All favoured on a finish like this. They'll all suffer more than Sagan on the climb though.
We obviously can't discount the pure sprinters either. Mark Cavendish and André Greipel are obviously on their own level. I think they will struggle to cope with the Cauberg though, so I'll be surprised if they're able to compete for this.
There's also a ton of others, who could use the Cauberg as a launchpad for a late attack. Philippe Gilbert is obviously the first name the springs to mind, but also riders like Vuelta champ Joaquim Rodriguez and a vengeful Fabian Cancellara. Along with like a dozen other names.
Can't say I expect much from the French squad though. All but three of those I gave a spot in the squad decided to race elsewhere. Now I'm left with an out-of-form Nacer Bouhanni and two wildcards in Arthur Vichot and Julien Antomarchi. We'll try some late attacks, for sure.

Go Sagan!
Oh, sorry, go Bouhanni!
Great TT from Paillot, he really surprised me , same as Dombrowski, i thought he is not TT talent.
Congrats to Alberto, he was the best.

Looking forward to the Road Race! It's even harder to predict what'll happen there than the TT. Though I must say: France will be extremely happy with a top 10 place |
