UCI says that Saxo Bank may lose its World Tour license. The license commission has called a hearing with Team Saxo Bank which may withdraw the license since Contador's points are gone.
Exactly what i feared...

I doubt they will lose the license. Dont really hope so either. I think the team is just as good as 1T4I. |

That's (one of) the friggin' problem(s) of these stupid backdated bans. Now you have a team, team which wasn't AC's team when he commited the offense he's being banned for, which might lose its WT license due to this stupid ban. Not that I'd shed any tear for Riis, but it wouldn't make any sense.

That is why Contador should have accepted the ban in the first place instead of whining and spending millions on law suits.

Disagree. Everyone has the right to appeal. Then you've got two options, either you don't let the cyclist ride during the process (which is just plain nonsense with some processes being over a year long) or you put the offender a ban starting the day the sentence is made public. It's that easy.

Of course he has the right to appeal. But sport is a game, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Winning in the courtyard is cheap and in my opinion he deserves all the suffering he caused by going that route.
BTW: Do you know the case of FC Sion, a swiss football club? That would be the best example how NOT to do it.
But I guess we are in the wrong thread, so I quit now.

As for Riis' team, it's a moot point. He won't find a new sponsor for next year anyway, so it's only about whether the team will last until october.
The more interesting question is: who is Contador riding the Vuelta and Lombardia for?

Before reading the following, I didn't believe that UCI (or the License Commission) would withdraw Saxo Bank's license, but this article makes me think otherwise:
The UCI confirmed this today after CAS ruled against Contador, stating on its website that the UCI would ask the licence commission to rule on whether or not the team should retain its place in the WorldTour. “If the points obtained by Alberto Contador, representing approximately 68% of the Saxo Bank-Sungard team's total points, are disregarded, his team would no longer be considered to fulfil the sporting criterion required for the UCI WorldTour,” it stated.
UCI spokesman Enrico Carpani gave further details to VeloNation today. “Because the disqualification of Alberto Contador means that the team will lose a lot of points, the UCI will ask the licence commission to set up a new hearing,” he said, responding to questions sent after this morning’s CAS ruling.
“Our rules say that if there is a major change in the financial, sporting or ethical aspect, that the UCI can at any moment ask the licence commission to review the position of the team.
“At the time of the registration of the team last year, due to the fact that the Alberto Contador affair was already running, they were told that it would be possible for the licence commission to re-examine the situation if a decision to disqualify him would occur. The team was aware of this: they said from the beginning that the team should bear in mind that its position could be reviewed at any time.”
(...)
The team finished ninth with 696 points. Contador’s 471 represents a staggering 67.6% of Saxo Bank’s total haul. As a rough estimation, deducting these leaves just 225 points and puts the team far below eighteenth-placed Vacansoleil-DCM, which had 369.

So, apparently Uran has spent the off season on the track working on his sprinting.
In other, related, news Sky piss me off.

Would be a shame if Saxo Bank is being penalized for something, that took place on Astana.

Well, it is indirectly Saxo Bank's fault.
They took on Contador knowing what was hanging over his head. He is now banned with last years results taken off him. Therefore he could not have scored points.

Actually no, they signed him before he tested positive. Riis has repeatedly voiced frustration that he couldn't sign replacements.

Riis didn't know about the positive test before signing him..

I doubt there'd be any grounds to sue. A positive A/B-test is usually = being fired, according to the contracts. Not telling your employer about the positive test doesn't make matters better for Contador. |

Cycling teams have no value, according to the UCI points system at least, for what they have achieved. Their value is nothing but the sum of their riders-under-contract points (bar the ones just back from suspension, etc.).
So, with that system, it makes much sense to have Riis penalised for what an Astana rider did. |
